My hands were such good sports for so many decades that I didn’t even know they were unhappy until they quit working. In spite of my great effort, the chopsticks dropped to the floor and the coffee cup rolled down. When it sunk in that my life with easy hands was over, I fell into mourning(悲伤).

Every few years for decades, I painted new paintings on my bathroom walls. Looking at them, I was lost in thought. I was upset about ideas for new art projects.

I longed to create new paintings, but that would have required hands, so I didn’t. Eventually I’ve realized I still have hands, and clumsy as they are, they’re better than they’ll be tomorrow. The mourning broke.

If my childhood spent coloring was Act 1 of my life in art, this is Act 3. To compromise(妥协)with my aging body, I’ve had to acknowledge the balance of power has shifted. It’s my hands’turn to call the shots, not my will’s. When they were painless extensions of my brain, the decision to paint a line and the painting of that line were one and the same. Now, I load a brush with paint, and my hand applies it approximately where and how I intended it. Close enough.

It turns out there’s something to be said for a change in pace. Historically, I began projects and worked until they were done. Now I work only as long as my hands allow. When my hands insist that I stop, I have time to think about my next step. The pauses make for artistic decisions I wouldn’t have made otherwise.

The experience of creating in the third act is not the same, but it’s not all bad-and it’s better than it will ever be again.

24. Why did the author feel sad when looking at the paintings on her bathroom walls?

A. They reminded her of her childhood.

B. She wasn't able to create art as she wished.

C. She had no time to create new art projects.

D. They were not good enough in her opinion.

25. What made the author stop mourning?

A. Treasuring what she had.

B. Getting rid of her own past.

C. Looking to the bright future.

D. Recovering her work-life balance.

26. What is the main cause of the author’s worsening physical condition?

A. Sports injury.

B. Mental pressure.

C. The aging process.

D. Disease related to work.

27. What does the author most probably do?

A. She is an artist.

B. She is a teacher.

C. She is an athlete.

D. She is an architect.

C

As winter approaches, you probably don’t look forward to getting out of your warm, comfortable bed and into the cold air. But if you live in California, you are lucky! A new law, signed on Sunday by Gov. Gavin Newsom, will make sure that public high schools can no longer start earlier than 8:30 and public middle schools until 8.

The goal of this law is to improve attendance rates(出勤率)and prevent sleep deprivation. But is sleep deprivation such a big deal? What’s wrong with staying up a little later to finish homework, or waking up an hour earlier for school? Let’s take a look at why sleep deprivation is so serious.

Through a study by scientists at UCLA, we know that sleep deprivation slows the brain cells' ability to work and communicate with each other. Since brain cells help us concentrate and make decisions, our thinking skills dull(迟钝)when we're sleep-deprived. Sleep deprivation especially deserves our focus in teenagers, whose bodies are changing, and sleep-deprived adolescents are also more likely to develop mental and physical diseases. When surveyed, these tired teens reported being unhappy on a daily basis, stress-eating(leading to obesity), isolating themselves and suffering from anxiety and depression.

However, there is some discontent. When this law finally starts in full effect, roughly half the schools in California will have to move their schedules down by 30 minutes. Districts argue that schedule shifts prevent parents from dropping their kids off on their way to work. The kids would wake up early to walk instead, making the law useless. Teachers prefer that districts choose their own schedules as the schools know their students better.

It is possible that more states may adopt California’s measure. Until then,

there are other things you can do to sleep better. For example, set a specific bedtime so your body knows when it is time to rest. Make sure you only do quiet and calm activities before sleeping, like reading. And if you never have time to sleep a full eight to ten hours, try taking short naps.

28. What does the underlined word "deprivation" in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Getting something that you want.

B. Not expecting something you like.

C. Seeking something that you need.

D. Not having something that you need.

29. What does the study find about sleep?

A. Our brain must rely on sleep to function.

B. Sleep-deprived adults suffer most.

C. Our thinking can be affected for lack of sleep.

D. Lack of sleep may lead to eating less.

30. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A. The advantages schedule shifts will bring.

B. The proper arrangements for busy parents.

C. Different schedules for different districts.

D. The reasons why some people feel dissatisfied.

31. What’s suggested in the last paragraph?

A. Taking naps every day.

B. Sleeping as much as possible.

C. Avoiding being too active before sleep.

D. Carrying out California’s measure totally.

D

Which kind of diamond is better for the environment and the world we live in: a diamond from a traditional mine or one made in a laboratory? It seems that everyone would think that man-made diamonds would be better. But wait a minute. Don’t draw your conclusion so quickly.

Some recent reports suggest the answer may not be so clear. At the very least, these reports provide evidence of tensions between two different sectors of the diamond industry. Lab-grown diamond companies say they are more moral and cause less harm to the Earth’s environment as they don’t have to dig deep into the earth for

diamonds.

The traditional diamond sector notes that its businesses help the communities where they operate mines. It says they provide jobs, help build roads and other infrastructure and make investments in conservation. Some companies, such as De Beers, work on both sides. De Beers sells natural and man-made diamonds.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission(FTC)investigates reports of deceptive, or misleading, advertising. In April, the commission sent warning letters to eight lab-grown diamond companies. One of the FTC’s concerns was the use of the word "eco-friendly", and similar terms, to describe diamonds made in a laboratory. The lab-grown process requires very high temperatures and uses a lot of energy.

Trucost is a company that estimates the costs of using natural resources. Asked by the Diamond Producers Association to study the issue, Trucost found the carbon intensity of natural diamonds was lower than lab-grown diamonds. The Trucost report did note that diamond miners should reduce their effect on the environment by using more wind power and sunlight.

The Reuters news agency reported that the International Grown Diamond Association did not immediately respond to requests for comments about the story.

32. What’s the opinion of traditional diamond companies about their business?

A. They refuse lab-grown diamonds.

B. They bring benefits to local people.

C. They cause less harm to the Earth’s environment.

D. They are more moral than lab-grown diamond companies.

33. Why were lab-grown diamond companies warned by FTC?

A. They sold false diamonds.

B. They teased customers.

C. They took unfair competition.

D. They made false advertisements.

34. What did Trucost advise diamond miners to do?

A. Use renewable energy.

B. Give up mining diamonds.

C. Change mining equipment.

D. Develop lab-grown diamonds.

35. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Is Natural Diamond Mining Coming to an End?

B. Do Diamond Miners Really Protect the Environment?

C. Which Kind of Diamond Is Better for the Environment?

D. Why Are Lab-grown Diamonds Environmentally Friendly?

Tips for Keeping Awake in Class

If you want to keep awake during class, sleep the night before your class. Students who doze(打瞌睡)in class often missed sleep the night before. Getting enough sleep is your first line of defense when it comes to staying awake in class.

36 For most people, eight hours of sleep is enough to get through the day, but your body may require more.

37 This will train your body to know when it needs to be asleep and when it is time to wake up. Allow yourself time to relax before heading to bed by putting away your phone, homework, and other things that keep your mind active. Getting enough high-quality sleep can help you.

Another way is to take a shower before class. 38 The warm water from your shower raises your body temperature. This also increases your heart rate so your blood travels around your body faster. Finally, it helps deliver oxygen to your important organs so your body can work at the best level of efficiency.

39 When your body is exposed to cold water, your blood will flow at a higher pressure, meaning that your circulation(循环)is even further increased. The cold water will also help wake you up because it will shock your body, forcing you to breathe more deeply. 40 And thus you will be more mentally sharp.

A. Having a warm meal also works.

B. This will increase your oxygen intake.

C. Perform a series of movements before sleep.

D. This helps you feel refreshed and awakens your senses.

E. For some extra energy, finish your shower with cold water.

F. Make sure to get some shut-eye if you have a class the next day.

G. Keep a regular sleep schedule by going to bed at the same time each night.
