The City Mouse and the Country Mouse

Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, "Do come and see me at my house in the country." So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city."

The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away quickly and hid.

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."

从前,有两只老鼠,它们是好朋友。一只老鼠居住在乡村,另一只住在城里。很多年以后,乡下老鼠碰到城里老鼠,它说:“你一定要来我乡下的家看看。”于是,城里老鼠就去了。乡下老鼠领着它到了一块田地上它自己的家里。它把所有最精美食物都找出来给城里老鼠。城里老鼠说:“这东西不好吃,你的家也不好,你为什么住在田野的地洞里呢你应该搬到城里去住,你能住上用石头造的漂亮房子,还会吃上美味佳肴,你应该到我城里的家看看。”

乡下老鼠就到城里老鼠的家去。房子十分漂亮,好吃的东西也为他们摆好了。可是正当他们要开始吃的时候,听见很大的一阵响声,城里的老鼠叫喊起来:“快跑!快跑!猫来了!”他们飞快地跑开躲藏起来。

过了一会儿,他们出来了。当他们出来时,乡下老鼠说:“我不喜欢住在城里,我喜欢住在田野我的洞里。因为这样虽然贫穷但是快乐自在,比起虽然富有却要过着提心吊胆的生活来说,要好些。”

福建师范大学学报(哲学社会科学版) 2005年第3期(总第132期) JOURNAL OF FUJ IAN NORMAL UN IV ERSIT Y (Philosophy and S ocial Sciences Edition ) No 13,2005G eneral ,No 1132 鲁迅的儿童观和他的童话翻译 刘少勤 (华侨大学中文系,福建泉州 362000) 摘 要:儿童代表一个民族的“未来”,鲁迅一生都在关注中国的儿童。在他的译作中,与儿童有关的作品占了很大的比重,内容涉及儿童的地位、儿童的教育和儿童文学。本文细致考察了鲁迅所译相关的全部译作,由此探讨鲁迅特殊的社会责任感和价值追求。 关键词:儿童的位置;儿童的教育;儿童文学   ΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞ 中图分类号:I210193 文献标识码:A 文章编号:1000-5285(2005)03-0080-05 1848年鸦片战争后,中国在外部力量的牵引下,开始艰难地走出传统,走向现代。历史遗留的问题太多了,许多事情在西方是次第展开的,在中国却堆积在了一块,在同一时间发生了。“个人”的发现,“妇女”的发现,“儿童”的发现,都集中在新文化运动时期。在传统中国,个人受到家国和道统观念的迫压,妇女受到男人的迫压,儿童受到成年人的迫压。三种迫压具有内在的一致性,都体现了“主”和“奴”的关系。个人匍匐在地,妇女匍匐在地,儿童匍匐在地。鲁迅说中国人向来没有争取到做人的资格,并非夸大之语。 想要变革中国社会,让中国呈现出新的风貌,“首 在立人,人立而后凡事举”[1])P50 。立“个人”,立“妇 女”,立“儿童”。在鲁迅的译作中,与儿童有关的作品很不少。鲁迅选择这些作品,跟他“立儿童”的价值追求有直接的关系。 儿童的位置 历史是过去的事实,现实是既成的事实,只有“未来”包含着各种不同的可能性,叫人去想象,去探求,给人以希望。鲁迅对中国的未来寄予了很大的希望。 “我时时想到中国,想到将来,愿为中国出点微力。” [2] 他说,以往的中国只有两个时代,“做稳了奴隶的时代”和“想当奴隶而不得的时代”。中国的社会历来都在一治一乱中恶性循环。太平了一段时间,就会出乱子,治 世就变成了乱世。于是打打杀杀,死了很多人,毁了很多财物,有人开始重整山河秩序。改了朝,换了代,弄出了一个新皇帝,社会制度却没有任何变化,依然是人压迫人,人吃人。鲁迅期待中国能在未来开辟出“第三时代”,自由、平等,不再是人奴役人的时代。 未来的时代属于未来的人,也需要由未来的人来建设。“看十来岁的孩子,便可以逆料二十年后中国的情 形。”[3](P1) 要想让中国有光明的未来,就必须在儿童身上 倾注心思和精力,就必须为儿童的健康成长创造条件。鲁迅批判了传统中国以长者为本位的价值观念。“本位应在幼者,却反在长者;置重应在将来,却反在过去。前者做了更前者的牺牲,自己无力生存,却苛责后来者又来专做他的牺牲,毁灭了一切发展本身的能 力。”[1](P125)应该倒过来,长者以幼者为重,为他们的生 长铺路,牺牲自己。“后起的生命,总比以前的更有意义,更近完全,因此也更有价值,更可宝贵;前者的生 命,应该牺牲于他。”[1](P125) 身为父辈,应当抛掉“恩人 意识”。中国人老强调“养育之恩”,似乎因为有了“养育”,父辈对子辈就获得了理所当然的支配权,把父辈和子辈弄成了债主和债户一般的关系。鲁迅主张,父辈应该用“中间物意识”取代“恩人意识”。什么是“中间物意识”?每个人的生命总有一天要完结,从那一天以后,一切东西都与自己无关了。想到这一点,会叫人感到沮丧,感到虚无。佛家有关生命无常的思想,存在主义哲学对生命意义的追问,引起了很多人的共鸣。但 — 08—Ξ Ξ作者简介:刘少勤(1969—  ),男,浙江龙泉人,福建师范大学文学院博士研究生,华侨大学中文系副教授,主要从事中国现代文学和翻译文学的研究工作。 收稿日期:2004-11-01
