This is the VOA Special English Education Report This week in our Foreign Student Series; we continue our discussion of college entrance tests in the United States. There are two competing admissions tests at the undergraduate level, the SAT and the ACT. We talked last week about the SA T. The reasoning test involves mathematics and language and includes writing an essay. You can also take SA T subject tests. The ACT is designed to measure what a student learned in high school. There are questions in f our skill areas: math, English, reading and science. The ACT takes just over f our hours. It costs f i f ty-six dollars to take outside the United States. A writing test, which

is not required, adds thirty minutes and f if t een dollars. Details about the ACT can be f ound at https://www.sodocs.net/doc/05256511.html,. ACT used to be short f or American College Testing, SAT once meant Scholastic Aptitude Test. But today the letters no longer stand f or anything. Most American colleges and universities require applicants f or a bachelor's degree to take one of the tests. Some students take both. The ACT is advertised as "America's most widely accepted college entrance exam." The SA T is advertise d as the one "most widely taken" and, combined with high school grades, "the best predictor of college success." Yet activists have long debated the f airness of these tests and what they really show. The issue has intensif ie d as the test preparation industry has grown. Now, some colleges and universities have stopped requiring the tests.

A group called Fair Test has f ound almost eight hundred schools where students may be able to gain admission without the SA T or ACT. The list is at f https://www.sodocs.net/doc/05256511.html,. For graduate-level programs, applicants of ten have to take the Graduat e Record Examinations, or GRE. The general test measures reasoning, thinking and writing skills. The cost outside the United States is one hundred seventy dollars, except in China, Taiwan and South Korea. The cost there is one hundred ninety-f ive dollars. Students can also take GRE subject tests. Inf ormation about the GRE can be f ound on the Educational Testing Service Web site, https://www.sodocs.net/doc/05256511.html,. The two major language tests f or non-native English speakers are the TOEFL and the IELTS. These will be our subject next week. And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. Our Foreign Students Series is online at https://www.sodocs.net/doc/05256511.html,. I'm Steve Ember.

Now, the VOA special English Program words and their stories. Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People at the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs f or walks, let them play outside and give them go od f ood and medical care. However dogs without owners to care f or them lead a di ff erent k ind of li f e. The expression to lead a dog’s lif e describes a person who has an unhappy existence. Some people said we live in a dog eat dog world. That means many people are completing f or the same things like good jobs. They say that to be successf ul. A person has to work like a dog, this means they have to work very very hard. Such hard work can make peopl e dog tired and the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog. Still people say every dog has its day. This means that every people enjoy a successf ul period during his or her lif e. To be successf ul, people of ten have to learn new skills. Yet some people say that you can never teach an old dog new trick. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be describe d as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are of t en used to guard their property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than bite. A junkyard is not a f un place f or a dog. Many dogs in the United States sleep in saf e little houses near their owner’s home. This dog houses provide shelter. Yet they can be cold and lonely in the winter. Husbands and wives use this dog house term when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at their husband f or coming home late or f orgetting their waiting anniversary. She might tell him that his is in the dog house. She may not treat him nicely until his apologizes. However, the husband may decide they it is the best to leave things alone not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie. Dogs expressions also are use to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather, but we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. This VOA Special English program words and their stories with written by Jill Mos. 二.两篇英语文章

1.

Do y ou think that y ou are Streetwise?

We read about it in the papers nearly every day now------ teenagers getting mugged, stabbed, and ev en murdered in fights, attacks and robberies. It’s time f or us to wake up. We need to realize how not to be a target, and also what we can do to prevent an attack from going bad if trouble cannot be avoided.

Our biggest defenses against ending up a victim are to be aware. This means being completely aware of what is going on around y ou and what could possibly happen. Armed with this information, you are less likely to walk into dangerous situations, and therefore less likely to end up in trouble. But how do you become aware? What do you need to lookout f or and avoid?

When you’re out, wherever it may be…. shopp ing, sightseeing, going to a restaurant, at a party---- you can protect yourself from becoming a victim. When you are out, make sure you keep away, at all costs, from arguments between people, such as couples, friends, strangers and trouble makers. If you are out at night and you hear some raised voices or shouting, mov e away as quickly as possible.

Under no account, try to inv estigate what is happening. Even if you see a couple f ighting, be careful if you want to help. The chances that the boy might turn on y ou are very high. As regards a fight between the police and troublemakers, you may think you are giving the law a hand by hopping in, but the police might think you are one of the troublemakers and take you off for questioning.

Here, now, are some things y ou should remember-

1.Try never to walk alone at night. Do your best to have someone with you. If you are alone, you are an easy target for any group of people. 2.People easily recognize a person who is lost. So stay away from areas you are unfamiliar with.

3.If you are out walking, avoid places where there are no street lights. Trouble often takes place in dark alley w ays or culls-de sac.

4. Don’t over indulge in alcoholic drinks or talk on your mobile phone while walking alone, late at night. There are thieves waiting somewhere to take advantage of such a situation.

2.It was only a few weeks after my surgery, and I went to Dr. Belt's office for a checkup. It was just after my first chemotherapy treatment.

My scar was still very tender. M y arm was numb underneath. This whole set of unique and weird sensations was like hav ing a new roommate to share the two-bedroom apartment formerly known as my breasts - now lovingly known as "the breast and the chest." As usual, I was taken to an examination room to have my blood drawn, again - a terrifying process for me, since I'm so frightened of needles. I lay down on the examining table. I'd worn a big plaid flannel shirt and a camisole underneath. It was a caref ully thought out costume that I hoped others would regard as a casual wardrobe choice. The plaid camouflaged my new chest, the camisole protected it and the buttons on the shirt made f or easy medical access. Ramona entered the room. Her warm sparkling smile was familiar, and stood out in contrast to my fears. I'd first seen her in the office a few weeks earlier. She wasn't my nurse on that day, but I remember her because she was laughing. She laughed in deep, round and rich tones. I remember wondering what could be so funny behind that medical door. What could she possibly f ind to laugh about at a time like this? So I decided she wasn't serious enough about the whole thing and that I would try to find a nurs e who was. But I was wrong. This day was different. Ramona had taken my blood before. She knew about my fear of needles, and she kindly hid the paraphernalia under a magazine with a bright blue picture of a kitchen being remodeled. As we opened the blouse and dropped the camisole, the catheter on my breast was exposed and the f resh scar on my chest could be seen. She said, "How is your scar healing?" I said, "I think pretty well. I wash around it gently each day." The memory of the shower water hitting my numb chest flashed across my face. She gently reached ov er and ran her hand across the scar, examining the smoothness of the healing skin and looking f or any irregularities. I began to cry gently and quietly. She brought her warm ey es to mine and said, "You haven't touched it yet, have y ou?" And I said, "No." So this wonderf ul, warm woman laid the palm of her golden brown hand on my pale chest and she gently held it there. For a long time. I continued to cry quietly. In soft tones she said, "This is part of your body. This is you. It's okay to touch it." But I couldn't. So she touched it f or me. The scar. The healing wound. And beneath it, she touched my heart. Then Ramona said, "I'll hold your hand while you touch it." So she placed her hand next to mine, and we both were quiet.

That was the gift that Ramona gave me. That night as I lay down to sleep, I gently placed my hand on my chest and I left it t here until I dozed off. I knew I wasn't alone. We were all in bed together, metaphorically speaking, my breast, my chest, Ramona's gift and me.

For some reason we were reminded that we primates(灵长目) need love. Kim Bard of the University of Portsmouth in England and her colleagues carried out a study on 46 baby chimpanzees orphans(黑猩猩孤儿), which had lost their mothers. The study showed that primate babies that have tight relationships with mother figures do much better on cognitive (认知的 ) tests than babies who only grew up with peers (同伴), but this is not breaking news. In fact, it ' s old news. In the 1950s, Harry Harlow did a series of experiments with baby monkeys that showed. that lack of love and comfort makes for a crazy monkey. Harlow constructed a cage that included a wire monkey "mother" with a plastic face. Then he equipped the "mother" with a milk bottle .The cage also had another wire "mother" who was covered with soft cloth. The baby monkeys spent all their time with the cloth "mother" arid only went to the wire "mother" to feed. Harlow's monkey experiment was important because, at the time, child care experts, and everybody's grandmother had a "no touch, no comfort" policy toward children. They advised parents not to respond to crying babies. They thought that babies should sleep alone to become independent, and for God's sake put that kid down. But Harlow's work changed that policy. Mothers were soon permitted to have their babies next to them in the hospital. The current chimp research based on Harlow's work shows that mother's love doesn't just make for a psychologically(糖神上地) healthy child, it also makes for a smart child. The highly raised chimps do better than those that are not loved, and the well-raised chimps do even better than human kids on IQ tests. We are primates, social animals which need love. We need to be held and talked to and made to feel that at least one person wants to be with us all the time. 1. The study Kim Bard and his colleagues did A. included 46 baby and mother monkeys B. is nothing new to people about the findings C. showed that many chimpanzees lack of love when they were young D. showed many chimpanzees had good relationship with their mothers 2. Harlow built two "mothers" for baby,.monkeys to _______ A. make them live comfortably B. let them have more choices
