Consumers at the Whale Inside Dark Restaurant are led by a waiter with night –vision Goggles(夜视镜). Inside Dark Restaurant in Beijing, a table of 30 diners was getting quarrelsome. “I’m touching your head!”said one, like a talkative child. “Who just said that?”another replied. Such voices floated across the 90-plus-seat restaurant, but no one could see who was talking, except the waiters, who were equipped with military-grade night-vision goggles.

In the new conceptual dining, restaurants are turning off the lights to focus attention on the food. The trend seems to have started in Zurich and has since spread all over the world, with diners sitting in unlit rooms and, lately, being served by waiters in night-vision goggles. The idea is that by depriving(剥夺) one sense (sight), other senses are heightened.

Darkness has other benefits. ''Chinese people tend to be shy,'' said Chen Long, who owns Whale Inside Dark, which opened in January. ''People have found it easy to break the ice here.'' The first dark restaurant, which opened in Zurich in 1999, had a simple intention. The goal ''was creating jobs for the blind and handicapped people,'' said the manager. The concept has been popular in Paris, London, Sydney and elsewhere, offering new variations on sight deprivation, by which people can experience a lot in a completely dark condition.

In Beijing, the Whale Inside Dark Restaurant is not only about heightening the sense of taste, but lowering social inhibitions(压抑). It is popular with Internet daters, who met on matchmaking

Web sites that are spreading throughout China. Diner for two is about 225 yuan, or $29 at 7.76 yuan to the dollar.

Eating in the dark is not without its troubles. Instead of family-style dining, food is served on single-serving plates. When each dish arrives, the server guides your hand to the plate and offers helpful tips like, ''This course is eaten with a spoon.''

The style seems to be working . ''People feel a lot more comfortable when they can't be seen by others,'' said Mr. Chen, who is opening a second branch in Shang-hai, ''Couples get to know each other without seeing other's faces.''

56.What’s the best title of the passage?

C.The troubles in the dark restaurant D.The advantages in the dark restaurant 57.The advantages of the dark restaurant include the following except .

In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called “satellite kids”, who live in one place but whose parents live in another place.

Asians are immigrating to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the West. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university.

The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. Because of these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the West. Therefore, these children become “satellite kids”, and most of th eir parents do not know how sad it is to be a “satellite kid”.

Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kid” problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them. Th ey are often absent from school. To be a “satellite kid” means growing up in a country where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means growing up lonely, because your parents are else where. What these “satellite kids” will probably say to their parents is that it’s better to have parents around than to have a university education.

64. Some Asian parents send their kids abroad because ________.

A. they hope their children may easily find a job there

B. the kids may not be accepted by universities in their own countries

C. all foreign universities are better than the ones in their own countries

B. living abroad alone

C. with university education

66. Some Asian immigrant children become “satellite kids” because their parents ________.

A. want to leave their own country

B. want them to go to university

C. return to their country to work

D. want them to be independent

LONDON, England(CNN)--- The youngest

person to sail solo around the world returned home

Thursday from his 30,000-mile, 282-day ocean

journey.

Mike Perham, 17, sailed into Lizard Point in

Cornwall, the southernmost point in Britain, at 9:47 a.m., his race team said.

“It feels absolutely brilliant,” Mike told CNN by phone hours before crossing the finish line. “I'm really, really excited to be going across the line at last. It doesn't feel like long since I crossed it first.”

Mike set off on his round-the-world trip on November 18, 2008. He has been sailing his yacht, https://www.sodocs.net/doc/d35051922.html,, single-handedly, though a support team has been sailing next to him along the way.

Mike learned how to sail when he was seven years old from his father, Peter and at age 14, he sailed across the Atlantic alone.

The teenager's school --- which Mike describes as “highly supportive” of his trip --- has redesigned his coursework to fit in with his trip. It also gave him some coursework to do during “quiet moments,” according to Mike's Web site.

There haven't been many of those quiet moments. Repeated autopilot failures forced him to

stop for repairs in Portugal, the Canary Islands, South Africa, and twice in Australia, according to his Web site.

Bad weather in the Southern Ocean --- between Australia and Antarctica --- forced Mike to battle 50ft waves and 57 mph winds. He said at one point, a “freak wave” picked up the boat and turned it on its side.

“My feet were on the ceiling at the time,” he told CNN. “That was a really hairy m oment, and I was certainly thinking, ‘Why am I here?’ But we took the sails off and the day after I thought, ‘This is brilliant!’”

Mike describes his father as his biggest hero, always supportive of what he wanted to achieve. Peter Perham said he wasn't too worried about his son facing dangerous situations at sea, as long as he knew what to do and stayed safe.

第II卷(非选择题,共35分)

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)每空1词。

Standard and labels(标签)of organic food

Organic food is produced by farmers who use renewable(可恢复) resources and pay much attention to environmental quality.

Organic food differs from normally produced food. Organic meat, eggs, and diary products come from animals that are given no hormones(激素). Organic fruit and vegetables are produced without using pesticides and fertilizers. Organic food contains at least 50% more nutrients, minerals and vitamins than non-organic food. By only buying and eating organic food, it is a widely agreed fact that you will be eating more healthily.

Before a product can be labeled “organic”, a government-approved certifier(证明机构) will exam the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to make his products meet organic food standards. Companies that handle or process organic food must be examined, too.

When you go to the supermarket, how can you judge it is organic food? You can look at package labels and watch for signs in the supermarket. Along with the national organic standards, strict labeling rules were made to help consumers know the exact organic content of the food they buy.

Single-ingredient foods:

Look for the word “organic” and a seal(图章) on vegetables or fruits. Or they may appear on the signs. The word “organic” and the seal may also appear on packages of meat, milk, eggs, cheese and other single-ingredient foods.

Foods with more than one ingredient:

You must watch its organic percentage. Look for the name and address of the certifier of the packaged products that contain at least 70 percent of organic ingredients.

书面表达

One possible version:

Recently we held a class meeting to discuss the problem of pedestrians crossing the street while the traffic light is red. As we can see, some pedestrians don’t obey traffic rules and jay-walk frequently. This blocks traffic, seriously affects drivers and causes accidents to happen, endangering the safety of pedestrians and drivers alike. In a word, jaywalking produces negative effects and does not help to develop good social behavior.

It is really a pity to see all this in our society, and to deal with the situation, the government has taken some measures. When caught jaywalking, pedestrians are reprimanded so that they will become aware of the dangers of doing this, or they are fined on the spot. Sometimes the traffic police will report jaywalkers to their workplace and expose them to the public. However, it will still take a long time to stop pedestrians from jay-walking.

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

石家庄二中2020-2021学年第一学期高三英语学科周测试卷8、23

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2. What might people benefit from the new technology mentioned above? A. Living a life free from stress. B. Improving the heart function gradually. C. Accessing health services for free. D.
