Unit 1 My Most Embarrassing experience

I had my most embarrassing experience when I was in the second year of college. During that period of time, I often like to chat with my friends by passing notes in class. My bitter story happened one Tuesday morning, when our English teacher was busy writing on the blackboard, trying to teach us, in her monotonous voice, the difference between “tolerable” and “tolerant”.

The teacher was hard-working, but I really wanted to share my good mood with my best friend, Tony. Therefore, I picked up my pen and wrote on a slip of paper, “Hey, I want to tell you something that will make you really envious of me,”and then I passed the slip to him. He quickly opened it and read it. Being too curious, he wasted no time writing on the note some words and passed it back. “What is it? Tell me immediately!” he asked. “Sally just gave me her cell phone number.” I responded. I could not wait to see his jealous face.

However, when he got my note, something unexpected happened. The note was grabbed by another hand. To my shock, the teacher was standing in front of Tony. She read the note in her hand loudly and looked sternly around the whole class. “Who passed the note to Tony? Who was so lucky to get Sally’s phone number?” She asked. All the class started to whisper, and I vaguely heard them talking about who started the passing of the note. My face turned red, and my heart beat quickly. Of course, those who sat around me knew I was the culprit. They looked at me, giggling quietly. Meanwhile, Sally blushed a deep crimson and looked very angry. She glared at me as if to say, “I am going to kill you.”

I did not stand up to admit I was the offender, but I felt so embarrassed that I really wished that there had been a place for me to hide myself. After the incident, I did not dare to pass notes in class anymore.

Unit 2 How Do Women and Men Groom Themselves?

When you get yourself ready to go to school or work in the morning, or attend a party in the

evening, you may have to do various preparations. What you consider as essential to prepare largely depends on whether you are a female or a male. Women and men take care of their appearance in different ways. Which are mainly shown in three areas.

One difference lies in the variety of beauty products that women and men use. Women have a great variety of tools and skincare products. For example, combs and clips for hair, brushed for powder foundation, and eyeliners for eyebrows, creams for face, to name just a few. Men, however, do not use so many things. They may comb their hair, but they seldom use cosmetics.

Another difference involves the amount of clothes women and men have. Females usually have many more clothes than men do. You may well be familiar with movie scenes in which a woman tried on the outfits in her wardrobe one after another and still hesitates about which one to wear. Unlike females, males do not buy themselves piles of clothes as long as they still have something at home.

The third difference is that women spend much more time grooming themselves than men do. It can easily take a woman half an hour or even several hours to get a perfect hair style or apply makeup to her face. In contrast, it may just take a man several minutes to tidy himself. All he needs to do is to comb his hair and put on whatever clothes he finds in the drawer.

To conclude, women and men behave differently in how they attend to their routine grooming chores. Such distinctions help create the typical images of females and males in human society.

Unit 3 A Successful Person

Alexander Fleming, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, is best-known for his discovery of penicillin in 1928. A diligent researcher, Fleming had big dreams and the determination, spirit, and enthusiasm to realize them.

Alexander Fleming was born on August 6, 1881 in Scotland. When he was young, he did well in school and earned a two-year scholarship to Kilmarnock Academy. In 1903, the young Alexander enrolled at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. He graduated with MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from the school with distinction in 1906.

Fleming’s interest was not just limited to laboratory work. He had zest and love for life, creative power and a warm heart. Since 1900, he had been a private in the London Scottish Regiment and served throughout World War One as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. It was his experience of witnessing many soldiers dying from infected wounds during the war that enhanced his determination to find a cure.

Following World War One, Fleming actively searched for anti-bacterial agent. In an article he submitted for the medical journal The Lance, Fleming explained why antiseptics were killing more soldiers that infection itself. He suggested that antiseptics be abandoned in practice. But despite his findings, most army physicians continued to use antiseptics even though this worsened the condition of the patients.

Flemming was angry about this, but he knew he had to find something really effective. A cautious attitude toward life made him highly responsible for his obligations and duties.

On September 3, 1928, when Fleming returned to his laboratory, he noticed that one sample from his earlier experiment was contaminated with a fungus, and the bacteria surrounded by it has been destroyed. Fleming then grew the mould separately and found that it produced a substance that killed a number of disease-causing bacteria. This substance was later named “Penicillin”. Its discovery has saved and is still saving millions of lives around the world.

Fleming changed the world of modern medicine by introducing the age of useful antibiotics. In 1999, he was named by Time magazine as one of the “100 Most Important People of the 20th Century”. He was memorized not only for his great discovery, but also for his determination in work and his love for life.

Unit 4 Should We Have National Parks

Have you ever been to a national park? How do you like it? Nowadays, national parks are very common in the world, and they can be found in many counties. Most people believe that national parks are necessary because they can help protect the variety of species on earth and offer people a place where they can explore nature and learn more about the environment. However, there are also different voices about the establishment of national parks.

Some people are against national parks because they argue that wild areas should not be disturbed, and wild animals should be left entirely alone. But I think these people may not have realized that some wild animals and plants have become so rare that proper protection is necessary and urgent. The establishment of national parks aims to provide a safe home for native plants and animals. For instance, Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province has provided a natural habitat for giant pandas and many other precious species.

Other people oppose national parks because they worry that too much exploration of national parks can be damaging to the environment. True, extreme exploration will do harm to anything. But reasonable exploration of national parks can not only increase people’s knowledge about the environment, but also is beneficial to the protection of biodiversity. The thing is, in considering building up a national park, the authorities and experts involved must plan carefully to make sure that the national park will play a significant role in protecting biodiversity. In addition, the government can use the park as a living school to teach people the importance of environmental protection.

All in all, I agree that national parks are necessary. If we can make good use of them, we can

not only protect plant and animal species, but also help people learn more about our environment.

Unit 5 Life As A Single Child

A prevalent view in today’s media is that the single-child generation is a spoiled generation. Those growing up as single children are “little emperors” and “little empresses” who enjoy all the comfort and attention from their parents and grandparents. In a word, they are the happiest generation in China. However, I strongly disagree with this view. In fact, based on my own experiences, I think life as a single child is rather lonely and lacks freedom.

I grew up as the only child in my family, just like most kids of my age. My parents and grandparents made me the center of their attention. I did enjoy the comfort of the home they provided me. But I cannot say that I was in any way spoiled and happy.

I felt lonely in childhood. When I was very young, I spent a lot of time telling stories to myself or fighting with imaginary robots. Games like chess and cards were luxuries for me as I could seldom find anyone to play with. When I was able to read, I spent a lot of time reading or writing alone. When I was the only one at home, all I thought about was what I should do next, what I wanted, and what I needed.

I also had little freedom in the family. My parents and grandparents put all their focus on me. Whatever I did was closely monitored. They decided what clothes I should wear, what food I should eat, and what toys I should play with. I felt my life was totally controlled and planned by them.

As far as I know, the kids around me all had similar experiences. So, it is a real pity that people keep saying we belong to the most spoiled and the happiest generation. They should stop labeling us this way as I know from my own childhood that life as a single child is far from the happiest.
