he world.

Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the stud ents? hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psycholo gists now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the stud ents. One hot night last August, I tried everything I could think of — a warm b ottle, songs etc. to make him fall into sleep, but he just couldn?t do it. Si nce I believed that a long night was waiting for me ahead, I had no choice but to bring a TV into his room to kill off the hours until dawn. I was sur prised that the moment I turned on the TV the baby became quiet right aw ay and fixed his little eyes brightly on the screen. Not willing to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the boring TV programs.

I heard no more of the baby?s crying that night and the next morning wh en I went into his room, I found him still watching TV by himself. I found there was a metaphor(暗喻) in my baby?s behavior(行

I find that our students don?t read and they look down upon reading and make light of those of us wh o teach it. All they want to do is watch TV. After this experience with the

baby, however, I have drawn a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If televisi on is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fig ht against it? Let them watch what they want!

After the accident .my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I?d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. One day a very skilled artist met a beautiful woman who immediately became the object of his affections. As he observed her and spoke with her, he admired her more and more. He showered her with kindness and words of praise until she consented to be his wife. Not long after they were married, however, the beautiful woman found out that she was more the object of his artistic interest than of his affections. When he admired her classic beauty, it was as though he were standing in front of a work of art rather than in front of a human being to whom he had pledged his love and promised his life. And soon he expressed his great desire to put her rare beauty on canvas. “Please sit for me in the workroom,” he pleaded, “and I will make your beauty permanent. The work will be my masterpiece!” She was humble and patient as well as flattered by his words, so she said, “Yes, my love. I will be happy to sit for you.” So the beautiful, young wife of the art ist sat meekly for hours in his studio, not complaining. Day after day she sat patiently, smiling as she posed, because she loved him and because she hoped that he would see her love in her smile and obedience. She sometimes wanted to call out to him, “Ple ase love me and want me as a person rather than as an object!” But instead, she spoke nothing but words which pleased him. At length, as the labor drew to close, the painter became wilder in his passion for his work. He only rarely turned his eyes from the canvas to look at his wife. As he stood there gazing at his beautiful work of art, he cried with a loud voice, “This is indeed life itself!” Then he turned to his beloved and saw that she was dead! (I)★★★ MONTREAL (Reuters) – Crossing the US-Canada border(边界)to go to church on a Sunday (安全)rules. cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US-which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关)station in this are is closed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later. Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法). Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint. Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said. 1.We learn from the text that Richard Albert is . A.an American living in Township 15 B.a Canadian living in a Quebec village C.a Canadian working in a customs station D.an American working in a Canadian church 2.Albert was fined because he . A.failed to obey traffic rules B.broke the American security rules C.worked in St. Pamphile without a pass D.damaged the gate of the customs office 3.The underlined word “detour” in paragraph 5 means .

Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK's first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology? One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £ 1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK's first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn't all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access, with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second. The wider application is to support connected equipment on the "internet of things" -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other. Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole. Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. (1)Why does Prof William Webb say "the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes"? A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B. 5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C. 5G helps people communicate better with each other. D. He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks. (2)The underlined word "addressing" in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to________. A. making a speech to B. trying to solve C. managing to decrease D. responding to (3)The last paragraph indicates that . A. it'll take several years .to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK B. 5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C. customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones D. it's probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain (4)What do we know about the text?
