Not a Small Problem

Mr. Ethan was a very large man. He had a loud voice and a bad temper. He was not giant(巨人,大力士), but he was much bigger than most men.

Life was not easy for Mr. Ethan. He could seldom find clothes big enough. His feet were too large for most shoes. In fact, wherever he went and whatever he did, Mr. Ethan had problems because of his size. These problems were so bad that Mr. Ethan stayed at home most of the time. Life was easier at home.

Then one day, a friend said, “you spend too much time at home. Y ou should go out more. There ’s a good movie at the theater. ”

“I can’t sit in theater seats, ” Mr. Ethan said. “I’m too big. ”

“That is no problem,”his friend said, “I’ll buy you two tickets. Y ou can get them at the theater when you go. ”

The friend sent money to the theater for two tickets. When the day came, Mr. Ethan put on his best clothes an went to the theater.

“Oh, yes, Mr Ethan, ” the woman said. “Here you are, seats G4 and P12. I’m sorry, you and your friend can’t sit together because we are very full this evening.”

Poor Mr. Ethan. He smiled sadly, walked out of the theater and went home.

What a Nightmare

Sometimes when a day starts off badly, it just keeps getting worse and wores as each hour passes. On days like this there is nothing to do but relax and know the next day will be better.

Stone had a terrible day. His clock didn’t work and he got up late. He missed the train to work . Moreover, he had to wait a long time for the next train. As a matter of fact, he waited for more than two hours. To make matters worse, he left his briefcase on the train. As a result, he had to go to the police station. Poor Stone never got to work that day. What a nightmare!

Try describing your own idea of a “nightmare ”day. It shouldn’t be hard. Everyone has days when they just seen to get up on the wrong side of be d!

Whether Students should Take Physical Exercise Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about whether students

of Senior 3 should take physical exercise. 55% of the students think they should take exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing ping-pong and basketball, but it shouldn’t take up too much time. Proper exercise can build up one’s

body and reduce diseases. What’s more, sports let their brains have a rest so that they can study effectively.

On the other hand, 45% believe taking exercise is a waste of time and it is tiring. After having sports, they are much too excited for a long time to pay attention to their lessons. It’s also possible get hurt in sports.

Y ours sincerely,

Mobile Phones at school

Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about whether it is necessary for middle school students to carry mobile phones to school.

The majority of the students think that it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have a mobile phone. And what’s more, it’s the latest fashion.

However, most teachers think middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It is a waste of time for students to play games and send messages to each other by mobile phone. And it’s easy to cause the students to vie with each other. If necessary, they can make phone calls by using public phones on the campus.

In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as middle school students, we should put all our heart into our studies.

Y ours truly,

Li Hua

Advertisements in Our Life

We live in a world of advertisements. We see and hear them everywhere. No one can avoid being influenced by advertisements. Radio, television and computers have made it possible for advertisements to attract the attention of millions of people. Therefore, it has become an important part of our daily life.

On one hand, advertising greatly promotes sales,on the other hand, in their efforts to tell people about products and events, advertisements provide us with a large amount of the latest information. Treasure Y our Opportunities

The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Y et without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain(支撑)them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.

Opportunity is the same way. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take we take it for granted. Y et opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to “get in”on a “ground floor opportunity”, as if the opportunity will do all the work. That’s impossible.

Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. Y ou must make use of that opportunity. That’s not up to the opportunity. That’s up to you. It doesn’t matter what “floor” the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.

American Concept of Love

The American concept of love and romance begins with dating. Y oung people date in several ways. At first they might have group dates with several boys and girls together. Later, they start going on single dates- just one boy and one girl. Sometimes a boy and a girl will go to a movie.Maybe they will go to a party at a friend’s house. Or they might go out to eat.

When two couples go out together, we call it double dating. A friend might even arrange a blind date for you with someone you don’t know. That doesn’t mean you keep your eyes closed the whole evening! Y ou just don’t know who your partner will be until the time for the date. If someone asks you for any kind of date, and you don’t want to go, you may politely say, “No, thanks.”

The City of Music

Music really does mean a lot to people. There were recently over thirty thousand people in the Forbidden City to watched this historical concert from almost forty countries.

Listening to music is the favorite pastime of many people all over the world. This is especially true for the people living in Vienna, the city of music. Being the home of waltz.

Music fills the air in Vienna. Going to public concerts is often free of charge. And don’t forget, Vienna is also home to the world famous Vienna Boy’s Choir. No wonder people say Austria is always alive with a sound of music.

Rural Education

Now in the rural areas, there are many children out of school. I think one of the reasons is that their families are too poor to afford their schooling. As a result, they have to stay at home to earn money to support their families. Another reason is that many parents think it’s useless for the girls to study and they would not like them to go to school. The third reason is that some children are not interested in their lessons, and would not like to go to school.

In my opinion, all children including girls should have the chance to receive an education. People should pay more attention to the education of children because they will play a very important part in the future of our country.

Advertisements in Our Life

Bill Gates: Education Does Count

When you are feeling unhappy or forget how great you are, these are six ways to make you feel good about yourself.

Look in the mirror and say to yourself, “I am a special person and there’s no one in the world like me. I can do anything! ” It may not sound so good, but it really works!

The Torch Has Been Passed to a New

Generation of Americans

By John F. Kennedy And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子)or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very well B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above 2. The writer was surprised because ____. A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse C. the artist made his own rule D. the artist did not follow other people’s rule 3. Education is not a bystanders sport. Numerous researchers have shown that when students participate in classroom discussion they hold more positive attitudes toward school, and that positive attitudes promote learning. It is no coincidence that girls are more passive in the classroom discussion and score lower than boys on SATs. We found that at all grade levels in all communities and in all subject areas boys controlled classroom communication. They participated in more interactions than girls did, and their participation became greater as the year went on. Our research contradicted the traditional assumption that girls control classroom communication in reading while boys in math. We found that whether the subject was language arts and English or math and science, boys got more than their fair share of teacher attention. That teachers talk more to male students is simply because boys are more aggressive in grabbing their attention by calling out answers to the teachers' questions first. While girls sit patiently with their hands raised or keep silent. Psychologist Lisa Serbin and K.Daniel O'Leary, then at the state university of New York at stony brook studied classroom interaction at preschool level and found that teachers gave boys more attention, praised them more often and were at least twice as likely to have extended conversations with them. Years of experience have shown that the best way to learn something is to do it yourself. It is also important to give students specific and direct feedback about the quality of their work and answers. Teachers behave differently depending on whether boys or girls are active to provide answers during discussions. During classroom discussion, teachers in our study reacted to boys answers with powerful, precise and effective responses, while they often gave girls mild and unclear reactions because of their silence. Too often, girls remain in the dark about the quality of their answers. Active students receiving precise feedback are more likely to achieve academically. And they are more likely to be boys. This kind of communication game is played at work, as well as at school. As reported in numerous studies, it goes like this. Men speak more often and frequently interrupt women. Listeners recall more from male speakers than from female speakers, even when both use a similar speaking style and cover the same content. Women participate less actively in conversation. They do more smiling and gazing, and they are more often the passive by standers in professional and social conversations among peers. Women often their own statements into unsure comments. This is accomplished by using qualifiers and by adding tag question. These uncertain patterns weaken impact and signal a lack of power and influence. Only when girls are active and treated equally in the classroom will they be more likely to achieve equality in the workplace. (1)What does the authors mean when they say“Education is not a bystanders sport.”? A. Both boys and girls should do more sports. B. The girl students should be the audience to
