1、Punctuality is a necessary habit in all public affairs of a civilized society.

2、Without it, nothing could ever be brought to a conclusion; everything would be in a state of chaos.

3、Only in a sparsely-populated rural community is it possible to disregard it.

4、He is therefore forgiven, if late for a dinner party.

When..., he....

5、But people are often reproached for unpunctuality(又是一个直接表示否定意义的词) when their only fault is cutting things fine.

But people are often blamed just because they have arranged their agendas too heavy to be punctuality. ——|

6、The over-punctual can be as much a trial to others as the unpunctual.

as much a trial to others as。。

7、Although being early may mean wasting a little time, this will be less than if you miss the train and have to wait an hour or more for the next one; and avoid the frustration of arriving at the very moment when the train is drawing out of the station and being unable(又是。。) to get on it.

同时几个单词觉得蛮好:drawing out of the station 一般都会说 about to leave, take off,...

be unable to ..比couldn't, failed to, not successful。。

8、An even harder situation is to be on the platform in good time for a train and still to see it go off without you.

without..

9、She entered the station twenty minutes before the train was due, since her patents had impressed upon her that it would be unforgivable to miss it and cause the friends with whom she was going to stay to make two journeys to meet her.

10、She felt in her handbag fot the piece of paper...

She searched in her bag for the piece of paper..

11、The girl, tear streaming down her face, begged to be allowed to slip into the guard's van.

那个 tear streaming down her face 觉得这个状语用得蛮好的。。。

第59课

1、People tend to amass possessions, sometimes without being aware of doing so.

tend to。

2、Those who never have to change house become indiscriminate collectors of what can only be described a clutter.

of + what引导名词从句

3、As they grow old, people also accumulate belongings for two other reasons, lack of physical and mental energy, both of which are essential in turning out and throwing away, and sentiment.

。quite out of breath

4、…and so they gradually acquire a value beyond their true worth.

如果自己翻译怎么写? they become more precious than they used to be?

5、Some things are collected deliberately in the home in an attempt to avoid waste.

in an attempt to: 表示目的

6、Collecting, by occupying spare time so constructively, makes a person contented, with no time for boredom.

第58课

1、Her shopping had tired her and her basket had grown heavier with every step of the way home.

2、In the lift her thoughts were on lunch and a good rest…

3、She walked slowly into the hall and at once noticed that all the room doors were open, yet following her regular practice she had shut then before going out.

4、It was a clear as daylight then that burglars had forced an entry during her absence.

5、Her first impulse was to go round all the rooms looking for the thieves, but then she decided that at her age it might be more prudent to have someone with her, so she went to fetch the porter from his basement.

第57课

1、 He did not marry again and I was brought up without a woman?s care; but I lacked for nothing, for he was both father and mother to me.

lack for。。 2、 His roots and mine had become too firmly embedded in the new land.

Several ideas have become too firmly embedded in people?s mind.

3、 I hired a car the day after landing and bought a comprehensive book of maps, which

I found most helpful on the cross country journey, but which I did not think I should need on the last stage.

On the last stage:

I think it does not…

4、 It was not that I actually remembered anything at all.

5、 Fortunately for me, as I was wondering what to do next, there appeared on the horizon a man on horse back, riding in my diction.

Fortunate for me

第56课

1、 Without it we could not make a living.

Eg: creativity v.s knowledge

Without creativity we could not make a living in such a fast-developing society.

2、 We know instinctively, just as beekeepers with their bees, that misfortune might overtake us if the important events of our lives were not related to it.

Eg: We know instinctively, just as beekeeper with their bees, that a good eating habit is necessary for one to keep fit.

3、 This is a rare occurrence as our climate seldom goes to extremes.

同时 this is a rare occurrence 这个表达,比普遍的 this seldom happens。。要好

4、 Next came a horse, swimming bravely, but we were afraid that the strength of the current would prevent its landing anywhere before it became exhausted.

1、 Radio telescopes have one big advantage over conventional telescopes in that they can operate in all weather conditions and can pick up signals coming from very distant stars.

2、 The radio telescope at Iodrell Bank in England was for many years the largest in the world.

3、 A new telescope, over twice the size, was recently built at Sugar Grovein West Virginia.

4、 Astronomers no longer regard as fanciful the idea that they may one day pick up signal which have been sent by intelligent beings on other worlds.

regard as fanciful the idea that….

其实正常的应该是regard the idea that they…as fanciful.

5、 Highly advanced civilizations may have existed on other planets long before intelligent forms of life evolved on the earth.

Highly 。。

I?m waiting for your replay.。。。。。

Your reply will be highly appreciated.。。。

6、 Aware of the fact that it would be impossible to wait thousands or millions of years

to receive an answer from a distant planet, scientists engaged in Project Ozmaate concentrating their attention on stars which are relatively close.

engage in 参与

7、 A single picture would tell us more than thousands of words.

A simple operation on the computer would save us more than thousands of minutes.

8、 In an age when anything seems to be possible, it would be narrow-minded in the extreme to ridicule these attempts to find out if there is life in other parts of the universe.

In an age when anything seems to be full of innovation, it would be narrow-minded in the extreme to regard knowledge gained as superior than creativity.

度米文库汇编之新概念英语第三册重点句子及解析Lesson55 【课文】 recent developments in astronomy have made it possible to detect planets in our won milky way and in other galaxies. this is a major achievement because, in relative terms, planets are very small and old not emit light. finding planets is proving hard enough, but finding life on them will prove infinitely more difficult. the first question to answer is whether a planet can actually support life. in our won solar system, for example, venus is far too hot and mars is far too cold to support life. only the earth provides ideal conditions, and even here it has taken more than four billion years for plant and animal life to evolve. whether a planet can support life depends on the size and brightness of its star, that is its 'sun'. imagine a star up to twenty times larger, brighter, brighter and hotter than our own sun. a planet would have to be a very long way from it to be capable of supporting life. alternatively, if the star were small, the life-supporting planet would have to have a close orbit round it and also provide the perfect conditions for life forms to develop. but how would we find such a planet? at present, there is no telescope in existence that is capable of detecting the presence of life. the development of such a telescope will be one of the great astronomical projects of the twenty-first century.

1“However, this does not always happen。” Come here, quickly! There are some my own friends! Listen, this does not always happen. She is always busy! This does not always happen, but we decide to give you two extra pounds a month!

3.Pardon? I beg your pardon. I beg your pardon? Pardon me. Thanks! 即将be的适当形式移到主语之前,如: 陈述句:This is your watch. 疑问句:Is this your watch? 1.My coat and my umbrella please. Give me my coat and my umbrella, please. (Show me your) Ticket, please. (Show me your)Passport, please. 2.Here's your umbrella and your coat. Here's 是Here is的缩略形式。 Here is your umbrella and your coat. Here's… 又如Here is my ticket 这句话用正常的语序时为My ticket is here。 3.Sorry = I'm sorry。

The New Year is a time for resolutions. Mentally, at least, most of us could compile formidable lists of 'dos' and 'don'ts'. The same old favorites recur year in year out with monotonous regularity. We resolve to get up earlier each morning, eat less, find more time to play with the children, do a thousand and one jobs about the house, be nice to people we don't like, drive carefully, and take the dog for a walk every day. Past experience has taught us that certain accomplishments are beyond attainment. If we remain inveterate smokers, it is only because we have so often experienced the frustration that results from failure. Most of us fail in our efforts at self-improvement because our schemes are too ambitious and we never have time to carry them out. We also make the fundamental error of announcing our resolutions to everybody so that we look even more foolish when we slip back into our bad old ways. Aware of these pitfalls, this year I attempted to keep my resolutions to myself. I limited myself to two modest ambitions: to do physical exercise every morning and to read more of an evening. An all-night party on New Year's Eve provided me with a good excuse for not carrying out either of these new resolutions on the first day of the year, but on the second, I applied myself assiduously to the task. The daily exercises lasted only eleven minutes and I proposed to do them early in the morning before anyone had got up. The self-discipline required to drag myself out of bed eleven minutes earlier than usual was considerable.

It has never been explained why university students seem to enjoy practical jokes more than anyone else. Students specialize in a particular type of practical joke: the hoax. Inviting the fire brigade to put out a nonexistent fire is a crude form of deception which no self-respecting student would ever indulge in. Students often create amusing situations which are funny to everyone except the victims. When a student recently saw two workmen using a pneumatic drill outside his university, he immediately telephoned the police and informed them that two students dressed up as workmen were tearing up the road with a pneumatic drill. As soon as he had hung up, he went over to the workmen and told them that if a policeman ordered them to go away, they were not to take him seriously. He added that a student had dressed up as a policeman and was playing all sorts of silly jokes on people. Both the police and the workmen were grateful to the student for this piece of advance information. The student hid in an archway nearby where he could watch and hear everything that went on. Sure enough, a policeman arrived on the scene and politely asked the workmen to go away. When he received a very rude reply from one of the workmen, he threatened to remove them by force. The workmen told him to do as he pleased and the policeman telephoned for help. Shortly afterwards, four more policemen arrived and remonstrated with the workmen. As the men refused to stop working, the police attempted to seize the pneumatic drill. The workmen struggled fiercely and one of them lost

Future historians will be in a unique position when they come to record the history of our own times. They will hardly know which facts to select from the great mass of evidence that steadily accumulates. What is more they will not have to rely solely on the written word. Films, videos. CDs and CD-ROMs are just some of the bewildering amount of information they will have. They will be able, as it were, to see and hear us in action. But the historian attempting to reconstruct the distant past is always faced with a difficult task. He has to deduce what he can from the few scanty cluesavailable. Even seemingly insignificant remains can shed interesting light on the history of early man. Up to now, historians have assumed that calendars came into being with the advent of agriculture, for then man was faced with a real need to understand something about the seasons. Recent scientific evidence seems to indicate that this assumption is incorrect. Historians have long been puzzled by dots, lines and symbols which have been engraved on walls, bones, and the ivory tusk of mammoths. The nomads who made these markings lived by hunting and fishing during the last Ice Age, which began about 35,000 B.C. and ended about 10,000 B.C. By correlating markings made in various parts of the world, historians have been able to read this difficult code. They have found that it is connected with the passage of days and the phases of the moon. It is, in fact, a primitive type of

1、He did not marry again and Iwas brought up without a woman’s care;but I lacked for nothing, for he was both father and motherto me. lack for。。 2、His roots and mine had becometoo firmly embedded in the new land. 。 Several ideashave become too firmly embedded in people’s mind. 3、I hired a car the day afterlanding and bought a comprehensive book of maps, which I found most helpful on the cross country journey, but whichI did not think I should need on the last stage. I thinkit does not… 4、It was not that I actuallyremembered anything at all. 5、Fortunately for me,as I was wondering what to do next, there appeared on the horizon a man on horse back, ridingin my diction. 1、Her shopping had tired her and her basket had grownheavier with every step of the way home. 。。 2、In the lift her thoughts were on lunch and a good rest…

He laughed. The dog runs fast.里面的He, The dog。 I love you. I ate your dog.里面的you, your dog.

1、 Radio telescopes have one bigadvantage over conventional telescopes in thatthey can operate in all weather conditions and can pick up signals coming fromvery distant stars. 2、 The radio telescope at IodrellBank in Englandwas for many years the largest in the world. 3、 A new telescope, overtwice the size, was recently built at Sugar Grovein West Virginia. 4、 Astronomers no longer regard asfanciful the idea that they may one day pick up signal which have been sent byintelligent beings on other worlds. regard as fanciful the idea that…. 其实正常的应该是regard the idea that they…as fanciful.
