FAREWELL TO VICE-PREFECT DU SETTING OUT FOR HIS OFFICIAL POST IN SHU By this wall that surrounds the three Qin districts,

Through a mist that makes five rivers one,

We bid each other a sad farewell,

We two officials going opposite ways……

And yet, while China holds our friendship,

And heaven remains our neighbourhood,

Why should you linger at the fork of the road,

Wiping your eyes like a heart-broken child?

Immortal at the Magpie Bridge

Clouds float like works of art;

Stars shoot with grief at heart.

Across the Milky Way the Cowherd meets the Maid,

When autumn’s Golden Wind embraces Dew of Jade,

All the love scenes on earth, however many, fade.

Their tender love flows like a stream;

This happy date seems but a dream.

Can they bear a separate homeward way?

If love between both sides can last for age,

Why need they stay together night and day?

Outside the railings chrysanthemums are sad And orchids are shedding tears of dew.

The silk curtains hang light and cool,

A pair of swallows flying off.

The bright moon knows not the sorrow

Of departure and solitude,

It’s slanting rays piercing the vermilion portals

Till dawn breaks.

Last night the west wind withered the emerald leaves.

Alone,I mounted the stairs

To look down the endless road.

I’m ready to send of letters and elegant notes.

But the rivers are wide, the mountains so hight,

I do not know where to locate you.

天姥连天向天横,势拔五岳掩赤城;

湖月照我影,送我至剡溪;

洞天石扇,訇然中开;

霓为衣兮风为马,云之君兮纷纷而来下;

TIANMU MOUNTAIN ASCENDED IN A DREAM

A seafaring visitor will talk about Japan,

Which waters and mists conceal beyond approach;

But Yueh people talk about Heavenly Mother Mountain, Still seen through its varying deeps of cloud.

In a straight line to heaven, its summit enters heaven, Tops the five Holy Peaks, and casts a shadow through China With the hundred-mile length of the Heavenly Terrace Range, Which, just at this point, begins turning southeast.

...My heart and my dreams are in Wu and Yueh

And they cross Mirror Lake all night in the moon.

And the moon lights my shadow

And me to Yan River --

With the hermitage of Xie still there

And the monkeys calling clearly over ripples of green water.

I wear his pegged boots

Up a ladder of blue cloud,

Sunny ocean half-way,

Holy cock-crow in space,

Myriad peaks and more valleys and nowhere a road.

Flowers lure me, rocks ease me. Day suddenly ends.

Bears, dragons, tempestuous on mountain and river, Startle the forest and make the heights tremble.

Clouds darken with darkness of rain,

Streams pale with pallor of mist.

The Gods of Thunder and Lightning

Shatter the whole range.

The stone gate breaks asunder

Venting in the pit of heaven,

An impenetrable shadow.

...But now the sun and moon illumine a gold and silver terrace, And, clad in rainbow garments, riding on the wind, Come the queens of all the clouds, descending one by one, With tigers for their lute-players and phoenixes for dancers.

Row upon row, like fields of hemp, range the fairy figures.

I move, my soul goes flying,

I wake with a long sigh,

My pillow and my matting

Are the lost clouds I was in.

...And this is the way it always is with human joy:

Ten thousand things run for ever like water toward the east.

And so I take my leave of you, not knowing for how long.

...But let me, on my green slope, raise a white deer

And ride to you, great mountain, when I have need of you.

Oh, how can I gravely bow and scrape to men of high rank and men of high office Who never will suffer being shown an honest-hearted face!

Jiang Cheng Zi

For ten years the living and the dead are both ignorant of each other.

Even though I refrain from thinking of you,

However I cannot forget you.

Your lonely tomb lies a thousand miles away,

Where can I pour my sorrows anyway?

Even if we meet again, you can hardly recognize me by the way,

For my face is fully covered with dust,

And my temples have as frost turned grey.

Last night I suddenly dreamed of returing to my native land.

I saw you sitting by the tiny window,

Dressing and making up with your white hand.

We looked at each other, unable to speak a word,

Only a thousand lines of tears rolled down our faces.

I presume you will lie in that heartbreaking place year after year,

In that small round covered with pines mere,

Under the moon bright and clear.

Do you not see the Yellow River come from the sky,

Rushing into the sea and ne'er come back?

Do you not see the mirror bright in chamber high Grieve o'er your snow-white hair that once was silken back?

When hopes are won, oh, drink your fill in high delight

And never leave your wine cup empty in moonlight!

Heaven has made us talents; we're not made in vain.

A thousand gold coins spent, more will turn up again.

Kill a cow, cook a sheep and let us merry be, And drink three hundred cupfuls of wine in high glee!

Dear friends of mine,

Cheer up, cheer up!

I invite you to wine.

Do not put down your cup!

I will sing you a song, please hear,

O hear! Lend me a willing ear!

What difference will rare and costly dishes make?

I want only to get drunk and ne'er to wake.

How many great men were forgotten through the ages?

Great drinkers are better known than sober sages.

The Prince of Poets* feasted in his palace at will, Drank wine at ten thousand coins a cask and laughed his fill.

A host should not complain of money he is short;

To drink together we'd sell things of any sort.

The fur coat worth a thousand coins of gold

And flower-dappled horse may both be sold To buy good wine that we may drown the woes age-old

I Left home when a mere stripling, and returned in old age.

My native accents remained unchanged, but my ear-lock had grown thin.

The children could not recognize me when they saw me.

They asked smilingly ,"From where did you come?"

It is indeed a pleasure to acquire knowledge and, as you go on acquiring, to

put into practise what you have acquired. A greater pleasure still it is when

friends of congenial minds come from afar to seek you because of your

attainments.

Tseng Tzu said: "Each day I examine myself in three ways: in doing things for others, have I been disloyal?

In my interactions with friends, have I been untrustworthy? Have not practiced what I have preached?"

Yu Tzu said: "In the actual practice of propriety, flexibility is important. This is what the ancient kings did so well— both the greater and the lesser used flexibility. Yet you should be aware: If you understand flexibility and use it, but don't structure yourself with propriety, things won't go well."

The Master said, At fifteen I set my heart upon learning. At thirty, I had planted my feet firm upon the ground .At forty, I no longer suffered from perplexities. At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. At sixty, I heard them with docile ear. At seventy, I could follow the dictates of my own heart; for what I desired no longer overstepped the boundaries of right.

The Master said, If the ruler himself is upright all will go well even though he does not give orders. But if he himself is not upright, even though he gives orders, they will not be obeyed.

He who by reanimating the Old can gain knowledge of the New is fit to be a teacher.

He who learns but does not think, is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.

The Master said ,Even when walking in a party of no more than three I can always be certain of learning from those I am with. There will be good qualities that I can select for imitation and bad ones that will teach me what requires correction in myself.

Confucius said, When you go out of your home, behave as you were meeting important guests; when you are using the common people’s labor, behave as if you were conducting a solemn sacrificial ceremony. Do not impose on others what you do not desire yourself. Bear no grudge against the state where you work; have no feeling of dissatisfaction when you stay at home.”

Confucius said“Wealth and high position are desired by all men, but if they are not gained in the right way, they should not be accepted. Poverty and low position are hated by all men, but if they cannot be rid if in the right way, they should not be given up.”

Confucius said“Being firm, resolute, simple and reticent is close to being humane.”

Confucius said“Only the humane can love others and hate others.”

The master said, clever talk and a pretentious manner are seldom found in the Good.

If, when all that is done, he has any energy to spare, then let him study the polite arts.

A man who treats his betters as betters, wears an air of respect, who into serving father and mother knows how to put his whole strength, who in the service of his prince will lay down his life, who in intercourse with friends is true to his word--others may say of him that he still lacks education, but i for my part should certainly call him an educated man.

If he finds he has made a mistake, then he must not be afraid of admitting the fact and amending his ways.

已。

A gentleman who never goes on eating till he is sated, who does not demand comfort in his home, who is diligent in business and cautious in speech, who associates with those that possess the Way and thereby corrects his own faults--such a one may indeed be said to have a taste for learning.

Poor without cadging, rich without swagger. Not bad but not better than “poor, yet delighting in the Way, rich, yet a student of ritual.

When proper respect towards the dead is shown at the End and continued after they are far away the moral force of a people has reached its highest point.

The good man does not grieve that other people do not recognize his merits. His only anxiety is lest he should fail to recognize theirs.

Govern the people by regulations, keep order among them by chastisements and they will flee from you and lose all self-respect. Govern them by moral force, keep order among them by ritual and they will keep their self-respect and come to you of their own accord.

When you know a thing, to recognize that you know it, and when you do not know a thing, to recognize that you do not know it. That is knowledge.

Hear much, but maintain silence as regards doubtful points and be cautious in speaking of the rest. Then you will seldom get into trouble. See much, but ignore what it is dangerous to have seen, and be cautious in acting upon the rest; then you will seldom gets into trouble about what he has said and seldom does anything that he afterwards wishes he had not done, will be sure incidentally to get his reward.

Gentlemen never compete. You will say that in archery they do so. But even then they bow and make way for one another when they are going up to the archery-ground, when they are coming down and at the subsequent drinking-bout. Thus even when competing, they still remain gentlemen.

High office filled by men of narrow views, ritual performed without reverence, the forms of mourning observed without grief—these are things I cannot bear to see.

Wealth and rank are what every man desires; but if they can only be retained to the detriment of the Way he professes, he must relinquish them. Poverty and obscurity are what every man detests; but if they can only be avoided to the detriment of the Way he professes, he must accept them.

While father and mother are alive, a good son does not wander far afield; or if he does so, goes only where he has said he was going.

People are similar by nature, but through habituation become quite different from each other."

Abstract: It’s a good way to develop Chinese traditional culture by translating Chinese ancient poems into English. How to fill in the gap between the two totally different cultures is the problem that the translators should solve now.

On Military SituationSun WUSun Zi says: To manage a large army is the same in principle as to manage a small one. Itis a matter of organization. To direct a large army in war is the same in principle as to direct asmall one. It is a matter of unified command and order. The whole army may suffer from anall-out attack from the enemy but does not sustain a defeat. This is because extraordinaryand ordinary forces are skillfully operated. The army may deal the enemy a heavy blow as agrindstone crushes an egg. This is an example of beating the weak with the strong. It is a general rule in war that the ordinary force is used to engage and the extraordinaryforce to win victory. The warcrafts of a commander skilled in using extraordinary force to winvictory are as inexhaustible as boundless heaven and earth or as endless as flow of runningrivers. Although they have come to an end, they can start again like the motion of the sun andthe moon. Although they have died away, they can be reborn like the changing of the fourseasons of a year.

How long will the full moon appear? Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky。 I do not know what time of the year ‘Would be tonight in the palace on high。 Riding the wind, there I would fly, Yet I‘m afraid the crystalline palace would be Too high and cold for me。 I rise and dance, with my shadow I play。 On high as on earth, would it be as gay? The moon goes round the mansions red Through gauze-draped window soft to shed Her light upon the sleepless bed。 Why then when people part, is the oft full and bright? Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again; The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane。 There has been nothing perfect since the olden days。 So let us wish that man Will live long as he can! Though miles apart, we‘ll share the beauty she displays。 How rare the moon, so round and clear! With cup in hand, I ask of the blue sky, "I do not know in the celestial sphere What name this festive night goes by?" I want to fly home, riding the air, But fear the ethereal cold up there, The jade and crystal mansions are so high! Dancing to my shadow, I feel no longer the mortal tie。 She rounds the vermilion tower, Stoops to silk-pad doors, Shines on those who sleepless lie。 Why does she, bearing us no grudge, Shine upon our parting, reunion deny? But rare is perfect happiness-- The moon does wax, the moon does wane, And so men meet and say goodbye。 I only pray our life be long, And our souls together heavenward fly!
