When did you last see a polar bear(北极熊)?On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If y ou had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago,you would have se en a whole polar bear club. These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently i n the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day,the air temperature was 3℃,and the water temperature was a little higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island,New York are usually about the age of 60.Members must sat isfy two requirements.First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group;this is very important because there are so many different kinds of peopl

e in the club.Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a mon th from November through February.

Dcotors don't agree about the medical effects of cold-winter swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature dr ops so low that finally the heart stops.Other doctors, however, point out that th ere is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the differe nce between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water sw imming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circu latory system(循环系统)because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the bo dy warm.Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water.A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and s hould not try cold-water swimming.

The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bear s love to swim all year round;they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says,"When I go into water,I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

65.The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements except that_____.

A.Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water

B.cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high

C.you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blue

D.cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winter

67.The Polar Bears like to swim year-round,for_____.

A.it is an easy way ot keep the body warm in winter

B.they can remain young

C.they find it enjoyable and interesting

D.they might meet fewer troubles in life

Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life.Littl e children can learn to swim as soon as they walk.In fact, you need the same ski lls in walking as in swimming. However,I believe that five is the best age to l earn.By five or six,a child knows fear of water,a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid,to recognize true danger.Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.

To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn,as soon as possi ble, these four basic strokes;butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and crawl.I feel t hat one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.

In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:

1.Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drown ing by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends wi th you,you may get into trouble.

2.Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach,Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no goo d.

Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.

3.Don't smoke.Swimming depends on a healthy body;good lungs are part of it.

4.Work at any activity that builds muscles.

69.Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.

A.they can talk

B.they start walking

C.they have no fear of the water

D.they are five or six years old

70.The author believes that fear of water is_____.

A.stupid

B.sensible

C.dangerous

D.not smart

71.The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____.

A.Picture(1)

B.Picture(2)

C.Picture(3)

D.Picture(4)

72.According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____.

A.the water is too cold

B.your parents would not be happy

C.something in the water might attack

D.you might drown

高一英语阅读理解题20套(带答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say. "It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research. Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable. For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often". However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time. Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study. "This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said. (1)Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do? A.lying on the sofa reading. B.Doing a little gentle gardening. C.Going out to hike with friends. D.Playing basketball sometimes. (2)What can we know about the research? A.It lasted about 8 years. B.The researchers admitted they used fake data. C.The participants didn't include younger people. D.Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity (3)What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion? A.Doubtful

As he observed her and spoke with her, he admired her more and more. He showered her with kindness and words of praise until she consented to be his wife. Not long after they were married, however, the beautiful woman found out that she was more the object of his artistic interest than of his affections. When he admired her classic beauty, it was as though he were standing in front of a work of art rather than in front of a human being to whom he had pledged his love and promised his life. And soon he expressed his great desire to put her rare beauty on canvas. “Please sit for me in the workroom,” he pleaded, “and I will make your beauty permanent. The work will be my masterpiece!” She was humble and patient as well as flattered by his words, so she said, “Yes, my love. I will be happy to sit for you.” So the beautiful, young wife of the art ist sat meekly for hours in his studio, not complaining. Day after day she sat patiently, smiling as she posed, because she loved him and because she hoped that he would see her love in her smile and obedience. She sometimes wanted to call out to him, “Ple ase love me and want me as a person rather than as an object!” But instead, she spoke nothing but words which pleased him. At length, as the labor drew to close, the painter became wilder in his passion for his work. He only rarely turned his eyes from the canvas to look at his wife. As he stood there gazing at his beautiful work of art, he cried with a loud voice, “This is indeed life itself!” Then he turned to his beloved and saw that she was dead!
