0 For most people, life is easier and more comfortable than ever before. Convenience foods from the supermarket simplify shopping and cooking. Household appliances like the vacuum cleaner and the washing machine have taken the drudgery out of housework. Released from these household chores, many wives have found jobs outside the home. Women are achieving economic independence.

Families, too, are simpler today. In America, it is not customary for parents to live with their married children. With our greater mobility, relatives have scattered, the parents retiring to Florida or Arizona and the young people, after they marry, going wherever their jobs or their parents or their interests take them.

Young adult women have new freedom, too. While attending college, they live away from home, sometimes far from their parents or their relatives. After college, they move to the city, find a job, and set up a 'bachelor' apartment. This is the era of women's liberation.

But all this freedom and affluence(富裕) have had an unforeseen and in some respects a devastating(破坏的)effect on marriage.

5 Why play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules...planning your next move...acting as a team member...these are all "game" ideas that you will come across throughout your life.

Think about some off the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games arc entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating (合

作) .

Many children's games have a practical side Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. Which sharpens the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.

10 There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was locking at it for the first time. The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug . I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car. I looked forward to the return journey.

15 "A survey was conducted in Shanghai where interviewees were asked if they wanted to be a factory worker, One percent of all people interviewed said "YES," Wang Hongjun, a technician, said, raising his voice for dramatic effect. "But I can tell you, only a small part of that I percent are telling the truth."

I've met colorful people like Wang all over China. They are cynical (玩世不恭的) yet warmhearted, plain spoken but smart. And many of them are confined (局限于) to work in factories.

Wang is a top technician but also represents manual factory workers, who "are China's most important natural resource. Their energy is powering China's economic boom, and their muscle is turning the wheel of the world's factory.

But does their unskilled labor give their life meaning? At school, did they tell their friends: "When I grow up I want to work in a factory making socks?" Did you?

Factory work has always been a stepping-stone from farm life to the city and a modern life. It's been happening for centuries, but today, with our space-age technology, it's outdated .Earning 1,200 yuan ($169) per month working in a factory is better than that on a farm, but as Wang points out, it's not a dream career. There should be batter ways to earn your rice.

Many modern factories no longer have production line workers. Robots do the assembly (装配 ) .People just do the monitoring, hi this age of technology, in which China is now working smarter and riot just harder, why are people still standing in production lines?

But life is cheap in China. So why not continue to exploit the low-cost labor situation and keep the economy growing fast, some entrepreneurs may ask.

But have these businessmen ever labored in a factory?

16 How many people surveyed really like to be factory workers?

(A)One percent

(B)Only a small part

(C)Only a small part of that one percent

(D)The writer didn't mention it.

17 Which is NOT the writer's opinion of factory workers?

19 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

(A)Factory workers make contributions to China's economic boom.

(B)Working in a factory is better than that on a farm.

(C)Factory workers are satisfied with their living conditions.

(D)Some entrepreneurs exploited the low-cost labor situation.

20 The writer uses_____ to begin the passage.

(A)a lot of figures

(B)many examples

(C)some dialogue

(D)the result of a survey

20 In every school there is a "top" crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their example. Let's say the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters(运动衫). Pretty soon everybody is wearing bright red sweaters. There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that for some people bright red is rather unsuitable. The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at seventy miles an hour. Then the people who follow the example are endangering their very lives. They are like sheep being led to the slaughter(屠宰).

Now, it is likely that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. In fact, it is likely that at one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourseif by saying, "Gee, the crowd does it." Well, let the crowd do it, but don't do it yourself. Learn to say "No." Develop your own standards and your own judgments. If you know the crowd is planning something of which you disapprove, have the courage to bow out gracefully. You'll have the satisfaction of standing on your own two feet.

21 The main idea of this passage is that______.

(A)in every school there is a "top" crowd that sets pace

(B)it is a mistake to follow the "top" crowd blindly

(C)at one time or another you probably did something you know to be wrong (D)people who follow the "top" crowd are endangering their very lives

22 The author disapproves of wearing red sweaters if______.

(A)the crowd is wearing them

(B)you can't afford them

(C)you don't look good in red

(D)it is against school regulations

23 People who follow the "top" crowd blindly______.

(B)to feel sorry

(C)to make an excuse

(D)to feel ashamed

25 The author urges the reader to______. (A)follow the crowd

(B)take the advice of his elders (C)be independent

(D)do whatever he wants

[专升本类试卷]河北专接本英语(阅读理解)模拟试卷7 0 Long before recorded history, our ancestors were bathing for pleasure and health. The earliest records often mention the use of rivers for bathing. And the Hindus have believed for centuries that the Ganges River has the power to clean the soul, as well as the body. Several thousand years ago, the inhabitants of the island of Crete built baths with running water. The early Jews took ceremonial baths on certain occasions, making use of oils and ointments(油膏). The Jews also had a custom of bathing the feet of all strangers that came within their gates. This friendly custom is still practised in parts of Palestine. Swimming was popular among the Greeks of ancient time. By the third century before Christ, almost every Greek city of a certain size had at least one public bath. The wealthy classes had private baths and pools, some of which were beautifully decorated. Many of the public baths that the Romans built utilized natural mineral springs. Since most of these springs were naturally warm the Romans took advantage of this free hot water. By the time of the Roman Emperors, these baths were often housed in large, marble(大理石) buildings. The baths built by the Emperor Caracalla, in the center of Rome, covered about one square mile and could hold sixteen thousand people. 1 The earliest bathing place was probably_____. (A)the river (B)the Nile (C)the Ganges (D)the River Jordan 2 According to the passage, today, some parts of Palestine also have the custom of_____. (A)bathing in public baths (B)bathing for pleasure

The side of the moon toward the sun gets two degrees hotter than boiling water. The night side reaches 243 degrees below zero. In a lunar eclipse (月食) the earth's shadow falls on the moon. Then the moon's temperature may drop 300 degrees in a very short time. A temperature change like this cannot happen on the earth. Why does it happen on the moon? Astronomers know that the surface of the moon is dust. On the earth, rocks store heat from the sun. When the sun goes down, the rocks stay warm. But the dust of the moon cannot store heat. So when the moon gets dark, the heat escapes quickly. The moon gets very cold.
