Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you're never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.

Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.

Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.

When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset (思维模式)helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they're doing something unusual or “too hard”.

So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It's never too late to learn a new language. If you're older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you're

a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!

1. By “Language is their life”, the author means that children________.

A.can't live without language

B. lead a happy life every day

C.practice a new language a lot

D. are taken good care of adults

2. What may make it hard for the old people to learn to a new language?

A.They are afraid of being laughed at.

B. They usually have too many interests.

C.They think making mistakes is natural.

D. They always make all kinds of mistakes.

3. Which of the following shows the difference between children and adults in learning a new language?

A.The behaviors they have.

B. The learning attitudes.

C.The future plans they have made.

D. The materials they are using.

4. According to the author, a new language________.

A.can never be learned by the old people

B. can be grasped by the old people easily

C. can be understood only by the old people

D. can be learned by both the old and the young

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee(拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perhaps the show's popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese_people_are_forgetting_how_to_write_their_own_language_without_computeri zed_help. Software on smartphones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It's possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there's still hope for the paint brush. China's Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher's examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture, ” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don't forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

5.Which of the following is closest in meaning with the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?

A.Ever Chinese can write Chinese characters easily, especially with computers

B.Only with the help of computers can some Chinese people write Chinese characters

C.Despite the help of computers, Chinese people have forgotten how to write D.Computers are the only means to rely on to write Chinese characters for many people

6.What can we learn about the Character Hero?

A.It's open to people of all ages and all walks.

B.It's the most-viewed TV programs in China.

C.It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.

D.It draws great public attention across the country.

7.Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?

A.Chinese people don't refer to dictionaries very often.

B.Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.

C.Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.

D.Chinese people needn't write by hand as often with the help of technology.

8.According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is__________.A.necessary for adults to survive in China

B.a requirement made by the Education Ministry

C.helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive

D.an ability to be developed only when you are students

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at

college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.“It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person, ” said the 30year old man.

Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

9. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?

A. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.

B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.

C. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.

D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.

10. Traveling alone is challenging because________.

A. you can only depend on yourself whatever happens

B. it is hard for you to prove yourself to others

C. you have to make things on your own

D. it will finally build your character

11. What can we infer about Chris Richardson?

A. He started traveling alone at an early age.

B. He was once shot in the arm.

C. His website inspires others a lot.

D. He used to work as a salesman.

12. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Travel Abroad

B. Travel Light

C. Travel Alone

D. Travel Wide and Far

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn't want me for the film-it wanted somebody as well known as Paul-he stood up for me.

I don't know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.

The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other-but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen.

We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back-he with his Newman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.

I last saw him a few months ago. He'd been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn't talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn't need a lot of words.

4.Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?

A.Paul Newman wanted it.

B.The studio powers didn't like his agent.

C.He wasn't famous enough.

D.The director recommended someone else.

5.Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?

A.They were of the same age.

B.They worked in the same theater.

C.They were both good actors.

D.They had similar characteristics.

6.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Their belief.

B.Their care for children.

C.Their success.

D.Their support for each other.

7.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To show his love of films.

B.To remember a friend.

C.To introduce a new movie.

D.To share his acting experience.

根据第一段中的“When the studio didn't want me for the film -it wanted somebody as well known as Paul-he stood up for me”可知, 摄影棚起初不愿意给作者角色的原因是想找一个与Paul一样著名的人物。

根据文章第二段中的“We were respectful of craft(技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors”可知, 作者与Paul之所以拥有持久的友谊是因为他们有相似的性格特征。

根据第三段中的“We shared the belief that if you're f ortunate enough to have success, you should put something back”可知, 下文的内容是对the belief的解释, that引导同位语从句, 解释说明the belief的具体内容。 故选A项。

根据全文内容, 尤其是第一段中的“I first met Paul Newman in 1968”以及最后一段中的“I last saw him a few months ago”可知, 该篇文章的写作目

My dad is the kind of parent that has to know where I am and what time I'll be home. He is strict with me because he cares about me more than anything in the world. My dad's strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm and his dad would throw wooden boards at him when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores (日常杂务) done and walked to school so that he would make it to basketball practice by five. After school he went home to start a long night of chores.

On top of all the responsibilities my dad had at home, he played three sports and went to school. School would have been easy, but my dad had dyslexia (诵读困难).Every teacher my dad had thought that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took the time to sit down and teach him how to read and write. To this day my dad tells me how grateful he is to that teacher who gave him a chance.

The best part about my dad is his attitude toward our family. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts a smile on his face because he knows the family is a lot more important than his own problems.

I know that I get my best qualities from my dad. He has shown me that with hard work I can accomplish something, and have fun while doing it. I know that my dad has strict rules because he loves me and wants me to learn responsibility.

1.删除第一个of或第一个of→that make sure (that)为固定用法, 意为“确保”, 故删除第一个of或将第一个of改为that。

5.fire→firing by doing sth.

be optimistic about 意为“对……感到乐观”。

9.删除the in space意为“在太空中”, 为固定用法, 故删除the。

故将is→was。

(1) In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal. Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change. 1. Which statement is true? A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know. B. A hostess always seats a small group at a large table. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chi mps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and wa its in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Th en we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. Ho wever, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her b abies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observi ng and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she firs t arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to be gin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For exampl e, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until th en everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chi mps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how ch
