外贸英语一般是指在外贸商谈、业务处理、外贸函电写作等实践中所使用的专门语言。从学科的分类来看,外贸英语属于专门用途英语(English for Specific 2Purposes )中的一个成员。它具有完整、简洁、具体、正确、清晰等特点,这也是外贸翻译应当遵循的原则。这里的“完整”是力求内容完整。例如,在订货时,需要写出所需商品,何时需要,收货人和收货地点及付款方式等。“简洁”是因为外贸活动讲求的是时间和效率,因此简单明了地表达内容和适当地把握分寸非常重要。例如,We have the pleasure to acknowledge your favor of Nov.14th .该句中的部分内容可以省去,改为Thank you for your letter of Nov.14th 则要简洁许多。此外,“具体”是指商务文书应该力求具体、明确,避免含糊、空泛、抽象。如在报盘、还盘、索赔、理赔时,需要具体的事实和数据。“正确”是指内容必须以准确的语言和套语加以表达。“清晰”是指主题突出,层次分明,其内容应该明白易懂,不能含糊不。翻译外贸英语时,应当注意并且遵循其自身的这些语言特点。 从外贸英语语言本身的特点上来看,对原文的正确理解是翻译的基础,是“忠实”原文的初始体现。“忠实”必须强调再现原文所表达的语意信息,不必刻意保留原文的语言形式,“变通”就是应根据外贸英语自身的语言习惯,语法选取最贴切的对等的语言表达形式。然而这里的“变通”不是随意的,是为促进实现“忠实”标准在外贸翻译中的应用。如何有效地把“忠实”和“变通”方法应用到外贸翻译中?“忠实”和“变通”应体现在外贸翻译的用词、组句、语气、语态等诸多环节上。

一、外贸翻译中,用词方面的“忠实”和“变通”

英语名词含性、数、格等语法范畴,动词含形式、时

态、语态等,而中文动词和名词则没有这些特点,但常结合其量词、虚词、语气词来实现相同的表达效果。在

用词方面,英语多用名词、介词,中文多用动词。因此,

翻译外贸英语时,英语名词、介词与中文动词之间的“变通”是较常见的。 例1:本公司从事纺织用品出口业务,有30多年的行业经验。 译文1:Our company deals in export of textiles and has a history of over three decades in the line. 译文2:We are exporters of textiles with a history of over thirty years in this line. 针对文中的“从事”、“有”动词的表达形式,译文1中分别用了“deals in ”和“has ”两个动词,译文2则分别通过“are exporter of ”和“with ”的名词和介词词组。尽管形式上第一种翻译与原文较吻合,但它从意义上并未能忠实的表达原文的意思。原文是说明该公司的业务范围及业务经历,并不强调“经营、具有”这两个动作。从外贸英语的表达习惯来看,英文常用人称来体现人文思想。因此第二种翻译“we ”———人称指代“本公司”———“our company ”,体现了外贸英语的人文思想和简洁的特点。所以译文2的表达更佳。

二、外贸翻译中,组句方面的“忠实”和“变通”

主要是指通过语句重组和用词增减,来冲破原文的束缚,表达出原文的真实意思。所谓语句重组主要是指打破原文句法结构,按照译语的习惯,表达出原文的真实意思,从而使译文既准确又顺达。 例2:Ours terms of payment are by confirmed ,ir 2revocable L/C in our favoravailable by draft at sight ,reaching us one month ahead of time of shipment ,remai 2ning valid for negotiation in China for further 21days af 2ter the prescribed time of shipment and allowing trans 2shipment and partial shipment. 译文:我方的付款方式是通过即期的、保兑的、不

可撤消的信用证支付。该信用证须在装船前一个月送达我方;须在规定的装船时间后21天内中国仪付有效;须允许转船运输和分批装运。

原文的句子是在陈述付款条款,用了一个含多重非限定分句来做修饰语的简单句。译成中文时,如果按同样结构,如“reaching us...”译为“到达我处……”;“remaining valid...”译为“保留有效……”;“allo2 wing...”译为“允许……”中文很可能语句累赘,语义不清,因此译文把简单句分化成两个并列分句,前一个说明付款方式,后一个分别说明付款时间、地点及前提,层次清楚。同时,前一句的主语译成付款方式,既体现了主谓一致,又可以避免前后两句的语意重复。

例3:We will draw on you by documentary draft at sight,through our bank,on collection basis,without L/C. 译文:不开立信用证,我方将通过即期跟单汇票通过代收行向你方支取货款。

通过对原文的仔细分析,如果按照原句的结构进行翻译,句子就会显得不连贯。因此,在翻译时相应把句子结构进行转化,就可以有效地使句子畅达。

翻译过程中增减用词:增词不是增义;减词也不是减义。具体来说,在翻译J过程中,根据原文上下文的意思、逻辑关系,译语语言的特点和习惯,在翻译表达时,一方面可增加字面上没有的而语意包含的字词或是增补句法上省略的字词;另一方面也可以省略原文中的有句法、语气、语态和时态功能的词语及句式,从而达到准确再现其语意的效果。

例4:We shall ship Contract No.122by s.s“Presi2 dent”due to sail from our port to your port on or about May21.

译文:我方将通过“总统”号货轮装运第l22号合同项下的货物,该货轮定于5月21日前后从本港驶往贵港。

例5:We are making you this offer subject to your reply reaching here before the15th this month.

译文:以你方在本月25日前复到有效。

例4的译文表达增加了带有下划线的部分,其表达的语意与原意吻合;例5的译文表达在用词上省略了“we are making you this offer”的译法,结果译文表达语意清楚、明白、简洁、严谨。

三、外贸翻译中,语气再现的“忠实”与“变通” 中英文语气表达的形式不同,在互译时有必要作形式上的“变通”,以便实现对原文语气的“忠实”。

例6:Enclosed please find out one set of the ship2 ping documents covering this consignment.

译文:随函附上一整套有关此批货物的货运单据,敬请查收。

句中“please do...”结构的祈使句,语言简洁明快,又不失礼貌客气。句中的“sed”用作宾补,置于句首,有强调宾语的含义。译文则使用了中文习惯的“敬请……”结构的祈使句,简洁严谨。

例7:We’d be greatly appreciated if you would send us your latest catalog.

译文1:诚请贵公司给我方寄来你方最新目录。

译文2:贵公司如能给我方寄来你方的最新目录,我方不胜感激。

原句中“should...if...would”结构的虚拟语气,谦虚地表达了主语的真诚意愿,含蓄、得体。译文2没有进行语气变通,虽然形式上与原文较对应,但语句烦琐,语意重点不突出,未能有效地再现原文请求的语气。译文1运用了语气的变通,以中文的祈使句结构“诚请……”表达了主语的真诚请求,语言简洁、严谨,较好地再现原文的语意和语气效果。

四、外贸翻译中,语态再现过程

的“忠实”与“变通”

尽管英汉两种语言都有主动和被动语态,但由于两种语言表达习惯不同,强调的对象(主体)不同,英汉互译时语态的“变通”也是必要的。

例8:Shipment will be made within seven days after receipt of the relevant L/C.

译文1、收到相关信用证七天内,我方将安排装运。 译文2、收到相关信用证七天内,装船将被实施。

译文2形式上与原文很对应,但语气表达生硬,主语与状语前后不呼应。译文1作了语态的转换,既贴切又符合中文表达习惯。

五、结语

在外贸翻译实践中,译者即使能充分考虑、运用以上讨论的技巧,也不能解决外贸翻译中的所有问题。既然外贸英语属于ESP,那么外贸英语翻译和普通英语的翻译就有很大的区别。外贸英语翻译复杂得多。因为译者除了要精通两种语言文化以及翻译技巧外,还必须熟悉外贸方面的知识。比如说一个译者要把一份合同或协议真正地翻译清楚,他就必须不仅掌握、摸透合同协议本身的专业知识,还要把相关的专业知识,如运输学、保险学、外贸实务的一些基本过程掌握好。因此,要搞好有关外贸内容的翻译,这就要求译者不仅应具有相应的专业知识而且要求了解外贸领域的语特点和表达法。同时译者还需要充分掌握外贸中的专业术语(technical terms)和行话(jargons)。这样才能够在外贸翻译过程中,把对原文的理解和译文的表达与外贸工作的实际紧密联系起来,充分利用中英文的语言特点和规律,真正达到外贸翻译的“忠实”和“变通”的良好效果。
