Vol.33No.5 M ay 2012 第33卷第5期2012年5月赤峰学院学报（汉文哲学社会科学版） Journal of Chifeng University （Soc.Sci ）世界上每一种语言都有属于自己的称谓系统，每个称谓系统又由若干称谓语组成。称谓语作为一种特殊的语言符号，除了具有一般语言符号所具有的功能外，最重要的是它能反映出说话者之间的社会关系和社会地位，以及它所代表的文化内涵。在人际交往中，双方互相称呼，是必不可少的内容，有时在称谓上还要体现礼敬，因此在翻译称谓语时不可避免地要了解称谓语背后浓厚的文化内涵。翻译理论家尤金·奈达曾指出：“对于真正成功的翻译而言，熟悉两种文化甚至比掌握两种语言更重要，因为词语只有在其作用的文化背景中才有意义。”我们只有充分了解称谓作为复杂的语言系统的文化意义，才能找到合适的翻译方法。 一、中西方称谓文化差异 （一）亲属称谓 中国的亲属称谓系统可能是世界上最丰富的称谓系统，其称谓词语更是纷繁复杂。赵元任先生在《中国人的各种称呼语》中列举了110种亲属称谓语，每一种称谓语又有正式名称。 在西方，亲情观念相对淡薄很多，亲属称谓数量不仅少而且简单。英语中大体含有11个亲属称谓grandfather,grandmother,father,mother,son, daughter ，brother,sister,uncle,aunt ,cousin 。其中cousin 不仅没有血缘关系之分，甚至没有性别之 分，既可以指堂哥堂弟表哥表弟，也可指堂姐堂妹表姐表妹，由此词翻译也可以看出汉语称谓语中血缘关系和性别特征都很明显。 另外，在中国，人们在实际交往中与对方关系密切时也常常使用亲属称谓称呼来表示亲近，而且加尊﹑仁﹑贤等以示尊重。对年长一些的称仁兄﹑尊 兄等，年纪略轻的称贤弟﹑贤妹﹑仁弟等。现代社会中我们也经常会听到阿姨、叔叔、伯父等近乎亲属称谓的称呼，这种拟亲属称谓的普遍流行，也恰恰反映了中国人传统的伦理观念，重视血缘关系，实际上是家族观念的一种延伸和扩大。 （二）社会称谓 汉语的身份类称谓种类也很多而且范围广。受中国传统官本位思想的影响，人们与有官职的人交往时多以姓+职务相称，如王主任、吴处、张局等，另外还有姓+职称或职业，如李教授、张医生、刘老师等。但是在英美国家，人们与关系亲近的人可以直呼其名，即使是自己的领导或上司，其他情况下可以用姓氏加上Mr.,Mrs.,Ms 或Miss 来彼此称呼；头衔类称谓只局限于皇族﹑政府上层﹑宗教界﹑军界和法律界人士。其中Professor （教授）,Doctor （博士）的头衔可以用来作称谓，但是teacher 就不可以。 （三）自谦称谓 我国古代讲究自谦，自谦称谓中大都带有卑﹑下﹑鄙﹑贱﹑愚﹑小等词素，如卑人﹑卑职﹑卑下﹑鄙人﹑贱妾﹑微贱﹑下愚﹑小人﹑小的等等，或者是带有这种意思的词语，如仆﹑臣﹑不肖﹑不才等。这些称谓用语都是根据卑己﹑己谦的礼俗而产生的。老者自谦会用老朽﹑老拙﹑老汉等称呼；妇女自谦则用奴﹑奴家﹑贱妾﹑下妾等称呼。对人自称时以自谦的方式来表示对对方的敬重，但对别人直呼其名在礼节上就会显得轻简，被认为是一种失礼的行为，是对别人的不尊重，甚至使对方产生羞辱感。然而欧美人却习惯直呼他人姓名，甚至是自己的亲属，在称呼自己的时候也只会使用“I ”。“I ”在任何时候都需要大写，由此英美人以自我为中心的价值观可见一斑。 中西方称谓语差异与翻译 刘宗贤 （1.安徽大学 外国语学院；2.安徽工商职业学院 国际贸易系，安徽 合肥 231131） 摘要：称谓是一个民族文化的反映，是社交礼仪的重要方面，而称谓词语正是语言交际中不可缺少的组成部分。由于社会、 历史、文化、地理环境等诸多因素的不同，导致汉语称谓和英语称谓存在许多差异。关键词：称谓；文化差异；翻译中图分类号：H315.9 文献标识码：Ａ 文章编号：１６７３－２５９６（２０１２）０５－０１７７－０３ １７７－－

中美文化中家庭亲属称谓的差异及分析 过年是中华民族一年中最重要的节日，是整个家庭成员团聚的最好时间。拜年、互相祝福问候是过年不可缺少的活动，亲戚之间多以拱手礼拜年问候，晚辈给长辈要以磕头礼拜年，都表达了对对方的祝愿。在这个过程，家庭成员之间相互的称呼就显得尤为重要了，不管是平时非正式场合的称呼，还是正式的称呼，都表达出一种尊敬和礼貌。我长在一个传统的北方大家庭，过年期间，爷爷奶奶、姥姥姥爷家里辈分从上到下基本都互相见面，拜年，对于平时走动较近的亲戚的称呼很熟，但是遇见一个稍远点的亲戚，怎么称呼估计就得算一算或者问长辈了。随着年龄的增长，我也逐渐地对亲属间的称谓进行归纳，发现这些关系称谓好似难寻尽头。相反，在学习英语、接触了一些美国文化以及看美国电影的过程中，发现他们亲属间的称谓比较单一随意，远不及我们的复杂程度。 东北一带通常把爸爸的哥哥叫“大伯”“大爷”，父亲的弟弟叫“叔”，母亲的兄弟统称“舅”，父亲的姐们叫“姑姑”，母亲的姐妹称“姨”；而英语中父母的兄弟都称“uncle”，父母的姐妹统称“aunt”。这是因为两种语言形成并存在于不同的文化中，语言是文化的载体，一个民族的文化可以反映在语言上。不同的民族，文化背景不同，家庭结构不同，婚姻制度不同，语言上的称谓体系也有很大的差异。下面便就以下几个部分讲述中美亲属称谓的差异并进行简要分析。 1.长幼间称谓的差异 长幼说到底就是先后的区别，体现在家庭里就是辈分。在中国传统家庭中最讲究的就是辈分，辈分高低在家庭中很重要，家庭成员间严格按照这一秩序进行称呼。因此，长幼间的称呼划分的十分严格精细。 汉语中，我们把祖父称呼“爷爷”，祖母称“奶奶”，外祖父“姥爷”，外祖母“姥姥”，再往上长辈还要加一个“老”或者“太”字，如“太爷爷”“老奶奶”。对于晚辈，儿子的孩子称为“孙子”“孙女”，辈分再低就加一个“重”如“重孙子”、“重孙女”等。长辈、平辈、晚辈的长幼关系都有着严格的区分，辈分是放到第一位的，辈分明显要高于长幼，也就是先论辈分再论长幼，如舅舅和外甥，即使舅舅的年龄比外甥小，但在辈分上仍为是长辈，所以称呼时就不能用“弟”等平辈称谓。 其次，同一辈分要讲究长幼有序，同辈份也要分出大小，区分出哥哥和弟弟，

试评《红楼梦》中称谓语的翻译 在人类社会中，称谓系统是一个极其庞大的语言文化系统。它是人类终年累月形成 的规则和长期约定俗成的习惯相辅相成的产物，因此具有鲜明的民族性。称谓语作为语言 交际中不可缺少的组成部分,在许多情况下是传递给对方的第一信息,不同的称谓,反映了交 际双方的角色身份、社会地位、亲属关系和情感好恶等。语言内外所要表达的许多信息,通过称谓语,我们可以有更深层的理解。正因为如此,称谓语的翻译问题在翻译实践中有值得 探讨的必要。《红楼梦》是中国古典文学宝库中一颗璀璨夺目的明珠，这是一部描写了中 国封建时代末期的社会风俗画似的小说。在这部描写封建社会贵族世家的鸿篇巨著中，大 小人物达数百个之多。人物之间的语言交际过程中所使用的称谓语丰富多彩，使用规则也 极其繁杂，其人际称谓语的翻译正反映了中西文化的差异和交锋，也一直是研究的热点。 下文将借助《红楼梦》两大经典译本（杨宪益译和霍克斯译）的实例，对称谓语进行简要 分析，并对比研究其中一些称谓语的翻译方法。 一、英汉亲属称谓语的比较与翻译 世界上任何一个民族的语言体系中都有自已的称谓系统。由于不同的文化背景,各民族称谓语的数量和指称范围各有特色。中国传统文化“重名份,讲人伦”的封建伦理观念,与西方 社会“人为本,名为用”的价值观念,使中西方在称谓系统上存在着明显的差别。汉语中称 谓系统严密,分类精细,名目繁多,语义明晰;英语称谓词体系简单,分类粗疏,数量贫乏,语义 含混,如英语中的一个“cousin”涵盖了汉语中的“表哥、表弟、表姐、表妹、堂哥、堂弟、堂姐、堂妹”。两者之间的这种巨大差异,必然给英汉翻译带来不少困惑。但尊重文化传统,遵循表达习惯,是英汉称谓语互译必须遵守的原则。我们举例分析： （一） 1、黛玉虽不识,也曾听见他母亲说过:大舅贾赦之子贾琏,娶的就是二舅母王氏的内侄女。自幼假充男儿教养,学名叫王熙风。黛玉忙陪笑见礼,以“嫂”呼之。(第三回) 杨译：Though Tai-yu had never met her, she knew from her mother that ChiaLien, the son of her first uncle Chia Sheh had married the niece of Lady Wang ,her second uncle’ s wife.
