A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Scripts:

Aside:There was a law in the city of Athens which gave to its citizens the power of forcing their daughters to marry whomever they pleased. For if a daughter refused to marry the man her father had chosen to be her husband, the father might by thus law cause her to be put to death.

ACT I. SCENE I

Athens. The corrider.

HERMIA: Father, please, please don’t do that.

Egeus: I’m sorry ,HERMIA, you have to marry Demetrious, the eligible young man in the city.

HERMIA: I can’t, Father! I can’t be his wife. Egeus: Why do you refused to marry Demetrius? He is really a worthy gentleman!

HERMIA: But I don’t love him. I've fell in love with Lysander.

Egeus: Lysander? Is he better than Demetrious? No!

HERMIA: Oh! Father! Demetrious had ever said that he love my friend, Helena, and she, a sweet lady also love him deeply.

Egeus: No matter what you say, I've decided to let you marry Demetrious. I stick to do this!

HERMIA: I won’t give my heart to the person who I never like.

Egeus: If you don't marry Demetrious, I'll use the ancient right of Athens, asking to put you to death according to our law!

HERMIA: Oh! Please, please do not! My dear father! Don’t you love me any more? Don’t give me up, please!

Lysander: Sweet HERMIA, my love! What’s going wrong? Let me wipe your heart-breaking tears!

HERMIA: My father said that unless I marry Demetrious, or he’ll be put me to death!

Lysander: My love…

Hermia,

Hermia:NO…Hermia

LYSANDER. Ay me! For aught that I could ever read, Could ever hear by

tale or history, The course of

true love never did run smooth;

But either it was different in

blood-

HERMIA. O cross! Too high to be

enthrall’d to low.

LYSANDER. Or else misgraffed in respect

of years-

HERMIA. O spite! Too old to be engag’d

to young.

LYSANDER. Or else it stood upon the

choice of friends-

HERMIA. O hell! To choose love by another’s eyes.

LYSANDER. Or, if there were a sympathy

in choice, War, death, or

sickness, did lay siege to it,

Making it momentary as a

sound,Swift as a shadow,

short as any dream, Brief as

the lightning in the collied

night,That, in a spleen,

unfolds both heaven and

earth, And ere a man hath

power to say ‘Behold!’The

jaws of darkness do devour it

up; So quick bright things

come to confusion.

HERMIA. If then true lovers have ever

cross’d, It stands as an edict

in destiny. Then let us teach

our trial patience, Because

it is a customary cross, As

due to love as thoughts and

dreams and sighs, Wishes and

tears, poor Fancy’s

followers.

Lysander: You are right, my love. Therefore, hear me, HERMIA. Tomorrow night, I’ll wait for you in the wood a few miles outside the city. If you really love me, gets far away this sad city with me.

HERMIA: I will because I love you so.

Lysander: Keep promise, love. Here comes Helena and I have to go. See you tomorrow night!

HERMIA: I’m so glad to see you, fair Helena. Helena: You call me fair? That fair again unsay. Demetrious loves your fair. Oh, tech me how to attract his eyes, please?

HERMIA: Take comfort, he no more shall see my face. (激动的说)Tomorrow night Lysander and myself will fly this place. We’ll meet in the wood. Please pray for us and don’t tell others, farewell.(从左侧下)明晚莱赛德和我

HELENA(在廊柱绕行)How happy some o'er other some can be! Through Athens I am

thought as fair as she.But what of

that? Demetrius thinks not so; He

will not know what all but he do

know. And as he errs, doting on

HERMIA's eyes, So I, admiring of his

qualities. Things base and vile,

holding no quantity, ove can

transpose to form and dignity. Love

looks not with the eyes, but with the

mind; And therefore is wing'd Cupid

painted blind. Nor hath Love's mind

of any judgment taste; Wings and no

eyes figure unheedy haste; And

therefore is Love said to be a child,

Because in choice he is so oft

beguil'd. As waggish boys in game themselves forswear, So the boy Love is perjur'd everywhere; For ere Demetrius look'd on HERMIA's eyne, He hail'd down oaths that he was only mine; And when this hail some heat from HERMIA felt, So he dissolv'd, and show'rs of oaths did melt.(停顿,稍作思考,面露喜色,面向观众说) I will go tell him of fair HERMIA's flight; Then to the wood will he to-morrow night Pursue her; and for this intelligenceIf I have thanks, it is a dear expense. But herein mean I to enrich my pain, To have

his sight thither and back again.(飘

ACT II. SCENE I

A wood near Athens

Puck)Aside:The wood was a favorite meeting-place of those little, beings known by the name of fairies. Between this little king and green of spirits there happened, at this time, a sad disagreement.

Oberon: I’ll meet by moonlight, proud Titania.

Titania: What, jealous Oberon! Fairies, run hence; I have left his company.

Oberon: Wait, foolish fairy, why do you oppose me so? Give me that little boy to be my slave.

Titania: Set your heart at rest, your whole fairy kingdom will not buy the boy from me.

Oberon: Well, go your way. Before the morning dawns, I will make you suffer for this injury. Come

here, my gentle Puck.

Puck: I’m here, my lord.

Oberon: Fetch me the flower which maids call Love-in-Idleness; the juice of that little purple flower, laid on the eyelids of those who sleep, will make them, when they awake, love madly the first thing they see. I have showed you

before,GO NOW!

Puck: I’ll do that very well. Believe me.

OBERON: Having once this juice, I'll

watch Titania when she is

asleep, And drop the liquor

of it in her eyes; The next

thing then she waking looks

upon, Be it on lion, bear, or

wolf, or bull, On meddling

monkey, or on busy ape, She

shall pursue it with the soul

of love. And ere I take this

charm from off her sight,

I’ll make her render up her

page to me.(传来嘈杂的声音)

But who comes here? I am

invisible; And I wil

overhear their conference

Demetrious: I love you not, therefore pursue me not. Where are Lysander and fair HERMIA? You told me they are there, but I can’t meet my HERMIA. Go away and follow me no more.

Helena: You draw me, you hard-hearted adamant.

Demetrious: Do I speak you fair? Tell you, I do not, nor I cannot love you.

Helena: And even for that do I love you the more. Please let me follow you even I am like your dog.

Demetrious(甩开Helena): I am sick when I do look on you!

Helena: And I am sick when I look not on you.

Demetrious: Let me go. Cause I’m so hate you!

Helena: Don’t leave me alone. Please stay, though you kill me.

Oberon: The poor girl! I have to help her. Welcome, wanderer, has you get the flower? (Puck

Puck(跑上来): Ay, there it is.

Oberon: Thank you, my cute spirit. Take a part of this flower: there has been a sweet lady here, who is in love with a cruel youth. If you find him sleeping, drop some of the love-juice in his eyes. But see that you do it when he awakes maybe this lady. You will know the man by the Athenian garments he wears.

Puck: Fear not, my lord, your servant shall do so.

SCENE II

The other part of the wood (仙女们忙著做事,此时泰妲尼娅进来) Titania: Fairies, sing me now asleep; then to your offices and let me rest.

仙女唱歌跳舞: Weaving spiders, come not here;

Hence, you long-legg'd spinners, hence.

Beetles black, approach not near;

Worm nor snail do no offence.(使用电影里的配乐)(然后散去,奥伯龙上,将汁液涂抹在泰妲尼娅的眼皮上。)

Oberon: What you see when you do you awake, do it for your true love take. Love and languish for his sake.

ACT III. SCENE I

Another part of the wood

Lysander: Fair love, you faint with wandering in the wood; if you think it good, and tarry for the comfort of the day.

HERMIA: Be it so, Lysander. Good night, sweet lover. No, good Lysander. For my sake, my dear, Lie further off yet, do not lie so near.

Hermia

LYSANDER: Come on,sweet, take the sense, of my innocence! Lovers should sleep side by side

HERMIA: But, gentle friend, for love and courtesy, Lie further off, in human modesty; So far is OK,(用手指着另一边,再次做出“请”的动作)and good night, sweet friends.

I wish sleep give you all his rest!

LYSANDER(不情愿的走到另一边,看着Hermia):I wish share with you.(躺下)

PUCK. Through the forest have I gone,

But Athenian found I none On whose eyes I might approve This flower's force in stirring love.

Night and silence- Who is here?

Weeds of Athens he doth wear: This is he, my master said, Despised the Athenian maid; And here the maiden, sleeping sound,

On the dank and dirty ground.

Pretty soul! she durst not lie

Near this lack-love, this kill-courtesy.

Churl, upon thy eyes I throw

All the power this charm doth owe:

When thou wak'st let love forbid

Sleep his seat on thy eyelid. So awake when I am gone; For I must now to Oberon.

狠心地欺负那美貌娇娃;

倾注着魔术的力量神奇;

(Helena

Helena: I am out of breath in the fond chase! The more my prayer, the lesser is my grace. Who is lying on the ground? Oh! He is Lysander! Is he dead or asleep? Good sir, if you are alive, awake.

Lysander(醒): What a pretty beauty! Helena, I would through fire for your sweet sake.

Helena: Do not say so, Lysander. Don’t you love HERMIA?

Lysander: I don’t love her at all. For me, she is just a black raven, and you are a white dove.

Helena: Oh! Why was I born to be mocked and though nothing of by everyone? Is it not enough, young man? That a lady, of one man refused, should of another be so abused!

Lysander(单腿跪下,祈求上天): All my power, address your love and might to honor Helena and to be her knight!

HERMIA: Lysander! Lysander! Where do you go? No sound? No word! If you hear me, please talk to me! I swoon almost with fear. But, where do you go?

Demetrious: you are here, my dear HERMIA!

I found you for a long time.

HERMIA: Do you see my Lysander?

Demetrious: who care? I would like to give his carcass to my hounds.

HERMIA: Out, dog! Do you really kill him? You are a devil!

Demetrious: Don’t be angry! You know, I don’t kill him.

HERMIA: I won’t believe you at all! Lysander, I’m sure I will find you!

Demetrious: She is so angry. I’d better stop following her. I have to take a rest. To night is too tired!

Oberon: Did you finish your work, Puck?

Puck: Sure, I did. And the woman is by his side: when he waked, of course she must be eyed.

Oberon: Hey! He is there! What did you do? Why does the cruel man still

sleep here? You must made

mistake!

Puck: Did I? Oh, I’m sorry.

Oberon: It’s ok,now you can finish it. Just be careful, do not make mistake again.

(Puck

ACT IV. SCENEI

The place where Demetrious sleeps Lysander: Why should you think that I should woo in scorn? I just hope you could love me.

Helena: Do you give HERMIA up? You should vow to her.

Lysander: My heart to her but as a guest, now my heart to you as a son comes home, never leave

. Demetrious醒来

DEMETRIUS: O Helen, goddess, nymph, perfect, divine! To what, my love, shall I compare thine eyne? Crystal is muddy. O, how ripe in show.Thy lips, those kissing cherries, tempting grow! That pure congealed white, high Taurus' snow, Fann'd with the eastern

wind, turns to a crow. When thou hold'st up thy hand. O, let me kiss. This

princess of pure white, this seal of

bliss!

Helena: Oh! Spite! You both love HERMIA, and now you both mock me! I know you hate me, but you must join in souls to mock me too?

Demetrious: Lysander, keep your HERMIA. Helena is mine!

Lysander: No! Helena, what he said is a lie!

Helena: you make me confused. Who should I believe in?

HERMIA: Lysander! You are here! Why did you unkindly leave me so?

Lysander: Because I do not love you, don’t you know?

HERMIA: You speak not as you think. It cannot be.

Lysander: All I say is true. I do hate you and love Helena. You can be out of hope.

Helena: Now I know that they have conjoined all you to fashion this false sport, in spite of me. Unkind HERMIA, if you had any pity, grace, or manners, you would not join with men in laughing at your poor friend.

HERMIA: I am filled with wonder at your angry words. I do not laugh at you; it seems you laugh at me.

Helena: Maybe it is partly my own fault, which death or absence soon shall remedy.

Demetrious: Don’t go, gentle Helena, please hear my excuse. My love, my life, my soul, fair Helena!

Lysander: I say I love you more than he can do.

Demetrious: If you say so, prove it.

HERMIA: Oh, Am not I HERMIA? Are not you Lysander? What’s going on?

Lysander: Hang off, let loose, I don’t want to see you

Demetrious: If you want to win Helena’s heart, follow me now. And to try who is right, of yours or mine, is most in Helena.

HERMIA: What change is this? Oh! You thief of love! What, have you come by night and stolen my love’s heart from him?

Helena: Good HERMIA, do not be so bitter with me. I evermore did love you, HERMIA, did ever keep your counsels, never lie you. And now, let me go. You see how simple and how fond I am.

HERMIA: Ok, get you gone. I am amazed, and know not what to say.

Oberon: Puck, this is your carelessness; or did you do it purposely?

Puck: Believe me, king of shadows, it was a mistake; However, I am not sorry this has happened, for I think their quarrelling makes an excellent game.

Oberon: You heard, Demetrious and Lysander are gone to seek a place to fight in.

I command you to fill the night with a thick fog, and let they shall not be

able to find each other. And when they are asleep, drop the juice of this other flower into Lysander’s eyes.

Puck: I know, I know

Oberon: Go about this quickly, Puck. I will go and see my queen and beg the little boy; and then I will release her charmed eyes from monster’s view, and all things shall be peace.

SCENE II

The palace of Titania

Titania: Oh! My sweet, I love you so much, and never leave you. ( Oberon

Oberon: Hey! What are you doing now? Where does the donkey come from?

Titania: Gosh! What can I say? Hmmm… he is …he is…is….

Oberon: I must tell you, you should not show kindness to an donkey.

Titania: But, as you see, he is so charming. However, please forgive me.

Oberon: Unless you give me the little boy.

Titania: I’ll give you if you want.

Oberon: Good. But first I will release the magic.

Titania: What?

Oberon

Oberon: Now, wake up, my sweet queen.

Titania: My Oberon, what a strange dream have I have! It seems I fell love with an donkey.

Oberon: There lies your love.

Titania: How came these things to pass? Oh! He is the most ugly thing I’ve seen!

Oberon: Don’t worry about him, I’ll take off this head. Come, my queen, take hands

with me.

Titania: My heart is filled with happiness because we are new in amity.

Lysander: I think I see these things with parted eye, when every thing seems double.

Helena: I think so. And I have found Demetrious like a jewel, mine own, and not mine own.

Demetrious: Honey, Don’t worry. I’m yours.

HERMIA: Oh! Here comes my father

Lysander: Yes, it is. Please, please let HERMIA marry me too, I’ll bring her happiness, I swear.

HERMIA: Oh! Dad! Please, he is really a perfect guy.

Egeus: Hmmm…, since Demetrious wouldn’t marry you, I will no longer opposed your marriage with Lysander. Now, you these lover, can we come home?

Yes!

Oberon: Look! What the sweet couples they are!

Titania: I like to see their smiling face.

Puck: I also like to hear their laughter.

Titania: Fairies, come here, in order to celebrate the happy ending, let’s sing and dance!

Fairies

Aside: And now, if any offended with this story of fairies and their tricks, they have only to think that they have been asleep and dreaming. And I hope no one will be so hard to please as to be offended with this pretty, harmless Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Sentiment after Reading “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” There is a booming of love bell from a distance where there is a white roof church. The land is draped in a veil of mystery by the moonlight who is the Dark Goddess. The fragrance of summer flowers are diffusing in the jungle, and also the blue sea, the quiet forest, the tranquil garden, all of them are full of the sweet smell. When everything has gone to sleep quietly, however, spirits are driving the boat what made of flowers to the shore. Oh, what do they want to do? We don't know now, but we cognize the good dream is about to begin and the curtain of the midsummer night with love rises…… In the palace of Theseus in Athens, a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazonian queen Hippolyta is according to script. On one side, Hermia refuses to comply with her father, Egeus, who wishes for her to marry his chosen man, Demetrius. In response, Egeus beg the ancient privilege of whereby a daughter must marry the suitor chosen by her father, or else face death or lifelong chastity worshipping Diana as a nun. The law in this sense is an anachronism. Therefore, Hermia and her lover Lysander decide to elope by escaping through the forest at night. Hermia informs her best friend Helena, but Helena has recently been rejected by Demetrius and decides to win back his favor by revealing the plan to him. Therefore, Demetrius chases Hermia who he loves followed doggedly by Helena. On the other side, in the forest, Oberon, the king of the fairies, and his queen, Titania, are quarrelling with each because Titania refuses to give a little changeling boy to Oberon for using as his "knight" or "henchman", since the child's mother was one of Titania's worshippers and she was always company with her. In order to distract Titania, force her to give up the page-boy, and help Helena wins the love of Demetrius, Oberon orders the mischievous Puck who also called “Hobgoblin” and “Robin Goodfellow” to help him fetch a flower called "love-in-idleness" what can produce a magical juice, which makes the victim fall in love with the first living thing he sees when he awakens. Oberon drops the liquor of the flower in Titania's eyes when she is asleep for distracting her and forcing her to give up the India boy. What's more, Oberon also orders Puck to crush this herb into the eyelids of the young Athenian man. Instead, Puck takes a mistake. He puts the juice on the eyes of Lysander who should have had a true-love with Hermia, but because of Puck's negligence that he then falls in love with Helena. When Oberon finds this out, he asks Puck to make everything restorable at once and Demetrius falls in love with Helena. Everybody wakes up at the break of day and everything develops as they hoped. All shall be well, and Jack shall have Jill in the last. And also the king and queen of fairies patch up their tiff. The world goes down to be peaceful again. In this comedy drama, Shakespeare gives the good performance of the women. They have a noble moral character and the independent personality. They believe everyone cannot chop and change in love. The most admired thing is they have the courage to pursue their own love, commitment and loyalty of love at that time. Hermia's father wants her to marry Demetrius, but she loses her heart to another young aristocrat Lysander. And Egeus feels very angry when he knows that they share a mutual affinity. He talks about the thing with the Duke of Athens and hopes that Hermia will bow to him under the law of Athens, but it not works. There is another female image Helena, Hermia's good friend. She is very clever, pursuing her love and not giving up. Although she loved Demetrius deeply, Demetrius was infatuated with her good friend Hermia. When she learned that Hermia and Lysander will get away from here together, she said, "if I have thanks, it is a dear expense: But herein mean I to enrich my pain, to have his sight thither and back again." She told Demetrius the news about Hermia, just for gaining a little reward to comfort herself. She is also to pursue love, but her heart is covered all over with cuts and bruises. Viola who is the role of the "Twelfth Night" is same with Helena. Both of them love deeply a person who doesn't love herself, but there is also a difference between Helena and Viola. Duck Orsino don't know Viola loves him, while Demetrius still don't care about her feeling even knowing Helena loved him very much. However, whatever Demetrius do to her, which may humiliate and hurt her, she still insists on pursuing her love. Just what she expresses let Demetrius be in the wrong and Oberon have a compassion on her, so that her image is very

原文地址:仲夏夜之梦英文读后感作者:一米阳光 A Midsummer Night's Dream (仲夏夜之梦) is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare written sometime in the 1590s. It portrays the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors in a moonlit forest, and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit it and Duke of the Athenians. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular and is widely performed across the world. The play features three interlocking plots, connected by a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazonian queen Hippolyta. In the opening scene, Hermia refuses to comply with her father Egeus's wish for her to marry his chosen man, Demetrius. In response, Egeus quotes before Theseus an ancient Athenian law whereby a daughter must marry the suitor chosen by her father, or else face death or lifelong chastity worshipping Diana as a nun. The word in this sense is an anachronism. Hermia and her lover Lysander therefore decide to elope by escaping through the forest at night. Hermia informs her best friend Helena, but Helena has recently been rejected by Demetrius and decides to win back his favor by revealing the plan to him. Demetrius, followed doggedly by Helena, chases Hermia, who, in turn, chases Lysander, from whom she becomes separated. Meanwhile, Oberon, king of the fairies, and his queen, Titania, arrive in the same forest to attend Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. Oberon and Titania are estranged because Titania refuses to give her Indian page-boy to Oberon for use as his "knight" or "henchman," since the child's mother was one of Titania's worshippers. Oberon seeks to punish Titania's disobedience and recruits the mischievous Puck (also called Hobgoblin and Robin Goodfellow) to help him apply a magical juice from a flower called "love-in-idleness," which makes the victim fall in love with the first living thing he sees when he awakens. Oberon applies the juice to Titania in order to distract her and force her to give up the page-boy. Having seen Demetrius act cruelly toward Helena, Oberon orders Puck to spread some of the juice on the eyelids of the young Athenian man. Instead, Puck puts the juice on the eyes of Lysander, who then falls in love with Helena. When Oberon finds this out, he makes Puck apply the juice to Demetrius. Due to Puck's errors, Hermia's two lovers temporarily turn against her in favor of Helena. Helena, however, is convinced that her two suitors are mocking her, as neither loved her originally. The four pursue and quarrel with each other all night, losing themselves in the dark and in the maze of their romantic entanglements. Meanwhile, a band of "rude mechanicals" (lower-class labourers) have arranged to perform a crude play about Pyramus and Thisbe for Theseus' wedding, and venture into the forest, near Titania's bower, for their rehearsal. Nick Bottom, a stage-struck weaver, is spotted by Puck, who transforms his head into that of an ass (donkey). Titania is awoken by Bottom's singing, and she immediately falls in love with him. She treats him as if he is a nobleman and lavishes attention upon him. While in this state of devotion, she encounters Oberon and casually gives him the Indian boy.

NO. 1007050106 Class:BE 1 It’s just a midsummer night’s dream Once I attended a speech given by a professor from a university in Hong Kong. When we introduced ourselves as BE majors, he asked, “You study English, how many foreign classics have you read? Who is your favorite author?” We all were in silence. But by that time, I made a decision that I would read Shakespeare at least while I am still in university. And the first book I chose myself is A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For Shakespeare, his tragic works may be more famous than comedies. But I prefer comedy. The moment I opened A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I thought it’s a tragedy. But it seems that all happiness come after sadness. As Yu Qiu Yu once said, “Tragedy is not great, neither is comedy, but those tragicomedy that let people read it over with tears and laughter. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors, who are manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. I found some common points among Shakespeare’s masterpieces, especially his love stories——the protagonists rebel against the traditional established practices and they look forward to a peaceful and equitable world; they even sacrifice their lives to achieve this dream. Hermia dose so. She refuses to follow her father Egeus’s instructions to marry Demetrius, whom he has chosen for her. Juliet and Romeo also do in the same way, they die together for their love. I guess why Shakespeare wrote like this is that he wanted to do the same thing just like the people he modeled. We all know he had to marry a woman he didn’t like at all, and he didn’t protest. So he modeled these characters on purpose to let them resisted the ruin of society. The more I read, the greater I think Shakespeare is. If this play had been divided
