The reasons for shyness and the ways to overcome it

A: Well, many people are shy. If you are a shy person, don’t worry, we will discuss the reasons for shyness and the ways to overcome it.

B: Some people are shy because they seldom take part in social activities, they prefer to stay at alone, thus are not wiling to communicate with others. Other people are s hy because they are not confident in themselves.

C: I agree with you. They regard themselves as short, shy, ugly, fat, or dull; therefore, they are afraid of being laughed at and dare not bravely express their opinions. D: Yes, and what’s more, still others are shy because of certain experience of failure i n life, they can not overcome the sense of failure therefore dare not do the things in their own ways.

B: OK, we have talked about the reasons for shyness. And how about the ways to overcome it? As far as I’m concerned, for many people, the key to overcome shyness is to build up self-confidence.

A: Let me give you some advice. Remember that everyone has weaknesses and every one experiences some failures, therefore, we should recognize our strengths and try our best to overcome shyness. For those who prefer to stay alone and dare not communicate with others, encourage yourself to take part in more social activities a nd try to make one or two friends each time.

D: Em, I also think the most effective ways are not making negative comments about yourself and remembering that everyone experiences some failures and disappointments, because they are the keys to achieve success.

C: First, you should believe in yourself. You have the ability to solve the problem and then try your best to do it.

D: And if you fail, regard it as learning experience and stepping-stone to success, do not blame too much on yourself, because many factors may lead to the failure, it’s n ot your own fault and does not show your incompetence.

C: I fully agree with you, your advice is acceptable and helpful. One more thing, there are great difference between modesty and shyness. Modesty is a good virtue that is cherished by many people.

B: While shyness is an uncomfortable or even destructive feeling one has in company of others. Shy people are always lack of self-confidence. They are reluctant to communicate with strangers or dare nor express their opinions bravely. Therefore, modesty is a good personality while shyness is not desirable in many cases.

C: Because she is quit shy. And she is afraid of talking with others. It seems that she i s likely to be alone, so she has no friends here.

A: I think family background maybe the most important factor that shaping one’s personality. If one’s family is poor, maybe the children of that family will feel inferior , they don’t want to talk or play with other people, especially the rich people. Or if o ne family is rich, their children can also have strange temper, because their parents will be very strict with them. The children may feel more pressure.

B: But one’s personalities can also change just with time goes.

C: I can’t more agree with you. In Addition, the degree of education has a great influence on person’s personality. For instance, there are many differences between illiterate and learned people. Such as the way they deal with the same problem. D: A comment saying is that our parents are our first teachers. Their behavior and thoughts affect our personality. If your parents are optimists, that will sharp you to b e optimistic. Even when you face a great setback, you will answer it with smile. Sometimes, you may behave like your father or your mother, because you are their friends.

B: I love the famous myth “the journey to the west”. It’s based on the well-known same-title novel. It’s a wonderful myth with numbers of brave figures. We can learn much from it. For example, try to be brave when facing difficulties and be faith in the people who is really important for you, just like the monkey Sun.

C: I like zhubajie very much, because he is very kind and amicable, and he is very brave and cute. He can compete against the man who is stronger than him. Although sometimes he is very greedy, I still like him very much.

D: Yes! I think so. What’s more, the monkey king is an excellent character. He is a hero in Journey to the West. And do you have any others to share with us

A: My favorite legend is little neza, I know him when I was still very young, he has been put on TV early brave, clever and powerful, he dare to struggle with treacherous court official and had defeat them. He was our little hero and he always encouraged us don’t fear strengthen and to face the difficulty in our life bravely.

B: The two figures are both attractive. But maybe “the journey to the west” is more excellent. It told that how the monkey Sun helps his shifu pass all the difficulties. C: yes, in my opinion, I also like the mother of neza, because she is very patient. Neza is very naughty, but through his mother’s education, he finally becoming a succeed man.

D: Perfect! I know NeZa is actually a brave child. I like him as well. As we all know, this typical characters come from the myth. And the myth is full of ancient people’s dreams. They want to fly like a bird, so the monkey king can change into a bird. They want to swim freely in water, so NeZa can change into a fish. At last, I have to say myth really communicates to us a lot of happiness.

4. Do you admire Tortoise for his cleverness or do you sympathize with all the birds , why?

A: I don’t admire Tortoise’s cleverness. He was unwise to cheat all the birds. After his mischief,

how could he have face to live together with them any longer? He could have no frie nds at all.

B: Yes. He was clever, but at the same time he was also stupid. When all the birds be came so

angry, how could he have trusted Parrot to take his massage to his wife? He should h ave jumped

into the sea to avoid being hurt.

C: I admire Tortoise’s Tortoise’s cleverness. He was a guy who knew where to look fo r a nice

dinner during a time of famine. He knew very well how to get trust from others. D: Tortoise was also quick-

minded. He had all the skills to cheat the birds and the sky people. His only mistake was that he should not so greedy as not to leave any nice food for the birds.

A: No, We should not learn from Tortoise. If we cheat others, we will be punished in the end. So I sympathize with the birds. They took Tortoise with them to the sky out of kindness, but after

flying such a long distance, they had to fly back home with an empty stomach.

B: Yes. The birds were formally invited, but the food was enjoyed only by Tortoise, w ho hadn’t

been invited. The distinguished guests suffered from hunger while the casual visitor had a good

time. The birds were unlucky.

C: The birds were stupid. They knew very well that Tortoise couldn’t be trusted as he was always mischievous, and he could never change his personality and behave hims elf well. But they

persuaded themselves that he was a changed man.

D: I agree. At the party they should have let the sky people know Tortoise was not th eir king and

they had the right to have some of the nice food. A leopard can’t change its spots. T ortoise was

cunning, the birds should have known this.

In order to live well in the future, we should improve our English spoken. Do you think learners should aim to speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation?

B: That's a difficult question to answer. Though we have learned it for many years, it is only a second langua ge .And we don’t have environment to learn it .It is so hard that we can speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation.

C: Right, in my opinion. there is no point to speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation. Maybe we spend a lot of time improving your pronunciation ,but we find the gain is so small.

D: I agree, but I think it is important to aim to speak English for native-speaker pronunciation. First of all, I think perfection is always a good goal in any aspect of language learning. We should aim for perfect grammar, so why not perfect pronunciation?

A: Your question is so good. The purpose of learning a language is to communicate with native-speakers or people from other parts of the world. The better our pronunciation is more easily they will be able to understand us. And I want people to understand me without any difficulty.

B: Yes, language is a tool. Good pronunciation can help us. To be honest ,it’s only a very few who have such a good ear that they produce more or less genuine. Brithish English, and in UK people from different places also have difference. so which one should we choose to imitate.

If my pronunciation is like a native-speaker's, I will blend into the community more naturally. I'll feel pleased if I am taken for a native-speaker. Even if I can't speak so well, I don't like to spoil the language by terrible pronunciation.

A:I know you want to do it perfectly. Different accents can help us to judge people we meet, and different accents make a language become more interesting. English is not only pronunciation.

B: The most important thing is how well we organize what we want to express. Our ideas should be clear and easy to understand. To do so, we should be able to use

right words and correct grammar and conform to English culture. So we should know both English language and English culture to make us understood.

D: Ok, I will take your opinions into consideration. Thank you!

A: Do you like animals?

B、C、D: Yes, we do.

A: What is your favorite animal?

B: My favorite animal is dog. I think dogs are friendly and kind. They can help us do lots of things. Such as guard our house, help the policeman and the blind, guard(看守) the sheep and save people and so on.

C: I really agree with you. I have a pet dog named Lucky. It has white and soft furs with two small ears and a long tail. It is given by my aunt as my birthday gift. It is so friendly and lovely that we all love it very much. It likes playing balls outside so I often take it out for a walk. It also likes to be clean so I wash it and make it clean twice every week. I often feed it with dog food and sausages(腊肠). It likes one of my best friends.

D: You are lucky to have this kind of pet. It is a lot of work to keep a pet, isn't it?

C: Yes, that's true. I walk my pet dog at least twice a day. I feed her, spend time with it and watch it when it is out of its doghouse. Sometimes when I brush it, I end up with hair all over me. But I think it is all worth it. It gives its love to me in return.

D:I don’t think so. Competi tion is necessary, but aggression is not. Competition is not equal to aggression.

B:Em…But don’t you th ink there is the reality that human beings have been more aggressive than animals when the environment began to take a bad turn?

C:I’m afraid not. Human beings are thoughtful, they can find ways to improve this challenging situation to make our world more harmonious.

A: I love traveling. Almost every holiday I made a trip with my family. I really enjoyed the scenery during the trips, which made me feel relaxed. What’s more, the nature could always bring me a good mood.

B: I had some experiences of travel. However, the most impressive trip I’ve made was the one I went to Zhoushan Islands. Owing to some unhappy things that happened to me several months ago, I needed to take a walk to have some fresh air and to forget the past. I know there is nothing like nature that can make me feel comfortable, I like beautiful things such as blue sky, boundless sea, wonderful breeze, soft beach and so on…

C: So have you relaxed yourself successfully there?

B: The trip was so wonderful that I would never forget. I spent most of time visiting the tourist attractions. Although the weather there was not fine, furthermore, I suffered from rain, we still enjoyed our travel, because wherever I went, the beautiful views all around me were fantastic.

D: Em… I do believe it is a wonderful trip. For me, I will never forget the days I spent in Dalian.

A:I desire to go to Dalian. Please share it with us.

D: I paid a visit to Dalian last summer vacation with my family. It is a quite beautiful city. We played at the seaside. The sea there is deep blue and the sky is so clean. On the beach we stepped on the blocks of stones and pebbles, looked at large numbers of waves rushing up to us one after another. The breaking waves hit on the rocks and left the beach covered with foam. We felt cool and were wet all over. And the next day we took a bus to a golf court, which was the first time that I had seen how golf was played. There I have learnt how to hold the bat and hit the ball.

A:That is really a trip worth remembering. What about you, C, do you have some interesting experiences?

C: Yes. There are many trips in my memory. Among them, I never forgot that day when my family made a trip to visit Mount Huang in May. On the half way through the mountain I saw a sea of green trees. The trees were standing straight pointing upright to the sky. White clouds floated in the blue air. The bus zigzagged to the station. As we all know, the Mount Huang is the most difficult mountain to climb. And only the brave few took the path. Following the guide I began climbing on all fours. It was a test of physique as well as courage. The narrow steps in the

mountain led us higher and higher to the summit. At last we got to the summit. Standing above and looking down everything was in sight beneath me. It was magnificent and enlightening.

ABD: Oh, it is amazing that you got the summit successfully by yourself. Yeah, you are so brave.

新编大学英语3 第三单元课后练习答案 第三版

Unit 3 Social Problems In-class Reading Passage 课内阅读练习答案 Part One Preparation 1. Describing the Pictures Picture A:A couple is dining at a restaurant. Both of them are smoking. But they call and complain to the waiter, saying that those sitting at the other tables are coughing too much and that bothers them. However, they have not realized that actually it is their smoking that has caused those people to cough. I have seen many people who behave like this couple. They never take other people’s interest into consideration. They are selfish and always ready to find fault with others. They never see their own wrong doings but always make a false counter-charge. They are despised by most other people. Picture B: In this picture I see a strange beggar. While most beggars beg for food or drinks, this guy begs for money in order to buy wines. He wants to try all the 596,704 wines existing in this world. He said he already tasted 38,279 wines out of that number. Suppose he tries one kind of wine one day, it would have taken him more than 100 years to come so far. He is really an ambitious man. However, if he has the ambition to try all the existing wines, he should work hard and make money himself instead of begging for other people’s money to enjoy what life can offer. There are some people like this beggar these days. They want to enjoy life, but not based on their own hard work or effort. They want a free lunch and many of them live on borrowed money. I don’t think this is a good attitude towards life. Everyone should work hard to make a good living. Picture C: I see a court with a judge, a defendant and probably a lawyer in the picture. What is strange about this picture is that I find a tip pot, which is usually placed in a restaurant for waiters or waitress. They get tips for their excellent services to their customers. Waiters or waitresses who get generous tips will provide even better service to customers. However, a court is a place for people to seek justice and fairness. It punishes the guilty and releases the innocent. If judges start to take tips, I doubt that there will be any more justice. People will no longer be treated equally and truth will not be valued. Judgment will not be made based on facts, but on how big the tip is. What an evil place! Picture D: In this picture I see two men behind bars. One is telling his fellow prisoner that he did not commit the crimes that he had been accused of committing. His mistake was that he stole the identity of a guy who had committed those crimes. The police took him for that guy and put him in jail. They actually got the wrong person. And he was innocent. Was he really innocent? I don’t think so. He was a thief, and he was not innocent at all. However, he received a heavier punishment than he deserved. So that was an irony. The guy stole another person’s identity and in a sense he inherited his crimes as well. So never take other people’s stuff, whatever it is. No one can escape
