Illusions of pastoral peace

Though city born and city bred, I have a preference for country life. As the song reads, “Down by yon shady harbor. The thrushes they were warbling. The violets they were charming.”Nothing can be compared with the first cockcrow, the twittering of birds at dawn, the sight of the rising sun glinting on the trees and pastures.

Here comes the first point. Early man lived in woods and forests, plains, jungles, close to nature and kind to nature. They lived in harmony. Watch the first glow of sunshine shed on the brunches and feathers of a variety of birds and peacocks. Walk down the path to watch the monkey families. Pick up petals of flowers or count the stars into the night and lie down to embrace with the earth, the grass, and the pureness. What exist in the city? We see men chasing for the chances, money, status, glory, fame, and rank. Everything but the serene moments for our heart and mind to relax. Even a pure peasant will be like them if he should live there up to a year. It’s not that city men are all of these, but pretty

well. And the next question, when it comes to the foggy weather that would kill tens of hundreds of people, would you still vote for the city life? Justice is a thing that the nature holds. She always keeps an eye on our city life. When she finds factories emitting poisonous gases into the atmosphere, she would say,” Bring foggy weather to them so as to teach them a lesson”

Too much pollution! Air pollution, water pollution, solid objects pollution… Foggy weather is such that it’s a black picture compared with the mist rising from the trees and smokes rising from the chimney. Which, the latter would be a picture describing it as if we were in the heaven.

What would you suppose on seeing the photo where peasants in a cottage go to have dinner under the same tree? A true heaven?

Here comes the second point.

We all have the same feeling that people living next door in one apartment may not greet with us even in a year or more. They may choose to hurt their noses rather than saying hello to us. Even some of them are too jealous, mean and shrewd to the extent that a mere

thought or mention about them may make us disgusted.

When it comes to a jealous, mean and shrewd neighbor, would you still vote for the city life?

But neighbors in a cottage may borrow needle and thread, but they would return them even ahead of schedule. When they return them, we may give them some produce like corn, bread, and flour. Even so, we may still be very glad. Because it’s a heart-to-heart talk.

Cottage neighbors are pure and good people. They have lived there for a long time. The precious heritage which is called pureness descends on from generation to generation. They are born to be pure!

When it comes to food safety, would you still vote for the city life?

The country dwellers never experience anxieties of this sort. They work on the land day and night, wishing the crop to grow up, and then have a good harvest. Because it’s organic farming, they may not worry about any poisonous drugs adding to the produce. What’s more, they can have fun when working on the land. Of which the ability is scanty in the city. Children in the country may start cooking, breeding the animals,

taking care of the old, sewing and washing clothes at an early age. But it may be completely different in the city. Some of the children there are born to enjoy. They may not understand what the meaning of “independence” is. Worse still, they may stay in their parents’ houses and be bred to their death.

I’m eager for living with animals, trees and log cabin. A mere thought of this may make me go into raptures. Turkeys, turtles, fish, deer, bears, monkeys, squirrels, thrushes, eagles, lions, beavers, koalas, bats and kangaroos. So many trees stand side by side, which make green waves from side to side. Dew glistens in all the colors of rainbow. If you delayed one hour, pleasure would surround you and all the troubles would be gone.

But look at the plants in the greenhouse!

When you have a heavy traffic or when you have swallowed too many car gases, would you still vote for the city life?

But look at this! Cars come and go without trouble.

A child climbs onto the ox and begins playing the flute.

Last but not least, people in the city have formed a bad habit. They prefer fast food restaurant to having

breakfast at home. They may start working at five or six o’clock. To be frank, I could do without being woken up at an early hour only to spoil my sound sleep. What’s more, people in the city may become couch potatoes because they sit on the couch and watch TV, eating junk food at the same time. Life in the country may not be as fast as that in the city. Though they lead a gentle life, they don’t fail to notice their health.

With all of this, would you still vote for the city life?

An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini. The city at one time must have been prosperous, for it enjoyed a high level of civilization. Houses -- often three storeys high -- were built of stone. They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls. The city was equipped with a drainage system, for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets. The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century . until Roman times. In the most sacred room of temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth century . It's missing head happened to be among remains of the fifth century . This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity. 1.

Lesson 41 Illusions of pastoral peace Key to Composition Special Note: Pram this point in the course, while the Students' Book suggests a choice of two compositions, only one is chosen as a model. A possible answer Plan and ideas for composition Title: Give the country Introduction: Never understood city-lovers — city a place to visit, to go shopping, to see special exhibitions, etc. — not live in Development: Advantages — living in country — quiet — more healthy — less traffic — fresh air — fresh food from farms or village shops — people polite and friendly. . . Disadvantages —living in city —noisy —dirty —stressful —people always in rush —rude, unfriendly Conclusion: Always a mystery why some country people say — like to live in city Composition I have never understood city-lovers. For me a city is a place to visit for a few hours, to go shopping, to see special exhibitions, shows, plays and films. But it's not a place to live in, even though thousands do. Usually they are tied to the city by their jobs or perhaps even by family. There are so many advantages to living in the country. It is quiet and more healthy. There is far less traffic on the roads and the air is so much fresher. Instead of buying everything in packets from a supermarket, in the country we can always buy fresh food from farms or village shops every day — milk, fruit, fresh eggs, vegetables and meat. And we don't have to look at "Use by. . . " labels to see when we must use something by: we know that everything is fresh. And the people in the country are always so polite and friendly too — as long as you obey the unwritten rules of the countryside, that is. On the other hand, there are so many disadvantages to living in a town or city. The first thing most country people notice is the noise and dirt. It must be the traffic, but many country people find it difficult to breathe in the city. And it is stressful, too: people always seem to be in a rush, and they are so often rude and unfriendly. There are so many advantages to living in the country that it is a mystery to me why some country people say they would like to live the city. In fact, I just cannot understand how anyone can even consider living in the city. (282wards) Lesson 42 Modern cavemen Key to Composition A possible answer Plan and ideas for composition ( a ) Title: Caught in a cave Introduction: Went out for day on beach — walked round headland — found deserted beach —marvellous day swimming, sunbathing, reading — late afternoon began to pack up Development: Took time — began to walk to headland — suddenly realized — tide coming in fast — walked faster — tide reached head-land rocks

Dan wondered why he was wanted by the police… 能够判断d. he didn’t know why the police wanted him 是感到焦虑的真正原因,所以应该选d. Dan was most surprised… he never expected the bicycle to be found 能够判断,只有a. had probably forgotten all about his bicycle(可能把他的自行车早忘得一干二净了)符合当时的心情,是准确答案。 (a)even 不符合题意,应该同比较级连用才准 确;(b)still 能够用在肯定句中表示仍然,还,所以只能选(b)still 4. c a. had been finding 和 d. have been finding 都不是准确的 时态,动词find(找到)强调结果,不应该用实行时态; b. had been found语态不对,因为本句的主语是人,是动作的执行者,故不能用被动语态; c. had found最合乎时态和语态,所以只能选c 5. a

本句是对地点提问的疑问句,回答是In a small village,只有a. 8. b a. topical(话题的), b. local(地方的,当地的), c. native(出生地的,本地的,本国的),d. neighbourly(友好的,睦邻的)。 a. at 后面应该跟地点,而不应该跟人;b. in 不是准确表达方式;选d. up 之后表示“给…… The bicycle was picked up four hundred miles away(自行车是在400英里外发现的)意思相符。 Picked up (发现,拾到)同found意思最接近;而a. picked(挑选,

First listen and then answer the following question. At what point does the training of a captive wild elephant begin? Two main techniques have been used for training elephants, which we may call respectively the tough and the gentle. The former method simply consists of setting an elephant to work and beating him until he does what is expected of him. Apart from any moral considerations this is a stupid method of training, for it produces a resentful animal who at a later stage may well turn man-killer. The gentle method requires more patience in the early stages, but produces a cheerful, good-tempered elephant who will give many years of loyal service. The first essential in elephant training is to assign to the animal a single mahout who will be entirely responsible for the job. Elephants like to have one master just as dogs do, and are capable of a considerable degree of personal affection. There are even stories of half-trained elephant calves who have refused to feed and pined to death when by some unavoidable circumstance they have been deprived of their own trainer. Such extreme cases must probably be taken with a grain of salt, but they do underline the general principle that the relationship between elephant and mahout is the key to successful training. The most economical age to capture an elephant for training is between fifteen and twenty years, for it is then almost ready to undertake heavy work and can begin to earn its keep straight away. But animals of this age do not easily become subservient to man, and a very firm hand must be employed in the early stages. The captive elephant, still roped to a tree, plunges and screams every time a man approaches, and for several days will probably refuse all food through anger and fear. Sometimes a tame elephant is tethered nearby to give the wild one confidence, and in most cases the captive gradually quietens down and begins to accept its food. The next stage is to get the elephant to the training establishment, a ticklish business which is achieved with the aid of two tame elephants roped to the captive on either side. When several elephants are being trained at one time, it is customary for the new arrival to be placed between the stalls of two captives whose training is already well advanced. It is then left completely undisturbed with plenty of food and water so that it can absorb the atmosphere of its new home and see that nothing particularly alarming is happening to its companions. When it is eating normally, its own training begins. The trainer stands in front of the elephant holding a long stick with a sharp metal point. Two
