Nicola MacFarlane,41,and her daughter Lucy, four, from Portobello, near Edinburgh, were playing on the Portobello Beach when they came across an old glass bottle sticking out of the sand containing a note inside written in Chinese.

It is unclear when the letter was sent off,but it was written on Chinese Valentine's Day,or Qixi Festival as it is more traditionally known, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

Whether the message has travelled thousands of miles from China or whether it was penned by a love-struck pair much closer to home may remain a mystery. But for Nicola it doesn't matter—she is still excited to read about the Chinese love story after having it translated. She said,“I really do hope that it is from China but even if it is from someone nearer to home,it's still a lovely gesture and an inspiring find. It's a love story regardless of where it came from.”

“We saw the bottle sticking out of the sand and just thought it was junk that someone had left behind. But after picking it up I noticed there was a piece of brown paper rolled up inside and there was some foreign writing on it.We quite excitedly took it home, carefully opened the bottle and took out the sheet of paper using some tweezers (镊子).We knew it was Chinese, but we had no idea what it said.”

Unable to read the Chinese text,Nicola turned to the Internet and her Australian friend,Julie Gould, whose daughter attended a Chinese school in Sydney.Several hours later Julie returned with the news that it was in fact a love letter.

Nicola said,“It sounds to me like the couple are in love but cannot be together so they have sent the message to tell the world of their love.I'm blown__away by it to be honest—it's incredible that it has travelled all this way.”

June 8 is World Oceans Day,which the United Nations set to protect oceans.About 80 percent of life on Earth depends on oceans and coasts, and more than a third of humans live in coastal areas or on small islands.Oceans provide mankind with more than$21 trillion every year in goods and services, including food, energy, transportation and fun.

But oceans are increasingly under threat from pollution, overfishing, destruction of habitats, and the effects of increased CO2.Here are some tips to preserve the oceans for future generations.

________Overfishing affects the majority of the world's fisheries. So choose sustainable(可持续的)seafood at a store or a restaurant.

Choose environmentally friendly household cleaners

Besides being better for your own health, these products are safer for the environment since what goes down the drain can end up in our oceans.

Do background research before going on a beach-holiday

Before you stay in a hotel on the coast, ask staff what happens to

their waste water and swimming pool water, and if they get their restaurant fish from sustainable sources.

Keep your beach visit clean

When visiting the beach, take your trash with you and leave plants, birds and wildlife alone so everyone can enjoy them.

Scientists may have evidence that our personality plays into our eating habits.People who are open and extroverted(外向的) eat more fruits and vegetables than others, according to a new research.

The new report, published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, analyzed the eating habits of more than 1,000 young adults aging from 17 to 25.Researchers gave participants a test to measure for the “Big Five” personalities:openness to experience, conscientiousness (尽责性),extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism(神经质).Then they asked some participants to keep a food diary for 21 days and others for 13 days,in hopes of encouraging more people to complete the task.

Participants who scored higher than average for openness ate about 4.5 more servings of combined fruits and vegetables per week than those less open ones. They also consumed less unhealthy food, such as potato chips or fries.Extroversion also had a positive effect on fruits and vegetable consumption, though not as strongly as openness did, while conscientiousness was a weak predictor of produce consumption.

Of course, the study only found an association between the characteristic and eating habits, rather than a direct causation. It's likely that people who are open to new experiences take those same attitudes toward food, study author Tamlin Conner,a professor at the University of Otago, told The Huffington Post.Their personality may make them more eager to try new fruits and vegetables. But it's also possible that eating healthy foods can cause anyone to feel more like an extrovert:Another of Conner's studies found that in the short term, eating more fruits and vegetables resulted in more feelings of motivation, which she says are key characteristics of extroversion.

So,you want to eat better?Start eating like an open, extroverted

person.“Try to take an attitude of openness, especially toward unusual healthy foods,”Conner said.“Go to the store, and pick something new.Practice behaving like an open person.”

But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time. Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The van Gogh Year” in his honor. 人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.
