大学英语作文：How To Alleviate China’s Traffic Congestion
As our economy grows at a fever pitch, and more and more people are moving into the major cities and industrial centers, traffic congestion becomes the order of the day.
Traffic congestion not only creates headaches for commuters, but also reduces productivity by taking away valuable time from work. This sickness that plagues our cities must be at least put under control, if not cured.
Some people advocate that more roads be built to accommodate the increase in traffic, others think that enlarging the capacity of public transit systems: buses, subway, trains…is the answer.
Building more roads would mean a lot of land will be appropriated—not a very good prospect for economic, agricultural, and environmental reasons. On the other hand, forcing everyone to take public transit will bring inconvenience to those whose use of their cars is essential to their work. Putting more buses on the road may have the opposite effect as big buses tend to clog up narrow streets. Building an extensive subway system can be the ideal answer, but that is very expensive.
Clearly, we cannot go for one single solution. A compromise must be struck between the different solutions. My personal view is that for cities that have plenty of unused land, more roads should be built. Having special lanes reserved for bicycles and motorcycles should encourage more people to use bicycles and motorcycles instead of cars. As a long-term solution, extensive subway, or surface monorail systems should be built for all the major cities
大学英语作文：An Unforgettable day
It was a sunny balmy afternoon at the end of a leisurely summer. I was driving on a winding country road with a lady friend. Little did I know that I was to have a close call that would have almost ruined the rest of my life.
Earlier that day, a friend called me to tell me that our mutual friend Rosy was arriving back from Taiwan after the summer holidays. Since there was no airport in the immediate vicinity of the university, she would need a ride to come back on campus.
Being mildly interested in that girl, I jumped at the chance to play hero. The trip was not particular long or arduous. I was to pick her up from a friend’s home that was a mere 80 miles from campus—a piece of cake, I said to myself.
Everything went well. The country road was almost deserted. Visibility was good and I was not driving very fast. The conversation was lively but not distracting.
About half an hour into the drive, I rounded a corner and noticed two small children, aged around 10, waiting to cross the road after getting off their school bus. My mind was not particularly focused on them because I thought they would not cross the roa

d when a truck was coming through on their side. The two kids looked to their left, watching the truck intensely. As soon as the truck passed, and without a thought, they started to dash across the road. I was petrified, to say the least. My heart almost leaped out of my throat. Time seemed to have come to a standstill. It was like a nightmare coming into reality. I felt I was in the slow motion crash scene of a movie. I did not even have the time to brake or steer clear.
By providence smiled on me that day. The two kids missed my car by less than an inch. Imagine what would have happened if I had hit them? They would have been killed instantly. I would have been charged with manslaughter and thrown into jail. My career would be over before it even got started. The kind of inhumane treatment I would receive from fellow inmate, I could only guess but hate to imagine. I will never be a whole person again even if I were to be released early for good behavior. My life would be over. Even if I had a good lawyer that could have gotten me off, I would have carried that guilt in my mind for the rest of my life.
Even today, thirty-six years later, the memory of that day is still fresh on my mind. I have my lucky star to thank for having both parties gotten off unscathed.

I would never forget that day I first met my girl-friend.
Before I realized what had happened, I was thrown flat onto the concrete road, knocking my head against the front wheel of the bike. Soft dust blurred my eyes and grated my teeth. This must be worse than all the traffic accidents I’ve heard of, I thought to myself and got ready to shout at the person who should take responsibility of this accident. But when I raised my head, I found a face so beautiful and so sweet that I could not refuse to fall for. I smiled as handsome as possible and ask: “ I’m sorry, are you OK?” For my kindness, as well with my later hard chasing, that girl became my girl-friend. This is really a memorable experience for me!

In the old days of China, boys and girls were treated unequally. In most people’s minds, having boys was much better than having girls in their families because boys could work harder than girls to maintain families. Now, in China, people’s minds have changed. Boys and girls have an equal status. However, because boys and girls have different personalities and different thoughts, they are raised differently in some ways such as care from home and education from school.
Boys and girls are most familiar with their homes, where they can receive love from families, get meals, and have sleep. However, they are raised in different ways at home. Boys have more freedom. They can go outside freely. When they come back home late, they are just questioned “where did you go?” by their parents, and then no more question

s are asked. Parents always encourage boys to be outgoing and independent. The reason for people to do that is boys have much stronger bodies. That is also one reason for more parents send their sons to study abroad rather than sending girls. Even though lots of Chinese girls study in Concordia University, most of them have relatives here. In contrast, girls are physically a little weaker than boys in general, which leads parents concern more about girls’ safety. When girls wish for going out, they are always asked lots of questions by their parents; for instance, where is she going? When will she be back? Which friends will she be with? Most parents will tell them that they do not come home late. Unfortunately, if a girl goes out to play and comes home very late, she will have a long conversation with her parents about her safety and her problems since most parents hope their daughters are in safe and be gentle.
Schools are boys and girls’ second “home”, where they spend lots of time and energy. They learn in schools and play in schools. In class, teachers use different strategies to guide them to study effectively. Compared with girls, boys do not have self-control to concentrate on their studies. They just want to spend more time on playing. Thus, teachers teach boys much harder and give them more pressure in class. If someone does not complete his homework, he will be in trouble because his parents will be asked to come to school. Nobody wants his parents to have a meeting with his teachers. In PE class, boys are always organized to play basketball and football since they are likely to have sports activities. Boys also prefer science course such as math, physics than liberal arts. In schools, girls are much different from boys. Girls are more self-controlled. Girls generally study on their own initiative. Teachers do not often blame girls. After failing in exams, girls are more likely to be encouraged and given confidence by teachers since girls’ hearts are more fragile than boys’. In PE class, girls like to have dancing class, which is more suitable for them. Furthermore, girls prefer liberal arts such as literature. One of my friends is studying on literature major in a university in China. To my surprised, in his class, there are 42 girls out of 50 students.
