Reading comprehension. Read the following passages and then choose the right answer to each question given below. Then write your choices down on the answer sheet.

Passage 1

A total of million digital televisions have been sold, and the sales of HDTV sets have quadrupled since last year. Consumers have bought HDTVs to play their DVDs and to have clearer pictures and wide screens. Only a small percentage of the people who have purchased HDTVs, however, have actually hooked their TVs

up to receive high-definition television digital signals. Perhaps television viewers are having trouble keeping up with the changes in technology. Even the manufacturers of HDTVs, like Mitsubishi, Thomson Multimedia, Sony, and Samsung seem to have a tough time learning how to make their sets work with the various digital TV formats because little standardization has been required or implemented in the industry.

Some of the HDTVs weigh over 200 lbs., and a variety of retailers offer a delivery service to the buyer’s home to help install the heavy sets. This is known as a white-glove service and usually comes with an extra fee. After HDTV purchasers get their sets home and hook them up, they will still need to work to get the digital signals to their systems. Most of the industry’s cable providers do not yet offer high-definition programming, and only about 15% of commercial television stations have switched over to even the lowest improved digital pictures. Worse yet, viewers may need to install antenna before they can even get the digital signals to their new HDTV sets. Another frustration for home-theater seekers is that the current HDTV sets allow owners only to watch high-definition programs, not to record them.

1.“Hook up”as in “hooked their TVs up”underlined in Paragraph 1 most

3.According to the passage, which of the following offers most of the HDTV

programs so far

A.Retailer delivery services.

B.Cable providers.

https://www.sodocs.net/doc/7a8323721.html,mercial television stations.

D.HDTV set manufacturers.

4.On the whole, this passage is positioned to talk about .

A.the overall picture of the HDTV sector

B.how the giant TV makers should offer better products

C. a lament over consumers’ inability to use a high-end TV set

D. a criticism of the TV makers for doing nothing about a big problem

Passage 2

William Sydney Porter (1861-1910), who wrote under the pseudonym of O. Henry, was born in North Carolina. His only formal education was to attend his Aunt Lina’s school until the age of fifteen, where he developed his lifelong love of books. By 1881 he was a licensed pharmacist. However, within a year, on the recommendation of a medical colleague of his Father’s, Porter moved to La Salle County in Texas for two years herding sheep. During this time, Webster’s unabridged Dictionary was his constant companion, and Porter gained a knowledge of ranch life that he later incorporated into way of his short stories. He then moved to Austin for three years, and during this time the first recorded use of his pseudonym appeared, allegedly derived from his habit of calling “Oh, Henry”to a family cat. In 1887, Porter married Athol Estes. He worked as a draftsman, then as a bank teller for the First National Bank.

In 1894, Porter founded his own humor weekly, the “Rolling Stone”, a venture that failed within a year, and later wrote a column for the Houston Daily Post. In the meantime, the First National Bank was examined, and the subsequent indictment of 1886 stated that Porter had embezzled funds. Porter then fled to New Orleans, and later to Honduras, leaving his wife and child in Austin. He returned in 1897 because of his wife’s continued ill-health; however she died six months later. Then, in 1898 Porter was found guilty and sentenced to five years imprisonment in Ohio. At the age of thirty five, he entered prison as a defeated man; he had lost his job, his home, his wife and finally his freedom. He emerged from prison three years later, reborn as O. Henry, the pseudonym now used to hide his true identity. He wrote at least twelve stories in jail, and after re-gaining his freedom, went to New York City, where he published more than 300 stories and gained fame as America’s favorite short story writer. Porter married again in 1907, but after months of poor health, he died in New York City at the age of forty-eight in 1910. O. Henry’s stories have been translated all over the world.

5.Why did the author write the passage

A.Because it is a tragic story of a gifted writer.

B.To outline the career of a famous American.

C.Because of his fame as America’s favorite short story writer.

D.To outline the influences on O. Henry’s writing.

6.According to the passage, Porter’s father was .

A.responsible for his move to La Salle County in Texas

B.the person who gave him a life-long love books

C. a medical doctor

D. a licensed pharmacist

7.The word “allegedly” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to .

A.supposedly

B.reportedly

C.wrongly

D.mistakenly

8.Which of the following is true according to the passage

A.Both of Porter’s wives died before he died.

B.Porter left school at 15 to become a pharmacist.

C.Porter wrote a column for the Houston Daily Post called “Rolling Stone”.

D.The first recorded use of his pseudonym was in Austin.

Passage 3

A strange thing about humans is their capacity for blind rage. Rage is presumably an emotion resulting from survival instinct, but the surprising thing about it is that we do not deploy it against other animals. If we encounter a dangerous wild animal - a poisonous snake or a wild cat - we do not fly into a temper. If we are unarmed, we show fear and attempt to back away; if we are suitably armed, we attack, but in a rational manner not in a rage. We reserve rage for our own species. It is hard to see any survival value in attacking one‘s own, but if we take account of the long competition, which must have existed between our own subspecies and others like Neanderthal man - indeed others still more remote from us than Neanderthal man- human rage becomes more comprehensible.

In our everyday language and behavior there are many reminders of those early struggles. We are always using the words “us and them”. “Our”side is perpetually trying to do down the “other”side. In games we artificially create other subspecies we can attack. The opposition of “us”and “them”is the touchstone of the two-party system of “democratic” politics. Although there are no very serious consequences to many of these modern psychological representations of the “us and them” emotion, it is as well to remember that the

original aim was not to beat the other subspecies in a game but to exterminate it.

The readiness with which humans allow themselves to be regimented has permitted large armies to be formed, which, taken together with the “us and them” blind rage, has led to destructive clashes within our subspecies itself. The First World War is an example in which Europe divided itself into two imaginary subspecies. And there is a similar extermination battle now in Northern Ireland. The idea that there is a religious basis for this clash is illusory, for not even the Pope has been able to control it. The clash is much more primitive than the Christian religion, much older in its emotional origin. The conflict in Ireland is unlikely to stop until a greater primitive fear is imposed from outside the community, or until the combatants become exhausted.

9. A suitable title for this passage would be __ __.

A.Why Human Armies Are Formed

B.Man’s Anger Against Rage

C.The Human Capacity for Rage

D.Early Struggles of Angry Man

10.According to the author, the surprising aspect of human anger is .

A.its lengthy and complex development

B. a conflict such as is now going on in Northern Ireland

C.that we do not fly into a temper more often

D.that we reserve anger for mankind

11. The passage suggests that .

A.historically, we have created an “us” versus “them” society

B.humans have had a natural disinclination toward formal grouping

C.the First World War is an example of how man has always avoided domination

D.the emotional origin of the war in Ireland is lost in time

12. The author believes that a religious explanation for the war in Northern Ireland is .

A.founded in historical fact

B.deceptive

C.apparent

D.probably accurate

Passage 4

Art, like words, is a form of communications. Words, spoken and written,

render accessible to humans of the latest generation all the knowledge discovered by the experience and reflection, both of preceding generations and of the best and foremost minds of their own times. Art renders accessible to people of the latest generations all the feelings experienced by their predecessors, and those already felt by their best and foremost contemporaries. Just as the evolution of knowledge proceeds by dislodging and replacing that which is mistaken, so too the evolution of feeling proceeds through art. Feelings less kind and less necessary for the well-being of humankind are replaced by others kinder and more essential to that end. This is the purpose of art, and the more art fulfills that purpose, the better the art; the less it fulfills it, the worse the art.

13. The author develops the passage primarily by .

A. theory and refutation

B. example and generalization

C. comparison and contrast

D. inference and deduction

14. According to the author, knowledge is .

A. evolutionary and emotional

B. cumulative and progressive

C. static and unmoving

D. dynamic and cyclical

15. According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT .

A. art is a form of communication

B. art also helps to refine sensibilities

C. art is a repository of experience

D. real art can never be bad

Part VI (10 points, 1 point for each)

NASA is about to launch a large satellite that will monitor the

health of Earth’s atmosphere in unprecedented detail, and keeping daily track of everything from the upper ozone layer, that guards against solar radiation, to the air near the ground that people breathe. The $785 million mission is to be launched Saturday from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. A Boeing Delta II rocket will send the 6,542-pound spacecraft into a 438-mile-high polar orbit. It is used to scanning the atmosphere for at least six years.

The craft, naming Aura, is the third and final addition to a series of major satellites making up NASA's Earth Observing System, an initial set of spacecraft that designed to study all of the processes that affect the Earth's climate and weather. Terra, which monitors land-based processes, was launched in 1999; Aqua, which observes the oceans and water cycle of Earth, sent up in 2002. These flagship spacecrafts, joined by more than a dozen of other satellites launched by the United States and several other nations, allow long-term studies of the factors that influence climate change, using many different instruments. The launching is fundamentally a mission to understand and protect the very air we breathe. In conjunction with the climate observatories, Aura should make a major contribution to determine the causes, extent and consequences of global change. The spacecraft carries four instruments that will survey the atmosphere from top to bottom, including monitoring ozone in its good and bad forms. In the upper atmosphere, ozone in the stratosphere provides a protective barrier for harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. In the troposphere, the atmospheric layer that goes from the ground up to about six miles, ozone produced by combustion is a major pollutant in smog.1. 2.

(阅读教材《高级英语阅读教程(下册)》第八课课文A,翻译以下句子) On my first day as an assistant professor of education at the University of Southern California, I entered the classroom with a great deal of anxiety. My large class responded to my awkward smile and brief greeting with silence. For a few moments I fussed with my notes. Then I started my lecture, stammering; no one seemed to be listening. II Read lesson 3 ,Text A “To the Victor Belongs the Language”, answer the following Questions (阅读教材第三课课文A ,回答问题): To the Victor Belongs the Language By Rita Mae Brown Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going. A study of the English language reveals a dramatic history and astonishing versatility. It is the language of survivors, of conquerors, of laughter. A word is more like a pendulum than a fixed entity. It can sweep by your ear and through its very sound suggest hidden meanings; preconscious associations. Listen to these words: "blood," "tranquil," "democracy.'' Besides their literal meanings, they carry associations that are cultural as well as personal. One word can illustrate this idea of meaning in flux: "revolution." The word enters English in the 14th century from Latin via French. (At least that's when it was first written; it may have been spoken earlier.) "Revolution" means a turning around; that was how it was used. Most often "revolution'' was applied to astronomy to describe a planet revolving in space. The word carried no political meaning. "Rebellion" was the loaded political word. It too comes from Latin (as does about 60 percent of our word pool), and it means a renewal of war. In the I4th century "rebellion" was used to indicate a resistance to lawful authority. This can yield amusing results. Whichever side won called the losers rebels—they, the winners, being the repositories of virtue and
