41.
Today ,as in every other day of the year ,more than 3000 U.S. adolescents(青年人) will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attrib

uted to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death.
Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percents, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive(印象深刻的), several important issues must be raised.
First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third ,several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent .
Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.

42.Can animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings.
They point put that at a circus, for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them.

Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modern times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russian, for example, pigeons, which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak. This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to this and one pigeon can inspect 3,000 to 4,000 balls an hour.
Apes have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys may be one day gather crops and even drive trains.

43.I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eight grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed.

As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she mentioned how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as though I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed strange to her that I hadn’t mentioned anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. 44. Lincoln was a strong executive who saved the government, saved the United States. He was a president who understood people, and, when time came to make decisions, he was willing to take the responsibility and make those decisions, no matter how difficult they were. He knew how to treat people and how to make a decision, and that’s why he is regarded as such a great administration.
Carl Sandburg and a lot of others have tried to make something out of Lincoln that he wasn’t. He was a decent man, a good politician, and a great President, and they’ve tried to build up things that he never e

ven thought about. I’ll bet a dollar and a half if you read Sandburg’s biography of Lincoln, you’ll find things put into Lincoln’s mouth and mind that never even occurred to him. He was a good man who was in the place where he ought to have been at the time important events were taking place, but when they write about him as though he belongs in the pantheon ( 众神庙 ) of the gods, that’s not the man he really was . He was the best kind of ordinary man, and when I say that he was an ordinary man, I mean that as high praise, not deprecation. That’s the highest praise you can give a man. He was one of the people and becomes distinguished in the service that he gives other people. He was one of the people, and he wanted to stay that way. And he was that way until the day he died. One of the reasons he was assassinated was because he didn’t feel important enough to have the proper guards around him at Ford’s Theatre.

Modern zoos are very different from zoos that were built fifty years 1 . At that time, zoos were places 2 people could go to see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages that were made 3 concrete with iron bars, cages that were easy to keep clean.

4 for the animals, the cages were small and impossible to hide in. The zoo environment was 5 natural. 6 the zoo keepers took good care of the animals and fed them well, many of the animals did not thrive; they behaved in strange ways, and they often became ill.

In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural habitats. The animals are given more 7 in large areas so that they can live more 8 as they would in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. Trees and

57.Why I Like Learning English

First I got in touch with English I didn’t think this cour

se was fixed to me, but I thought it’s very intersting.
Because of a traffic accident, I had to stay in the hospital for months, and I failed. But I knew it’s very important, I must try my best to learn it well, because I think it’s a key for me to go to senior school. Reality always against the dreams. I couuldn’t be a top student in English.
Coming into the senior school, my English achievement also not very good, even a little bad, staying up and down 60 scores. I felt very sad, and I didn’t satisfied with it, and I didn’t lost my confidence. But I didn’t know how to do. In the college entrance examination, my mark was only 86, and the full mark was 150, I failed.
The next year, I spent more time on this course, practised listening, writing , reading, etc. I got up at half past five every morning, I rode to school to read the book, also listened the english tape recorder at 6:00 p.m every day. Behind my seat, was two beautiful girls, they always helped me to improve my English were very well, they encouraged me, helped me to solve the English question. With the time flying, I found I had loved to study English, and my English achievement went rised day by day. In the college entrance examination, I felt a bit surprised on my mark.
Entering the college I was surprised that I was a top student in English in my class, I felt self-confident, and I answered the question the teacher asked very actively. I attended the English corner to practice my oral English so that I can talk with the teacher in class fluently, I have passed the CET-3, and now, I want to passed CET-4, next I dreamed I can pass CET-6, maybe it’s enough for me in college study!
