given below in Chinese:

1、人们常说“不要放弃”,这句话的意义何在?

2、具体论述你对这句话的理解。

参考范文:

Never Give Up

“Never give up” is often said by people when they are frustrated or in depression. This phrase means determination and encouragement. In my opinion, the determination to succeed is of great importance. Therefore, I believe that we should

never give up.

If we give up too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel discouraged by our failures; instead we should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow as we should.

Another reason that we should never give up is because we can learn from our mistakes only if we make a new effort. If we do not try again, the lesson we have

learned is of no use.

Finally, as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of life. If we never challenge ourselves,

we will begin to doubt our abilities.

In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us do better in our future work. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of attaining our goals; but if we keep trying, there is always a chance that we

will succeed one day.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Fast Food. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given

Fast Food

In present-day China, fast food is so popular, especially among children and teenagers, that it can be seen in every big and medium-sized city. It's even difficult to think of any other single thing that represents the fast pace of modern society in the way that fast food does. Some people think it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. The trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal—saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. In their opinions, its popularity is also attributed to the restaurants' clean and cozy environment, excellent service, and

guaranteed quality of food and drinks.

However, others maintain that fast food is usually low in nutrition and can't be regarded as a balanced diet. For example, doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible. Besides, although cooking at home is time-consuming and the following washing-up tiresome, it offers healthy and

delicious meals your body needs and likes.

As far as I'm concerned, fast food is not my best choice. For one thing, I prefer traditional spicy Chinese food. For another, being engaged in the work all day, I may spend one or two hours to prepare my favorite dishes to ensure myself a nice rest. As a result, fast food is only a good choice when I am in a hurry and resort to it once in a

while.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Changes in Chinese People's Diet. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given below:

1、根据上表,描述人们饮食结构的变化;

2、请说明发生这些变化的原因;

3、得出结论。

参考范文:

Changes in Chinese People's Diet

From 1999 to 2003, great changes had taken place in Chinese people's diet. As is revealed in the table, during the five years, the consumption of grain decreased by 9%, while that of meat and milk increased by 6% and 4% respectively. From the figures we can draw the conclusion that grain, as the staple food in China, is playing a less important role in people's diet, while the consumption of high-energy food, such

as meat and milk, has increased steadily.

What has caused these changes? From my point of view, there are two main reasons. On the one hand, people now have more money to buy high-energy food. On the other hand, people now pay more attention to the quality of their diet. They are seeking for the most reasonable diet structure that will do good to their health.

As a result, we can see that people's living standard has greatly improved in the five years. We can also expect better living standard and more reasonable diet

structure in the future.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the table and the outline given

below:

1、根据上表,简要描述1980年与1999年我国农业、工业和服务业从业

人员所占比例的情况及其变化;

2、请说明发生这些变化的原因;

3、得出结论。

参考范文:

The Changes of the Percentages of Chinese Professions

It can be seen from the chart that the great changes have occurred in the professional pattern in China between 1980 and 1999 with a great increase in the people involved either in manufacturing or service and a corresponding shrinking in agricultural population. Especially, in 1999, 38% of the Chinese working in the agricultural industry, decreased nearly half to that of 1980 while the number of people engaged in service industry quadrupled that of 1980. Why are there such great

changes during 20 years?

In my opinion, three possible reasons contribute to it. First of all, with the development of primitive economy, more people will move over into manufacturing and the service industries. Secondly, China's open-door and economic reform policies realize more efficient and effective farming and increased urbanization. For example, with the development of what is called the village and township enterprises, a great number of farmers are now working in various small business without living their homes, which accounts mainly for the increase in manufacturing population. Finally, the economic policies result in an immense improvement in the Chinese people's living standard, which creates a great huge demand for service and thus enable the service industries to flourish and absorbs more and more people into these fields.

As far as the effect is concerned, the changes of the percentages of Chinese professions will have far-reaching significance. On the one hand, these changes

signify the great achievements China has made since she launched the economic reform and opened her door to the world. On the other hand, they also mark a great leap forward on her way towards an economic power in the world. In a word, both the nation's development and her people's living standard will get more and more benefit

from these changes.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Keeping Customs. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese)below:

1、当移居国外时,有人喜欢入乡随俗。

2、有人喜欢坚持故乡风俗习惯。

3、你的看法。

参考范文:

Keeping Customs

When people move to another country, they not only face a different environment and language, but also different customs. Some people choose to follow the customs of their adopted country, they may find that it helps them to adapt more quickly to the new society. They have something to discuss and share with their new neighbors, and sharing customs is one way for people to feel closer to one another. Thus, following the new customs may help immigrants feel more at home. It may also help them to see the positive things in their new environment and do forget their

feelings of homesickness.

On the other hand, some people choose to continue following their own customs may also find that it helps them feel more at home. There are many things to adjust to in another country, and following their traditional customs may help people feel more secure in the new surroundings. More importantly, our customs are a part of us. They are an expression of the culture that has shaped us. This is something that most of us would like to pass down to our children and share with others.

To sum up, our customs have value and are an important part of our culture. Therefore, I don't believe that we should abandon our traditional customs when we move to another country. At the same time, I believe that we should learn about the customs of our new home and follow those that appeal to us. In this way, we can remember and celebrate our old culture while adapting to our new one.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Save the Forests. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

1、森林是最重要的自然资源。

Save the Forests

These days we often talk about the importance of our natural resources. In many countries they are disappearing at a rapid rate and environmentalists are urging people everywhere to protect their air, water, forests, wildlife, and so on. It is difficult to choose just one natural resource to save, but in my opinion, saving the forests should

be the top priority.

First of all, forests help to preserve other natural resources such as water, air, and animals. Without forests, the land cannot hold water as well. This means that in a heavy rain hillsides will collapse, causing great damage. Not only that, but without the protection of trees, the nutrient-rich topsoil will be washed away and nothing will be able to grow on the land. Trees also help to clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. And, of course, forests are the natural habitat of many wild animals. Without them, these animals will not be able to survive. Another reason to preserve our forests is that large numbers of trees can help to mitigate the greenhouse effect by absorbing solar radiation. And finally, forests are a place where people can get close to nature, and if they learn to love nature, they will want to preserve all the

earth’s natura l resources.

All of the earth’s natural resources are important, and we should all work to save them. The reason that I choose the forests as most important is because they help us in so many ways. By saving the forests, I believe we can save the planet.

She found that mothers who used devices during the exercise stared 20 percent fewer verbal and 39 percent fewer bnonverbal interaction with their children. During a separate observation she saw that phones became a source of tension in the family. Parents would be looking at their emails while the children would be making excited bids for their attention. Infants are wired to look at parents faces try to understand their world, and if those faces are blank and unresponsive-as they often are when absorbed in a device-it can be extremely disconcerting for the children. Padesky cites the “still face experiment” devised by developmental psychologist. Ed tronick in the 1970s. in it, a mother is asked to interact with her child in a normal way before putting on a blank expression and not giving them any visual social feedback: the child becomes increasingly distressed as she tries to capture her mother’s attention. “parents don’t have to be exquisitely present at all times, but there needs to be a balance and parents need to be responsive and sensitive to be a child’s verbal or nonverbal expressions of an emotional need,” says radesky.
