The 31st October each year is traditionally Halloween. But on this day the atmosphere is much like its name sounding like the “terror”. Wh en Halloween comes, the children will not wait to wear the colorful clothes, wearing strange masks, carrying a lantern “Jack Light” going from one household to another, and ask the adults for holiday gifts. The most well-known symbol of Halloween is these two —the fantastic “Jack Light” and“not inviting you to eat, you will make trouble”.

“Jack Light” looks very cute, which is also very simple. Hollow out (挖空)the pumpkin, carve out eyes and a smiling mouth, put a candle in the melon, and then light it. People far away can see the charmingly naive (天真的) smiling face. This is the kids' favorite plaything. However, the highlight of Halloween is on the table — you need to not only prepare good food to entertain those who come to trouble the “little devil”,but also in this special holiday dress for your table. Do not let your guests look down upon you!

Before the Christian era, the Celts held a ceremony in the summer and they did not appreciate the mercy of God and the sun. Soothsayers (占卜者) then ignited (发火) and witchcraft (巫术) was

said to stop devils wandering around. Later, the Romans used the nuts to celebrate the Apple Harvest Festival on October 31. In the Middle Ages, people wore animal-shaped dresses and Halloween masks to drive off the ghosts at night. Although it had been replaced by the Celtic and Roman Christianity religious activities, the early practices were preserved.

Now, the children with all kinds of jokes wear the costumes and masks for the Halloween party. The ball is often hung around the walls papered with witches, black cats, ghosts and skeletons. Terrifying pumpkin lanterns are hanging on the window and the doorway. Children often try to bite the hanging apple.

4.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE about Halloween?

A. Halloween is on October 31st every year.

B. The atmosphere is much like its name sounding terrible on that day.

C. When Halloween comes, children wouldn't wear colorful clothes and strange masks.

Halloween comes, the children will not wait to wear the colorful clothes, wearing strange masks, carrying a lantern ‘Jack Light’”可知C项表述不正确,will not wait to的意思是“迫不及待地做某事”;根据第一段的最后一句话可知D项表述正确。

5.What's the meaning of the underlined word “highlight” in t he second paragraph?

A. The most terrible part.

B. The most wonderful part.

C. The busiest part.

D. The longest part.

答案与解析B从本句中的“However”和“you need to not only prepare good food to entertain those who come to trouble the ‘little devil’,but also in this special holiday dress for your table.”可知,这里是万圣节最精彩的部分。highlight“最精彩的部分”。

6.Why did people wear animal-shaped dresses and Halloween masks at night in the Middle Ages?

A. Because they liked these dresses and masks.

B. Because they liked animals and pumpkins.

C. Because they wanted to show their characters.

D. Because they wanted to drive the ghosts away.

答案与解析D根据第三段的“In the Middle Ages, people wore animal-shaped dresses and Halloween masks to drive off the ghosts at night”可知D项是正确的。

7.What's the main idea of the passage?
