I was wandering around the Albuquerque International Support airport. My flight had been delayed and I heard an announcement: “If anyone near Gate A-4 understands Arabic(阿拉伯语), please come to the gate immediately.” Gate A-4 was my own gate. I went there. An older woman was crumpled(蜷缩成一团的)on the floor, crying loud. In her traditional Palestinian dress, she reminded me of my grandmother.

“Talk to her,” urged the flight agent. “We told her the flight was going to be late, and she did this.”I bent over to put my arm around the woman and spoke uncertainly. “Shu-dow-a, shu-bid-uck, habibti? Stanischway, min fadlick, shu-bit-se-wee?” She stopped crying. She thought the flight had been called off. She needed to be in El Paso for a medical treatment the next day. I said, “You’ll get there, just late. Who is picking you up? Let’s call him.”

We called her son. In English, I told him that I would stay with his mother until we got on the plane. She talked with him. Then we called her other sons just for fun. Then we called my dad and they spoke for a while in Arabic and found out that they had several shared friends. After that, I called some Palestinian poets I knew and let them chat with her.

She was, laughing a lot but then, patting my knee and answering questions. She pulled a bag of homemade cookies filled with dates and nuts and topped with sugar from her bag and offered them to the people at the gate. To my amazement, no one declined. It was like a sacrament(圣餐). The traveler from Argentina, the mom from California, the lovely woman from Laredo--We were all smiling, covered with the same sugar.

I looked around the gate and thought, “This is the world I want to live in, one with no anxiety. This can still happen anywhere”, I thought. Not everything is lost.

24. What can we learn about the author?

A. Her father was a relative of the older woman

B. She took the same flight with the older woman.

C. She was highly skilled in speaking Arabic.

D. Her grandmother saw her off at the airport.

C. She couldn’t make herself wholly understood.

D. Her flight ticket seemed to have got lost.

26. Which words can best describe the author?

A. Outstanding and generous.

B. Clever and brave.

C. Patient and creative.

D. Warm-hearted and thoughtful.

Japanese researchers made a botanical announcement on Monday that quickly circled the world. They had developed a banana with an eatable peel(皮)--the Mongee banana.

The technique used by scientists at D&T Farm is called“freeze thaw awakening”. The process involves starting banana trees out in an environment that’s nearly minus-80 degrees Fahrenheit, then moving the trees with their still-ripening bananas to a climate of around 80 degrees—an environment banana trees typically grow in the entire time. The extreme

temperature change puts the banana’s growth into a superfast-speed mode. In this case, the fruit ripens before the skin can catch up. The result is soft and thin skin that hasn’t fully developed.

The banana has been produced only in small amount so far, so customers face a steep bill to save themselves the bother of peeling their bananas; it is currently priced at 648 yen ($6) a piece. There’s also the question of whether a banana peel is actually worth eating and whether regular banana peels had, rather suddenly, become too big a problem for people who slip on them to bear anymore.

And what about shipping? For most of the fruit’s history, the peel has provided protection, allowing it to travel long distances from where it’s grown to nearly every country on Earth. A softer banana would be a step back from regular banana varieties that travel thousands of miles.

But the banana in the news is arguably good, particularly for a fruit that rarely receives its share of attention. Bananas are the most consumed fruit in Japan, and also in the U.S. So even if eatable-peel bananas don’t ensure plentiful banan as, or even necessarily nutritious bananas, they still look great on Instagram, which probably ensures them a future in Japan’s famous luxury (奢侈)fruit markets.

27. What do we know about “freeze thaw awakening in the second paragraph?”

A. It allows the banana skin to be as ripe as the fruit.

B. It leaves the banana skin thin and partially-developed.

C. It forces banana trees to grow more slowly than usual.

D. It provides an environment banana trees typically grow in.

28. What might be the major problem for the export of the Mongee banana?

A. Its weak market.

B. Its unreasonable price.

C. Its small amount.

D. Its inconvenient transport.

29. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. There is potential market for the Mongee banana.

B. Japanese have become fans of eatable-peel bananas.

C. The Mongee banana doesn’t receive enough attention

D. Eatable-peel bananas are healthier than regular ones.

30. What is the author’s attitude towards the eatable-peel bananas?

A. Positive.

B. Cautious

C. Doubtful.

D. Objective

Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday. They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels(血管)dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications.

“We have a pretty impressive effect,” said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology(心脏病学)at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

“Blood vessel diameter(直径)improved,” he said.“The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise.” A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins..

When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝块) that cause heart attacks and strokes. “We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health,” said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.

Miller’s team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music that made them feel anxious while the researchers did the tests designed to show blood vessel function.

Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked-- in most cases in this group --blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.

Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. “I asked myself what other things make us feel really good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. It makes me feel really good,” he said.

Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual.

31. What does t he underlined word “dilate” in paragraph 1 mean?

A. change

B. move

C. widen

D. increase

32. According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up?

A. Taking exercise.

B. Listening to unpleasant music.

C. Bursting into laughter.

D. Taking drugs like statins.

33. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokes.

B. Music is better than chocolate for your health.

C. The style of music has different effects on different people.

D. A person’s overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets.

34. What is the passage possibly taken out from?

A. A science fiction.

B. A school textbook.

C. A medical brochure.

D. A local newspaper.

35. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Pleasant Music Cures

B. Research into Blood Vessel

C. Music and Heart Attack

D. Music and Happiness

Dear friends,

In recent years, many of us spend a lo t of time on the Internet with its popularity. As a result, we don't write as well as we did in the past. In order to

protect our Chinese characters and improve our handwriting, we'd like to offer some suggestions:

We should spend less time online so that we can have more time to read books. We'd better form the habit if keeping diaries every day to practice handwriting. Besides, it is better to write letters to our relatives and friends by hand rather than sent e-mails. Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial to us students. So please pay more attention to our handwriting in the future.

Let's take action now!

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more

A summary of the teaching work of senior three English teache rs 汇报人:JinTai College

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska

2019级高三年级第一次英语周考(志强专用) 英语试卷 命题教师:焦国禄 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A How often do you let other people like a bad driver, a rude waiter, or an angry boss, change your mood? Sixteen years ago I learned a lesson. I got in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes, the tires made a loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car. I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting at us. I couldn’t believe it! My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.” So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take their garbage and spread it to other people. I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. 21. What happened to the author on his way to Grand Central Station? A. He was caught in a traffic jam. B. He had a fight with his taxi driver. C. His taxi almost ran into another car. D. His taxi suddenly got a flat tire. 22. When the author saw his taxi driver smile and wave at the driver of the black car, he_______.
