Ford

1 Ford's great strength was the manufacturing process--not invention .Long before he started a car company ,he was a worker, known for picking up pieces of metal and wire and turning them into machines .He started putting cars together in 1 89 1, although it was by no means the first popular automobile ,the Model T showed the world just how creative Ford was at combining technology and market .

2 The company's assembly line alone threw America's Industrial Revolution into overdrive (高速运转).Instead of having workers put together the entire car, Ford's friends ,who were great toolmakers from Scotland ,organized teams that added parts to each Model T as it moved down a line .By the time Ford's Highland Park plant was humming(嗡嗡作响)along in 1914,the world's first automatic conveyor belt could turn out a car every 9

3 minutes .

3 The same year Henry Ford shocked the world with the $5-a day minimum

wage scheme, the greatest contribution he had ever made. The average Wage in the auto industry then was$2.34 for a 9-hour shift.Ford not only doubled that.he also took an hour off the workday. In those years it was unthinkable that a man could be paid that much for doing something that didn't involve an awful lot of training or education. The Wall Street Journal called the plan "an economic crime'.and critics everywhere laughed at Ford.

4 But as the wage increased later to daily$10,it proved a critical component of Ford's dream to make the automobile accessible(可及的)to a11 The critics were too stupid to understand that because Ford had lowered his costs per car,the higher wages didn't matter--except for making it possible for more people to buy cars.

第4部分:阅读理解(第31~45题,每题3分,共45分)

第一篇 Sleepless at Night

It was a normal summer night .Humidity(湿气)hung in the thick air .

I couldn't go to sleep ,partly because of my cold and partly because of my expectations for the next day .My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a surprise .

Sweat stuck to my aching body .Finally, gathered enough strength to sit up .I looked out of my small window into the night .There was a big bright moon hanging in the sky, giving off a magic light .

I couldn't stand the pressure anymore ,SO I did what I always do to make myself feel better .I went to the bathroom and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste .I cleaned my teeth as if there was no tomorrow .Back and forth ,up and down .

Then I walked downstairs to look for some signs of movement ,some life .Gladiator, my cat, frightened me as he meowed(喵喵地唱出)his sad song .He was on the old orange couch(长沙发),sitting up on his front legs ,waiting for something to happen .He looked at me as if to say "I'm lonely, pet me .I need a good hug(紧抱)."Even the couch begged me to sit on it . In one movement I settled down onto the soft couch .This couch represented my parents' marriage ,my birth ,and hundreds of other little events . As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily .My mind was flooded with questions :What's life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator's body ,I had a new thought ;each touch sang a different song .

I forgot all about the heat and the next day's surprise .The atmosphere was SO full of warmth and silence that I sank into its alms .Falling asleep

with the big cat in my arms,I felt all my worries slowly move away.

第二篇 Teaching poetry

No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read

aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation ” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting(背诵) it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing ” it, if there isn ’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “ a criticism of life ”, and “ a heightening(提升) of life ”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling ”, and it “ can save your life ”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don ’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few thing s about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it. 36 To have a better understanding of a poem, one should

A discuss it with others.

B analyze it by oneself.

C copy it down in a notebook

D practise reading it aloud

37 Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?

A Extending your life.

B Saving your life.

C Criticizing life.

D Heightening life.

38 According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students

A to understand life.

B to enjoy poetry.

C to become teachers.

D to become poets

39 What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply?

A More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.

B Poetry is more important than any other subject.

C One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry

D Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses

40 The phrase “make room” in the last paragraph could be best replaced by

A “build a booth”

B “provide equipment”.

C “leave a certain amount of time”.

D “set aside enough space”

第三篇 Technology Transfer in Germany

When it comes to translating basic research into industrial success, few nations can match Germany.Since the 1940s,the nation's vast industrial base has been fed with a constant stream of new ideas and expertise from science. And though German prosperity(繁荣)has faltered(衰退)over the past decade because of the huge cost of unifying east and west as well as the global economic decline,it still has an enviable(令人羡慕的)record for turning ideas into profit.

精品文档

。 9欢迎下载

Much of the reason for that success is the Fraunhofer Society, a network of research institutes that exists solely to solve industrial problems and create sought-after technologies · But today the Fraunhofer institutes have competition .Universities are taking an ever larger role in technology transfer ,and technology parks are springing up all over .These efforts are being complemented by the federal programs for pumping money into start-up companies.

Such a strategy may sound like a recipe for economic success ,but it is not without its critics. These people worry that favoring applied research will mean neglecting basic science ,eventually starving industry of flesh ideas .If every scientist starts thinking like an entrepreneur(企业家),the argument goes ,then the traditional principles of university research being curiosity .driven :free and widely available will suffer .Others claim that many of the programs to promote technology transfer are a waste of money because half the small businesses that are promoted are bound to go bankrupt within a few years.

While this debate continues ,new ideas flow at a steady rate from Germany's research networks ,which bear famous names such as Helmholtz ,Max Planck and Leibniz .Yet it is the fourth network ,the Fraunhofer Society ,that plays the greatest role in technology transfer .

Founded in 1949, the Fraunhofer Society is now Europe's largest organization for applied technology ,and has 59 institutes employing 1 2,000 people .It continues to grow .Last year' it swallowed up the Heinrich Hertz Institute for Communication Technology in Berlin .Today, there are even Fraunhofers in the US and Asia .

41 What factor Can be attributed to German prosperity?

A Technology transfer .

B Good management .

C Hard work.

D Fierce competition.

42 Which of the following is NOT true of traditional university research?

A It is free.

B It is profit-driven.

C It is widely available.

D It is curiosity-driven.

A Asia.

B USA.

C Europe.

D Africa.
