American women experience a great variety of lifestyle. A typical American woman may be single. She may also be divorced or married. She may be a homemaker, a doctor, or a factory worker. It is very difficult to generalize about American women. However, one thing that many American women have in common is their attitudes about themselves and their roles in American life.

Historically, American women have always been very independent. The first settlers to come to New England were ten young couples that had left behind their extended families. The women were alone in a new, undeveloped country with their husbands. This has two important effects. First of all, this was the uncivilized environment that demanded every person to share in developing it and in survival.

Women worked with their husbands and children to make themselves accepted in this new land. Second, because they were in a new land without the established influence of older members of society, women felt free to step into nontraditional roles.

This role of women was strengthened in later years as Americans move west again, leaving families behind and meeting a new environment. Even later, in the east, as new settlers arrived, women often found jobs more easily than men. Women became the supporters of the family.

Within the established lifestyle of the industrialized twentieth century, the strong role of women was not attractive as in the early days of the country. Some

women stepped into the men’s jobs as factory and business workers. After the war, some women stayed in these positions, and others left their jobs with a new sense of ability.

The average person learns most of the 30,000 ~ 40,000 words whose meaning he or she recognizes by hearing them or getting familiar with them in the context or simply absorbing them without conscious effort. The best way to build a good vocabulary, therefore, is to read a great deal and to participate in a lot of good talks. There are relatively few words that we learn permanently by purposefully referring to dictionaries or keeping word lists. However, even those extra few are of value, and no one will make a mistake by working on developing a larger vocabulary. Here are some suggestions of how to do it.

Read plenty of good books. When you come across a new word, or a new meaning of an old word, stop and see if you can understand it from its context. If you can’t, and if you can manage without interrupting the thought of the book too much, look it up in a dictionary or ask somebody and then repeat its meaning to yourself a couple of times. If you are really conscientious, write the word and its meaning in a

personal vocabulary list - preferably using it in a sentence, or you can keep a special vocabulary notebook. Go over the list from time to time. Further, try to use a new word in writing or conversation a few times over the next several days.

Listen to good talks and be alert to new words you hear or to new meanings of words you already know. Then treat them just as you do the new words you read.

Learn and be alert to the parts of words: prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing them enables you to make intelligent guesses about the meaning of words.

If you are studying a foreign language, be alert to words in that language which relate to words in English. English has inherited or borrowed much of its vocabulary of 500,000 ~ 600,000 words from Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and German. 66.When you meet a new word in reading, what should you do?

A.Guess its meaning. B.Ask somebody.

C.Look it up in a dictionary. D.All of the above.

67.According to this passage, the best way to build a good vocabulary is .

A.to remember a lot B.to read a great deal C.to take part in a lot of good talks D.Both B and C 68.The phrase “be alert to” in the third paragraph may best be replaced by “”.

A.look at B.pay attention to C.write down D.learn by heart

69.In the fourth paragraph, the word “them” refers to .

A.the parts of words B.prefixes

C.suffixes D.roots

70.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.We learn most of our vocabulary without conscious effort.

B.Keeping a personal vocabulary list is a good way to enlarge one’s vocabulary.

C.Listening to people talking is of little help to one’s vocabulary building.

D.All the suggestions given also apply to foreign language study.

D

Short people, studies have shown , are more likely to have a stroke , suffer from high blood pressures and heart disease and be bullied in school .

Now, researchers report that short people—at least in the past—were also more likely to die at a younger age than their taller peers .

Their study , published in the Journal of Epidemiology (流行病学) and Community Health , found that short bones have something to do with short life for more than 1,000 years . The conclusion was based on 490 sets of adult skeletal remains from an archaeological site in northeastern England , YC dating from the 9th century to about 1850 .

About 55% of men and 73% of women died before the age of 45, and 39% of men and 56% of women died before age 30. The risk of death before age 30 declined as bone length increased .

“This study provides evidence from an archaeological sample that long bone length is connected with age at death-those with smaller bones tend to die younger,”according to Dr. D.J. Gunnell of the university of Bristol in the UK and colleagues .

While it is not clear why short stature might be linked to earlier death , the researchers point out that height is an indicator of childhood nutrition, which may have long-lasting effect on health .

“Mechanism (身体结构) for height-mortality associations in the past may differ from those today , for example , short stature may have increased the risk of death in childbirth and this may explain the higher risk of premature mortality in women,”Gunnell and colleagues write .

“However , short bones , it would appear , have always been a marker of a short life,” the authors conclude .

71.The title of the passage should be .

A.Short people and their taller peers B.Short stature and short life

C.Men and women D.Long life and short life

72.“An indicator” in Paragraph 6 means .

A.a study B.a risk C.a marker D.an age

73.Which of the following statements is Not true according to the passage ?

A.Most people were more likely to die at the age of 30 in the past .

Open Your Eyes And Let's See Who You Are

Inventors have developed a new way to identify people, using a machine that scans their eyeballs.Developed by eyes scan, this new technology takes advantage of the fact that the iris (虹膜)of each person's eye is unique, and remains unchanged throughout a lifetime.

The process will replace _________called retina (视网膜) identification, which compared the pattern of veins (静脉) in the back of the eye.Used to control access to nuclear weapons, retina identification has never caught on with the public because it requires the user to put their eyeball right up against a lens.Iris scanning, on the other hand, works from a distance.

The iris of the eye is photographed from up to one meter away. The patterns of the iris are translated into digital code, and stored in a PC database, along with personal information.Glasses and contact lenses do not interfere with the scanning process, and it takes only a brief moment.

The new technology will be useful for banking and police work, as well as for

the Internet economy. Before long, your computer monitor may be equipped with an iris scanner that can identify you when you shop online, thus preventing fraud.

There will be no ID cards to carry in your pocket, and no long numbers to memorize. And eyes will be very difficult to counterfeit.

Did you lose your ID card? No, you didn't.It's still right up there beside your nose.
