Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller`s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many other by the“Great American Dream”. Howe ver, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.

Miller's most famous play, Death of a SaIesman, is a powerful attack on the American system.with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into double with his worth. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment (伤感): if he can't do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at loss as to what t o do with his lack of sucess. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.

When it was first staged in 1949 ,the play was greeted with enthusiastic revews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics` Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.

Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury,Connecticut,on the evening of February 10,2005,the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.

The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a look-see. “We didn?t want to give the children rubbish,” says Linda. The books, reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists and Dollywood board members, included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats?s The Snowy Day and newer books like Anna Dewdney?s Llama Llama series.

Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work.. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to books I?ve never heard of .”

The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit there and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”

It was Saturday. As always, it was a busy one, for “Six days shall you labor and all your work” was taken seriously back then. Outside, Father and Mr. Patrick next door were busy chopping firewood. Inside their own houses, Mother and Mrs. Patrick were engaged in spring cleaning. Somehow the boys had slipped away to the back lot with their kites. Now, even at the risk of having Brother caught to beat carpets, they had sent him to the kitchen for more string(线). It seemed there was no limit to the heights to which kites would fly today.

My mother looked at the sitting room, its furniture disordered for a thorough sweeping. Again she cast a look toward the window. “Come on, girls! Let?s take string to the boys and watch them fly the kites a minute.”

On the way we met Mrs. Patric, laughing guiltily as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls.

There never was such a day for flying kites! We played all our fresh string into the boys? kites and they went up higher and higher. We could hardly distinguish the orange-colored spots of the kites. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back, watching it dancing up and down in the wind, and finally bringing it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again.

Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. Our mothers took their turn, laughing like schoolgirls. I think we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty and their dignity; children forgot their eve ryday fights and little jealousies. “Perhaps it?s like this in the kingdom of heaven,” I thought confusedly.

It was growing dark before we all walked sleepily back to the house. I suppose we had some sort of supper. I suppose there must have been surface tidying-up, for the house on Sunday looked clean and orderly enough. The strange thing was, we didn?t mention that day afterwards. I felt a little embarrassed. Surely none of the others had been as excited as I. I locked the memory up in that deepest part of me where we keep “the things that cannot be and yet they are.”

The years went on, then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen in a city apartment, trying to get some work out of the way while my three-year-old daughter insistently cried her desire to “go park, see duck.”

“I can?t go!” I said. “I have this and this to do, and when I?m through I?ll be too tired to walk that far.”

My mother, who was visiting us, looked up from the peas she was shelling. “It?s a wonderful day,” she offered, “really warm, yet there?s a fine breeze. Do you remember that day we flew kites?”

I stopped in my dash between stove and sink. The locked door flew open and with it a rush of memories. “Come on,” I told my little girl. “You?re right, it?s too good a day to miss.”

Another decade passed. We were in the aftermath(余波) of a great war. All evening we had been asking our returned soldier, the youngest Patrick Boy, about his experiences as a prisoner of war. He had talked freely, but now for a long time he had been silent. What was he thinking of --- what dark and horrible things?

“Say!” A smile sipped out from his lips. “Do you remember --- no, of course you wouldn?t. It probably didn?t make the impression on you as it did on me.”

I hardly dared speak. “Remember what?”

“I used t o think of that day a lot in POW camp (战俘营), when things weren?t too good. Do you remember the day we flew the kites?”

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.

“I have two kids in college, and I want to say …come home,? but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.

The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid form the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.

With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.

At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increa sed 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade,

“If we go on this way for another25 years, we won?t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”

Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.

66. According to Paragraph 1, why did the plan of Jacobs family fail?

A. The twins wasted too much money.

B. The father was out of work.

C. Their saving ran out.

D. The family fell apart.

67. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?

A. They asked their kids to come home.

B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.

C. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.

D. They got help from the school and the federal government.

68. Financial aid administrators believe that _______.

A. more families will face the same problem as the Jacobses

B. the government will receive more letters of complaint

C. college tuition fees will double s oon

D. America?s unemployment will fall

69.What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?

A. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.

B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.

C. They will try their best to send kids to college.

D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.

70.According to the last paragraph, the government will .

A. provide most students will scholarships

B. dismiss some financial aid administrators

C. stop the companies from making student loans

D. go on providing financial support for college students

Section A; Directions:Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write no more than THREE words for each answer.

Every two years, cities around the world make bids to the International Olympic Commission (IOC) to host the Olympic Games.Today, cities are selected through a much more rigorous(严厉的)process.

Any city that wants to host the Olympic Games puts in its name to the IOC and is considered an“Applicant City”.For the next ten months, the IOC investigates the city on several points:1)The city must prove that it is big enough to handle the Olympics,They also need to show that they can handle the high level of security needed at the games.

2) The city needs to convince(使明白)residents that the expenses of covering the Olympics (which may be covered by raising taxes) are worth it in city improvement and new jobs.

3)The city needs to maintain a highly positive media exposure to carry the games.

If the IOC decides that a city has fulfilled the three points above, the city is considered a“Candidate (候选) City”and goes into the second phase of the process. After submitting(递交)an application and an application fee.the IOC makes a final judging on which city is the best candidate for the coming Summer or Winter Olympic Games.

The costs for bidding for the games is incredibly high.Bid committees must pay an application fee(The fee for hosting the 2012 Olympics was $150,000 U.S.) to the IOC.Following these fees, the cities generally need to begin large construction projects like

building the“Olympic Village”,new sports arenas(竞技场)and stadiums,and transportation systems.

If the Olympics are so expensive, why do cities want to host the games? They have the desire to show pride in their city and their country, the eagerness to be in the international spotlight for two weeks, the opportunity to bring flew jobs into the community, and to build up tourism to that city.

It?s wrong to cheat in the Examinations!

It is known to us all that some students cheat in examinations at schoo1.

As students.we often take examinations at schoo1.but sometimes we have too many examinations, which are too difficult for us 。On the other hand.some of us are lazy and don?t work hard at their lessons。So when taking examinations, they sometimes cheat in order to get better results to please their parents and teachers。

In my opinion.it is wrong to do so, because it breaks the rules of schools and also lead to dishonesty and laziness of the students. We students should be honest and try to get good results by studying hard instead of cheating in examinations. What?s more,we should improve our study methods and get well prepared for examinations。Only in this way can we succeed in the future.
