Building the pyramids

Because the pyramids were huge, it took a lot of time and work to build them. Many engineers, architects, masons and artists were employed over many years to build each one.

Thousands of labourers also worked on the pyramids each year.

The labourers were mostly local farmers who gave up a few months of their time each year to help out.

The First Step

The first step in building a pyramid was to pick a site. Then architects and engineers worked together to design the pyramid and make sure that it would be strong and safe.

Not all pyramids were the same. Some were taller than the others. Some had different angles because their bases were larger than others.

All of them were constructed differently inside, too. Many were made up of stone only, while some were filled with a mix of stone, mud bricks, and even sand.

Cutting the Stone

Building work began when the pyramid was designed. There was a lot of stone in Egypt, and builders of pyramids often found supplies of stone nearby that they could use.

The Egyptians had no machinery or iron tools.

Stone masons had to dig the stone from the ground and then cut it into large blocks using only copper and stone hand tools.

Do you know what to do during a big earthquake? Scientists have some advice for us.

If the ground begins shaking while you are driving, stop your car on the roadside and stay in it. If you are in a tall building, don’t use the life and never jump out of the window. When you are in a living room, find a strong table or rush into a smaller room like the washroom, and then lie down your body. Take care of your head when you are in a public place, like a supermarket of a cinema. Don’t run about, or you may fall over and get hurt. Cross your arms to protect yourself. You can also find a place to hide.

After the main shake, quickly run out of the dangerous building, for there will be small earthquakes. If you are safe, remember not to engage the phone line, and keep it free for rescue(救
