Last summer, after 16 years in America, I travelled to Moscow where I grew up. I was the first in my family to return. Mom gave me a hand-drawn map showing the location of my grandfather’s grave(坟墓). She asked me to visit it. I promised her it would be the first thing I’d do.

But it wasn’t until a day before I was leaving that I found time to visit.

By the entrance to the cemetery(公墓), a lady was selling flowers. She had only seven left. I bought them all, but it was then that I realized the map was lost and never found.

I could call my mom. It was already morning in New York.

But the problem was that I had already t old her I’d gone to the cemetery. What was I going to say? That I decided to go again but lost the map?

Then I found the office. An old woman searched the records and found two Abraham Pikarskis with no further details.

I set off to look for them, hoping that at least one would have a picture on the stone.

I found the two graves. Both said Abraham Pikarski, no pictures, nothing else.

Which grave was mine?

I put three flowers on the grave in front of me and went back to the first one. I also put three flowers there.

I stood there with the last flower. Which Abraham Pikarski should it go to? Should I just discard it so that each Abraham Pikarski got an equal number? Finally, I put the flower on the grave. If this is really my grandfath er’s, he got the most. If not, let this be a respect to the stranger.

I flew home to New York the next day. When Mom saw me, she started crying.

When people in Chinese cities go back home after school or work，they usually see guards(门卫)at the gates of their communities．It’s a gated community，which is common in China．Only people who live there can go inside freely，and only their cars can pass through the gates．But open communities have already become popular in many cities of other countries，like Paris，France，and New York City，the USA．

Now，things may change in China．On Feb 21，the government said that gated communities should be open to the public．

Open communities have no gates or walls，so people in the city can share roads，green areas and shops．“People need to talk and share．A good city needs to give people enough places to do this，”said Wang Weiqiang，an urban planning(城市规划)expert from Tongji University．Also，with more roads opening to the public，cities could have better traffic，according to Li Hongchang

from Beijing Jiaotong University．

However，not everyone likes the idea of open communities．Quite a lot of people say they have given money for the roads inside the communities，and they worry there will be safety problems when communities are open．

The Chinese government explained that opening the communities would be done step by step and more plans would come out in the future．Also，they have been testing it in some places in Chengdu，Sichuan，and so far it has been working well．

As a member of volunteers, I got up early because I was too excited to sleep. In the morning, we volunteers brought some flowers and fresh fruit. As we arrived at the Happiness Nursing Home, we sent them our best wishes too. How happy they were!

Then we cleaned the windows and swept the floor for them. After that, some of us performed activities for them, such as singing songs and dancing. Some of us read newspaper for them. Some of us chatted with them. When it was time for us volunteers to leave, they were grateful for our kindness.

From this meaningful activity, I found that we are supposed to care for the old and respect them. In our daily life, we should offer our seats to them on buses. And we should treat our own grandparents more kindly.
