A Koala Isn’t a Bear

Koalas remind people of teddy bears. They have thick fur and large ears. Their broad, flat nose makes them look cute, similar to teddy bears. In fact koalas aren’t cute. They have sharp teeth and very sharp claws! Koalas are marsupials. This means the mother carries her baby in a pocket while it develops, similar to a kangaroo. The baby koala lives in its mother’s pocket for the first six months of its life.

The name “koala” comes from a native Australian word that means “no drink.” The koalas get almost all their water from the eucalyptus(桉树) leaves they eat. That’s where they get their food too. Koalas eat only eucalyptus leaves, and

only the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees. The eucalyptus trees are where the koalas live. It’s also where they sleep. Koalas sleep about nineteen hours a day!

Why do they sleep so much? Some people think it’s because they’re lazy. But koalas aren’t lazy. They sleep so much because there isn’t much nutrition in eucalyptus leaves. Koalas store hardly any fat, so they must save their energy. One way to do this is to move slowly and sleep a lot.

After a day of sleeping they like to move around and eat just after sunset. They live alone most of the time. Koalas are very protective of their trees. If a koala sees another koala eating in its favorite tree, it might tell the other koala to leave by “barking” at it. Koalas do “talk” to each other. Besides barks, the males make a deep grunting sound. The mothers and babies talk in soft clicking sounds. If they get scared they may scream like a baby.

An Outstanding Teacher

Ben put the white envelope into the mailbox. He felt proud, excited, and happy—and also a little nervous about whether his essay would win.

Ben’s local newspaper had advertised a contest inviting students to submit essays in honor of a remarkable teacher. The newspaper would choose the five best essays and print them in the paper. As soon as Ben heard about the contest, he knew he wanted to write about Mrs. Gruen.

Mrs. Gruen was always so friendly and patient, and she always had something encouraging to say to her students. Even more importantly, she knew how to make science interesting and enjoyable. Before being in her class, Ben would have said he was uninterested in science, but now science was his favorite subject.

At first, Ben had struggled with his essay. After he finished his first draft, he asked his older sister, Hannah, to review it. Eventually, after many more revisions, the essay was ready to mail. As Ben stood before the mailbox, he imagined how surprised Mrs. Gruen would be to open the newspaper and see her name in print.

When the big day finally came, Ben opened the newspaper and eagerly studied the columns of print for the essay he had written. He did not see his essay anywhere. He turned through all of the pages, but it was not there! Instead, he saw five other essays talking about five other teachers. Ben felt like a balloon that had suddenly lost all its air.

A few days later in science class, Mrs. Gruen asked Ben to stay after class for a few minutes. “Your sister stopped by yesterday,” Mrs. Gruen told Ben. “She brought me the most wonderful gift.” Ben saw that Mrs. Gruen was holding a copy of his essay. “You have no idea how much it means to me that you enjoy my class and think I’m a good teacher. No reward or honor could ever be greater than this essay,” said Mrs. Gruen.

“OK,” Ben said, “I meant everything I wrote.” Then he stepped into the hallway with his head held high.

Can a Language Become Extinct?

A language can become extinct when the last person who can speak it passes away. Or more likely when the second-last person who speaks it dies because then there is no one left to talk to. According to linguists (语言学家) there is nothing unusual about a single language dying out. But what is happening today is quite remarkable. According to the

recent statistics, there are approximately 6,000 languages in the world as we speak. Of these, about half are going to die out in the next century.

There are several reasons as to why a language can eventually die out. These range from natural disasters, such as hurricanes, to sociological factors, like cultural assimilation, in which the culture of a minority group is gradually replaced by a stronger one. The former can cause tribes to leave their natural habitat(栖息地) and therefore become fewer and fewer in number. However, it doesn’t happen very frequently. In fact, the latter is a much bigger threat and it is responsible for the extinction of a lot of languages in countries like the USA and Australia. For instance, Chemehuevi is one of the languages which is really close to dying out since its sole speaker is an old, yet healthy, man named Johnny Hill, Jr.

It is very important for as many languages as possible to be preserved. Scientists have been trying to raise people’s awarenes s on how certain tribes have specific words which cannot be expressed in let’s say English simply because there is no equal meaning. Namely, the Yupik of Alaska have 99 names to describe different layers of ice formation, or how the Tofa of Siberia classify reindeer (驯鹿). In other words, when languages die out, mankind’s wisdom reduces.

On a happier note, there are many famous cases which show what can be done to preserve languages in danger of extinction. In particular, the Maori in New Zealand have created so-called “language nests”: organizations which help children under five learn the language. They provide them with a setting where they are exposed to the language intensively so that they get to realise that communicating in Maori is as natural as communicating in English. There is always, of course, the risk that the children won’t keep the language alive after they have left their “nests”. Nevertheless, hope dies hard.
