Many of us think that all foreigners certainly celebrate Thanksgiving.But this is simply not true.Only the US and Canada mark the day---and they do so on two different dates.

Chinese is a beautiful but complex(复杂的)language,with tens of thousands of characters. When you come across a Chinese character that you don’t know,what will you do?You might look it up in a dictionary and find its pinyin.

Pinyin,a system that uses the Latin alphabet(拉丁字母),tells us how to read Chinese characters.This year marks pinyin’s61st birthday.In1958,Chinese experts Zhou Youguang and his team designed Pinyin.They created the system to help illiterate Chinese people learn how to read.This idea worked out quite well.The number of the illiteracy in China dropped from80 percent in1950to52percent in1964.And today,it’s only4.08percent,Guangming Daily reported.

Pinyin has been useful in other ways as well.It helps to improve the use of Standard Chinese, or Mandarin(普通话),so people who speak different local languages can still understand each other.And it also makes it much easier to type Chinese characters on computers and cellphones.
