What was the monster called?

Fishermen and sailors sometimes claim to have seen monsters in the sea. Though people have often laughed at stories told by seamen, it is now known that many of these 'monsters' which have at times been sighted are simply strange fish. Occasionally, unusual creatures are washed to the shore, but they are rarely caught out at sea. Some time ago, however, a peculiar fish was caught near Madagascar. A small fishing boat was carried miles out to sea by the powerful fish as it pulled on the line. Realizing that this was no ordinary fish, the fisherman made every effort not to damage it in any way. When it was eventually brought to shore, it was found to be over thirteen feet long. It had a head like a horse, big blue eyes, shining silver skin, and a bright red tail. The fish, which has since been sent to a museum where it is being examined by a scientist,

is called an oarfish. Such creatures have rarely been seen alive by man as they live at a depth of six hundred feet.

You will be very lucky if he lets you go without a ticket. However, this does not always happen. Traffic police are sometimes very polite. During a holiday in Sweden, I found this note on my car: 'sir, we welcome you to our city. This is a "No Parking" area. You will enjoy your stay here if you pay attention to our street signs. This note is only a reminder.' If you receive a request like this, you cannot fail to obey it! 【New words and expressions】(9) 1 park [pɑ:k] v. 公园(public garden) the Central Park (纽约的)中央公园 2) v. 停车stop and leave (a vehicle) in a place for a time eg. Finding fossil man 发现化?石?人 Why are legends handed down by storytellers useful? We can read of things that happened 5,000 years ago in the Near East, where people first learned to write. But there are some parts of the world where even now people cannot write. The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas -- legends handed down from one generation of storytellers to another. These legends are useful because they can tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could write down what they did. Anthropologists wondered where the remote ancestors of the Polynesian peoples now living in the Pacific Islands came from. The sagas of these people explain that some of them came from Indonesia about 2,000 years ago. But the first people who were like ourselves lived so long ago that even their sagas, if they had any, are forgotten. So archaeologists have neither history nor legends to help them to find out where the first 'modern men' came from. Fortunately, however, ancient men made tools of stone, especially flint, because this is easier to shape than other kinds. They may also have used wood and skins, but these have rotted away. Stone does not decay, and so the tools of long ago have remained when even the bones of the men who made them have disappeared without trace. 一trace back date back read of read about a trace of ?

He could hear shouting in the camp itself…they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped, 能够判断出只有d. The officers got out and the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed (军官们一定是把 俘虏当成了看守或卫兵),能够判断只有 a. a guard (卫兵)是准确的,而其他3个选择都不是课文所暗示的情形,所以应该选a. On having killed (当杀死…… ON having been killed(当…… 英语里表示“某处有什么”应该用there is 或there are . a. They had 和b. there had 都不合乎题目意思和语法规则;c.

【Text】 When he had killed the guard, the prisoner of war quickly dragged him into the bushes. Working rapidly in the darkness, he soon changed into the dead man's clothes. Now, dressed in a blue uniform and with a rifle over his shoulder, the prisoner marched boldly up and down in front of the camp. He could hear shouting in the camp itself. Lights were blazing and men were running here and there: they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped. At that moment, a large black car with four officers inside it, stopped at the camp gates. The officers got out and the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed. When they had gone, the driver of the car came towards him. The man obviously wanted to talk. He was rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes. The prisoner felt sorry for him, but there was nothing else he could do. As the man came near, the prisoner knocked him to the ground with a sharp blow. Then, jumping into the car, he drove off as quickly as he could. New words and expressions 生词和短语 【生词讲解】1.prisoner (1)n. 囚犯jailbird (2)n. POW:a prisoner of war 战俘eg:They were taken prisoner.

The modern city 现代城市 In the organization of industrial life the in?uence of the factory upon the physiological and mental state of the workers has been completely neglected. Modern industry is based on the conception of the maximum production at lowest cost, in order that an individual or a group of individuals may earn as much money as possible. It has expanded without any idea of the true nature of the human beings who run the machines, and without giving any consideration to the effects produced on the individuals and on their descendants by the arti?cial mode of existence imposed by the factory. The great cities have been built with no regard for us. The shape and dimensions of the skyscrapers depend entirely on the necessity of obtaining the maximum income per square foot of ground, and of offering to the tenants of?ces and apartments that please them. This caused the construction of gigantic buildings where too large masses of human beings are crowded together. Civilized men like such a way of living. While they enjoy the comfort and banal luxury of their dwelling, they do not realize that they are deprived of the necessities of life.

Lesson 48 Did you want to tell me something? Why did the writer become very worried? Dentists always ask questions when it is impossible for you to answer. My dentist had just pulled out one of my teeth and had told me to rest for a while. I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool. He knew I collected match boxes and asked me whether my collection was growing. He then asked me how my brother was and whether I liked my new job in London. In answer to these questions I either nodded or made strange noises. Meanwhile, my tongue was busy searching out the hole where the tooth had been. I suddenly felt very worried, but could not say anything. When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth. 一、New words and expressions 生词和短语 pull 1) v. I spent a whole day pulling weeds. pull out a nail 拔出钉子 pull out a stopper 拔出塞子 have the decayed tooth pulled out请(牙医)拔掉蛀牙 pull out the wrong tooth 拔错了牙 eg. 新概念英语第四册课堂笔记

新概念英语第四册课堂笔记 1 fossil man (化石人) Why are legends handed down by storytellers useful We can read of things that happened 5,000 years ago in the Near East, where people first learned to write. But there are some parts of the world where even now people cannot write. The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas -- legends handed down from one generation of story tellers to another. 【New words and expressions 生词和短语】 fossil man adj.

2. b 根据课文第6行…a peculiar fish was caught near Madagascar (在马达加斯加福建的海里捕到了一条奇怪的鱼)能够判断,只有b. an unusual fish 与课文中的内容一致,而其他3个选择都与课文的内容不符,所以选b. 只有a. that they have seen 是个从句,能够做claim 的宾语。 b. have seen 既不是从句,又不是不定式,因为前面没有to,所以不能用在claim 后面;c. to be seen 虽然是不定式,但不定 式的被动式不符合这个句子的要求;d. to being seen 不符合语法, 所以选a. a. which, b. which have 不合乎语法;c. which have being 也不合乎语法,只有选d. which have been 能构成被动语态关系从句,意思完整。 5. c
