Passage A

Americans like to have meetings. In the United States, there are about eleven million meetings taking place every working day. The reason is that people can often find better ideas when getting together. A meeting gives each member a chance to present his or her ideas and to discuss them with others. People hope that they can have a better use of time and money in this way.

However, meetings must be controlled. If everyone wants to have a chance at a meeting, it can be very noisy; some people may even get angry. On the other hand, if no one wants to say anything, the meeting will be very dull and awkward. How can we deal with this problem? In fact, there is a man called chairman at a meeting, whose job is to keep the discussion in order. He helps to gu ide the discussion and makes decisions. Passage D

Welcome to join our group. I believe that everybody has noticed the dark circle-like lines on a piece of wood. We call them tree rings. They are so natural and beautiful that we usually keep them on our furniture as decoration. Actually they are the basic texture for many of our designs now. That is why some of the art students are more interested in them. But do you know how these tree rings are formed?

Well, let me tell you something about it. As we know, trees live in natural con ditions, they don't have anything to protect them against various weather conditions, especially cold winter. So any change in the weather can affect their growth. In the summer, when the weather is good for their growth, they grow fast and this part of wood is white and wide, but in winter, or when the weather is bad for growth, they grow very slowly and this part of wood is dark and narrow. Thus a tree ring is formed between these two parts.

It's very important for us to know that tree rings are more than beautiful. Scientists can tell us not only the tree's age, but also the weather conditions about the years during which a tree has grown. If the tree ring for a certain year is wider than other years, we can say that the weather of that year is good, if the tree ring is narrower, then the weather must be bad.

16. What is the passage about?

A) Telephone calls and trees. B) Travel in the forest.

C) Grow plants for decoration. D) Tree rings and weather conditions.

17. What are tree rings?

A) The imagined lines on old trees. B) The beautiful decoration for trees.

C) The dark circle-like lines on a piece of wood. D) The important materials for making furniture.

18. What can we use tree rings to do?

A) To find trees in a circle. B) To make furniture change size.

C) To tell something about the weather. D) To get something for house decorating.

19. What can we say if the tree ring is narrow?

A) The weather of that year is good. B) The weather of that year must be bad.

C) The wood is older than we expected. D) The wood is younger than we expected.

20. On which class is the talk given?

一、视听说教程 Unit 1 Life is a learning curve 1、Long conversation M: Miranda, let's speak about your performance in class. You're not participating; you're careless with your assignments and often hand them in late. You don't want to be here, do you? W: I'm sorry Dr. Smith. It's just ... I've got lots of things to do. I'm studying Web design and I'm a first-class player on our golf team. It's hard to see why I need to take a Spanish language class! M: Well, I'm sorry you feel that way, but learning another language can improve your performance in all of your efforts. And it can be very useful sometimes, for instance, when you visit your father in Mexico. W: Gosh! What do you mean, professor? Just because my father does business in Mexico I'm supposed to learn Spanish —on top of everything else I have to learn? It's just too much! And if I don't spend enough time on the golf course, I won't remain a first-class player on the golf team. I still don't see why I should learn a language that's so hard for me. There are no verb tenses on the golf course or in Web design! M: Listen Miranda, I've known your father since we were students at university 20 years ago —and have known you since you were a little girl. Of course, there are no verb tenses in golf or Web design. But I am giving you good advice. Please listen. W: Yes, of course, you're like my favorite uncle. M: Your brain isn't like a cup that has water flowing over its edge when it is full. Instead, it's like a muscle. Learning Spanish exercises your brain in new ways, making it stronger. It will strengthen your critical thinking skills and creativity. W: Really?! Then I guess I can give it a try. Question: 1、How is the woman doing in the man's class? 2、What does the woman think of learning Spanish? 3、What do we know from this conversation about the man? 4、What is the woman most likely to do after talking with the man? 2、passage 2 Have you ever heard of homeschooling? It is a legal choice for parents in most countries to provide their children with a learning environment as an alternative to public or private schools outside the home. Parents cite numerous reasons for homeschooling their children. Reading Comprehension (24%) Passage 1 Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boy to meet girl. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars introducing eligible marriage partners to each other, but parents also play a part in the ritual by which young Koreans meet. In Confucian Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred rite, the scene of the initial meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage and keeping the bloodlines pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of discreet signals with her mother, where her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders an orange juice it might signal that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a coffee indicates she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introductions being done by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man or woman in the country who has not gone through this process ——sometimes six or seven times.
