The robbery happened when maths profe ssor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tire on an Italian mot orway. Another motorist, who stopped “to help”,stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.

Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire(里

拉)prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he d ecided he could not

For many years, I stuck to the idea that my suffering was because of my size.

I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.

Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies

will fix

Perhaps our worst mistake is to believe that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished

(珍爱). We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very

hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.

But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be

different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally realize its promise of everlasting

happiness, self-worth, and of course, love.

It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty

standards are different with culture. In Samoa, a woman is not considered attractive unless she weights

more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it"s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather

than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us work hard to change our body, but in vain.

We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves.

When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.

24. The passage tries to make the readers realize the importance of _____.

A. culture difference

B. attitudes toward ourselves

C. body size

D. different beauty standards

25. The word "everything" in Paragraph Two probably refers to _____.

A. all the efforts

B. the whole world

C. all the problems

D. the total truth

26. What can be inferred about the author?

A. The author was once troubled by her/ his weight.

B. The author succeeded in losing weight.

C. The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents

D. The author is a Samoan.

27. The best title for the passage probably is _____.

A.Lose all your wounds with your weight

B. Beauty: standard varies with

culture

C. Change your attitude rather than your shape

D. It will be different next time

On April 2, 2012, in the Diamond Creek subdivision of Forney, Texas, the Enochs family awoke to an ordinary day. Sherry Enochs, 52, opened the doors of her at-home day care to the two small children she would be watching that day. At around 11:30, Sherry’s daughter Lindsey, 22, kissed her 19-month-old son, Laine, left him in her mother’s care, and hurried off to her own day care job.

Quiet, strong and compassionate, Sherry had spent her life taking care of everyone. She’d raised five children of her own and was doting a grandmother. Today, in addition to Laine and the two children she was watching -- 19-month-old Abigail and three-year old Connor -- the house was home to two dogs and a couple of goldfish.

Around midday, she got a call from her daughter Megan, 26, who was five months pregnant and lived about 10km away in Hea rtland.” Look at the TV, Mum,” she said.

On-screen, news crews were showing footage from Lancaster, just 50km away, of a tornado hurling tractor-trailers around.

“Is it coming this way?” asked Sherry.

“No. It sounds like it’s going to stay west of Forney.”

Relieved, Sherry turned her attention back to the children, busying herself to such an extent that she never heard the sirens warning the residents to seek shelter. Laine was in his toddler bed watching a cartoon. Connor and Abigail were playing on the fl oor. Then Sherry’s phone rang: Megan again.

“Mum, look outside!” This time there was a note of urgency in her voice. Sherry went down the hallway to her bedroom. She looked out the window, and her heart lodged in her throat. A tornado was tearing across the open field adjacent to the subdivision. It was massive -- a great vaporous funnel(漏斗)with a sharp bend in it becoming narrow to an earthward point. Behind it the sky was black. A jagged bolt of lightning fired inside the funnel. The twister’s path was no w obvious: it was heading right into Diamond Creek.

“Is here, Megan,” Sherry yelled. “The tornado is here!”

Keeping Megan on the phone, she ran down the hall to the front room. There she lifted Laine and Abigail and hustled Connor back up the hallway and into the middle

bathroom. “Get in the tub,” she ordered the bewildered kids. The Enochs had no cellar, so the tub would be the safest place to take cover.

Sherry climbed into the bathtub and sat Abigail and Connor shoulder-to-shoulder, placing her legs over them.

28. According to the passage, which of the following can best describe Sherry?

A. Brave and dumb.

B. Passionate and reliant.

C. Caring and cool-hearted.

D. Responsible and childish.

29.Why didn’t Sherry take necessary p recautions(预防措施)when Megan called for the first time?

A. She was too busy taking care of the kids to take any measures.

B. She was told that the tornado would not sweep the area she lived.

C. She answered the phone so that she missed the warning.

D. She was confident of dealing with this common disaster properly.

30. When did Sherry notice the sign of the tornado?

A. When the family got up that morning.

B. When Lindsey left to work.

C. When Sherry turned on the television.

D. When Megan called for the second time.

31. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Megan regretted giving the false information to her mother.

B. Sherry made best use of whatever she could find to take shelte

C .Sherr y couldn’t afford the time to get into the cellar.

D. The kids realized the danger by instinct and thus became obedient.

As the morning school bell rings and students rush in,teenagers in one classroom settle onto mats and meditation (冥想)pillows. They fall silent after the teacher taps a “singing bowl”.

These students are in a for-credit,year-long mindfulness class, which is meant to ease youth anxiety and depression and to prevent violence. For 90 minutes, three days a week, they practice a mix of yoga, sitting, and walking meditation, deep breathing, journaling, and non-judgmental listening.

Yoga and meditation have gained popularity among Americans in recent decades, supported by studies showing benefits to emotional, mental, and physical health. The centuries-old practices have roots in eastern religions, but Western culture has long focused on physical postures (姿势),breathing, and relaxation techniques.

Some people have greeted the move with less than enthusiasm. Last year, an elementary school in Ohio ended its mindfulness program after parents complained it was too closely linked to religion. But many school districts are reporting success. In Richmond, California, schools have reported drops in school problems among low-income, at-risk youths. The school district in South Burlington, Vermont, introduced a successful mindfulness course as part of a health and wellness program, and now administrators there have advocated mindfulness into K-12 curriculums.

Two years ago, Caverly Morgan developed the after-school mindfulness program teamed up with Allyson Copacino, who teaches yoga. After hundreds of students signed up,Principal Brian Chatard took note. The school was dealing with a student,s suicide (自杀),and few resources were available to address student s’ emotional and mental health.

“High school is the hardest period of time for kids,” Mr. Chatard said. “You’ve got emotional changes, physical changes, and all the social pressures. It’s also the onset of mental illness for some kids, depression hits, and there,s the pressure of college and sports. All these things kids do is overwhelming without having a strategy (策略)to deal with it. ” And now schools all over the country are introducing the practices.

32. What do Western people value more about yoga and meditation?

A. Non-judgmental listening.

B. Religious meaning.

C. Journaling

D.. Physical benefits.

33. What can we infer about the mindfulness class?

A. It is supported by parents.

B. It relives pressure of students.

C. It mainly builds students up physically.

D. It improves students’ academic performance.

34. Who started the mindfulness class?

A. Administrators.

B. Brian Chatard.

C. Caverly Morgan.

D. Allyson Copacino.

35. What is Mr. Chatard’s attitude tow ards the program?

A. Concerned.

B. Supportive.

C. Doubtful.

D. Reserved.

解析:it作形式主语,真正的主语为that he had left his keys in the office。 A.unless除非,B.even if即使,C.in case以防万一,D.as long as只要。

1考查能力好载体 题目 函数()f x =x +11+a +11+8 +ax ax ,x ∈(0,+∞). There can be little doubt that 4 classes can help the gifted children to graduate earlier and take their place in life sooner. However, to take these 5 out of the regular classes may create serious problems. I observed a number of 6 children who were taken out of a special class and placed in a 7 class. In the special class, they showed little ability to use their own judgment, relying 8 on their teachers? directions. In the regular class, having no worry about keeping up, they began to reflect 9 on many problems, some of which were not on the school program. Many are concerned that gifted children become 10 and lose interest in learning. However this 11 is more often from parents and teachers than from students, and some of these 12 simply conclude that special classes should be set up for those who are 13 . Some top students do feel bored in class, but why they 14 so goes far beyond the work they have in school. Studies have shown that to be bored is to be anxious. The gifted child whop is bored is an 15 child. 1. A. principle B. theory C. arguments D. classification 2. A. designing B. grouping C. learning D. living 3.
