Task 1

Question: Are you punctual?

Posted July 2, 2010 By Lisa L.

Answer 1: This is a great cultural question. Those traveling or doing business abroad should always find out the answer to this question. I‘m punctual in my work life. But I’m not punctual in my personal life by American standards标准. We, American Brazilians巴西人, are always late by American standards: if the party is at 8, everyone shows up at 10 and everyone, including the host主人, is happy that we are on time. Cheers!

Answer 2: It is good etiquette礼节to be on time for an appointment. It is also supposed good etiquette to arrive a little late for a party, which I have never ever understood. I tend to be early for everything. And I consider考虑it impolite不礼貌to be otherwise相反的.

Answer 3: ABSOLUTELY绝对地! I believe that showing up late for a date约会, appointment, class, etc. is an insult侮辱to the person(s) you are meeting. It seems to say:“My time is more important than yours.”

Answer 4: Not only am I “punctual”, I am always early for most events in my life. The secret秘密is (and it really works!): I keep all the clocks (except my computer) in my life 10 minutes fast!

Answer 5: Yep — too much so. It really gets on my nerves. Even when I really try to be late, I am earlier. It is a terrible habit. Okay, I AM late sometimes. The only time I am late is when I get lost, and then I am really late by an hour or so. But hey, we all have our mishaps小事故, don't we?

Answer 6: When dating, I always made sure I was on time. Once I had a girlfriend who was always late for every date. If the date was at 9 and it was a 45 minute trip for her, then she would arrive at 9:45. I liked her a lot, but could not stand忍受the bad punctuality.

Answer 7: I hate to be late and always plan on being at least 10 minutes early. However, in the Washington area, when a bridge or major主要的highway shuts down, there may not be any way to get where you are going. So I would have to say that I am always early, except when I can‘t get there at all, in which case 事件I will call as soon as I know I am going to be late. It doesn't happen often, but I really hate it when it does.

Are the following statements true or false according to the passage? Write T / F accordingly.

1()If you are two hours late for a Brazilian party, you don't have to worry about it.

2()The second answer says that one should be punctual for both an appointment and a party.

3 ()The third posting person believes that being late for an appointment is an insult to oneself.

4()The fourth netizen keeps his computer clock 10 minutes fast.

5()The fifth person is really nervous about his being late.

Task 2

Hanna P., Marketing市场营销Expert专家at a famous software company, posted online 网上发帖his own commuting通勤experience and asked the netizens 网民to share their views:

I went today:

by bus No. 81,

then trolley bus无轨电车No. 3,

then underground地铁Line 1,

then bus No.139 and finally bus No. 87

(25 km all together). Who more?

And actually事实上the point意义of the question is: why do so many people spend lots of time and money getting to work instead of moving near to it? It would beso nerve神经- and traffic-saving if everyone lived near their work.

In Portugal葡萄牙, moving next to work will certainly mean buying a house that we often cannot afford. I work outside Lisbon里斯本and I travel on Monday to work, stay there and need only three steps to get to work. I travel back to Lisbon Friday afternoon.

James B.:

I‘ve been working for small companies — companies move, change and go out of business. If I had lived next to where I worked, I would have had to move seven times in the last 30 years. That would have been difficult to my family. So I live where I want, and plan on driving up to 40 miles, one-way单程的, to get to work.

I drive. I work on short-term短期的contract 合同assignments 任务which can be anything from 3 to 12 months, so moving is just not a choice. In the UK it can take 3 to 6 months to buy and sell a house anyway. My current现在的employer is about 40 miles away. Last year it was a daily round往返的trip of 189 miles —way行程too much!(posted 13 hours ago) Lisa N.:

When I was at my last job, I drove about 10 miles one way to get there, on city roads and the interstate州际公路. It was a fast commute usu ally. I don‘t have a job right now, but when I do, I might use a park and ride system as I may be commuting from the suburbs郊区to the city. I might also use the light rail轻轨if it is available可使用的.

Colleges taking another look at value of merit-based aid Good grades and high tests scores still matter—a lot—to many colleges as they award financial aid. But with low-income students projected to make up an ever-larger share of the college-bound population in coming years, some schools are re-examining whether that aid, typically known as “merit aid”, is the most effective use of precious institutional dollars. George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for example, said last week that it would cut the value of its average merit scholarships by about one-third and reduce the number of recipients(接受者), pouring the savings, about $2.5 million, into need-based aid. Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., made a similar decision three years ago. Now, Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., says it will phase out merit scholarships altogether. No current merit-aid recipients will lose their scholarships, but need-based aid alone will be awarded beginning with students entering in fall 2008. Not all colleges offer merit aid; generally, the more selective a school, the less likely it is to do so. Harvard and Princeton, for example, offer generous need-based packages, but many families who don’t meet need eligibility(资格)have been willing to pay whatever they must for a big-name school. For small regional colleges that struggle just to fill seats, merit aid can be an important revenue-builder because many recipients still pay enough tuition dollars over and above the scholarship amount to keep the institution running. But for rankings-conscious schools in between, merit aid has served primarily as a tool to recruit top students and to improve their academic profits. “They’re trying to buy students,”says Skidmore College economist Sandy Baum.
