Utilisation:

Cable for Telephone

Systems, Door Entry and

Alarm Systems.

This Cable is Suitable for

Utilisation with Insulation

Displacement Connectors

(IDC).

Construction:

1.Conductor:1/0.50mm +/-0.02 Plain Annealed Copper

Conductor , circular in cross section,free

from defects to IEC 60028, Standard of

Resistance for Copper.

Drain wire (Earth), tinned annealed

Copper 1.38mm, circular in cross section,

free from defects.

The elongation at break of bare conductor

shall be not less than 15% at 20 C. The

test shall be made in accordance with

Clause 3.3 of IEC Publication 60189-1.

The ultimate tensile force of a 250mm

length of 1.38mm Earth conductor

containing a joint shall be not less than

80% of that of an adjacent length of

conductor not containing a joint.

Joints in the 0.5mm diameter conductors

in the cable shall be immediately apparent

when the sheath is removed and the pairs

prepared for termination. This requirement

indicates when it is necessary to re-locate

an IDC to avoid possible damage and may

be met by using shrink-down sleeving,

approximately 25mm long and of

contrasting colour to that of the insulation,

to insulate the joint.

2.Core Insulation: Insulation shall comply with the

requirements of PVC Compound Grade TI

54 in BS EN 50290-2 part 21 except for

the insulation of the 1.38mm diameter

Earth conductor which shall comply with

the requirements of PVC Compound

Grade TI 51 in BS EN 50290-2 part 21,

coloured as below.

Two-colour wires shall have uniform

colours as below in the form of either ring

markings or continuous spiral markings,

which, when viewed from any side, shall

be readily identifiable in every 16mm

length.

The markings shall occupy between 20

and 30% of the total area of the insulation.

Markings in the finished wire shall

reasonably match the colours in BS

6746C.

Ring markings shall consist of ink bands

applied on a base colour at right angles to

the axis of the conductor.

Base colours are indicated by use of

capital letters.

The colour of the insulation on the

1.38mm diameter Earth conductor shall be

Cream.

The conductor shall be uniformly covered

with the specified PVC having radial

thickness and diameter over the insulation

as below.

3.Construction: A single insulated conductor, or

a pair of insulated conductors uniformly

twisted together and designated the a-wire

and b-wire or a triple of insulated

conductors uniformly twisted together and

designated the a-wire, b-wire and c-wire.

The lay length for pairs and triples in the

completed cable shall not exceed 100mm.

Layers

Pairs:

The elements shall be laid-up with an

imparted regular uni- directional twist or

other approved method, to form a compact

and circular cable core.

The colours of the wires in the cabling

elements shall be as shown

The elements shall be assembled in

reverse order to that shown i.e. the last named element shall be in the centre.

Inter-layer tapes consisting of an open lapping of polyethylene terephthalate may be applied at the discretion of the manufacturer.

Triples:

Each element shall form an individual cable core.

Where appropriate five primary sheathed elements shall be assembled to form a cable core, which shall be protected as below.

The colours of the wires in the cabling elements shall be as shown

Unit Construction:

16 pair

The elements shall be in pairs and shall be assembled.

Each unit shall consist of 16 pairs, coloured as below cabling elements 1-4, 6-9, 11-14 and 16-19.

A unit shall be divided into sub-units as required, the first consisting of elements 1-4 and 6-9, the second of elements 11-14 and 16-19.

20 Pair

These cables shall contain a 1.38mm diameter insulated earth conductor.

The elements shall be in pairs and shall be assembled as units or sub units.

Each unit shall consist of 20 pairs, coloured as below cabling elements 1-20.

A unit shall be divided into sub-units as required, the first consisting of elements 1-10, and the second of elements 11-20.

30 Pair

The elements shall be in pairs and shall be assembled as units or sub units.

Each unit shall consist of 30 pairs, coloured as below cabling elements 1-30.

A unit shall be divided into sub-units as required, the first consisting of elements 1-15, and the second of elements 16-30.

An open lapping of polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene tape shall be applied over each unit or sub-unit. The colour of the tape shall be as specified below. For 8, 10, 16, 20 and 30 pair cables this lapping may be omitted. The length of lay of these unit identification tapes shall not exceed 100mm.

The units and sub-units so formed shall be assembled as specified below into a compact and circular cable core. In each layer the units or sub-units shall be assembled in order starting from Orange and ending in Green.

Inter-layer tapes consisting of an open lapping of polyethylene terephthalate may be applied at the discretion of the manufacturer. The colour of the tape shall not conflict with those tapes, which identify the units.

For those cables where shown, the 1.38 mm diameter Earth conductor, one per cable regardless of the number of pairs, may be included, anywhere in the cable core but not within a unit or sub-unit for multi-unit cables. If required this will be indicated when ordered.

Except for cables containing 6 pairs or less when this protection may be omitted, the stranded core shall be covered overall prior to sheathing, with polyethylene terephthalate tape, by one of the following methods:-

A single tight lapping having an overlap of 25% nominal.

Two lapping tapes applied breaking joint. One tape applied longitudinally with an overlap of not less than 10 mm or 30% nominal of the tape width, whichever is the smaller.

Two similar tapes applied longitudinally with each overlap not less than 10mm or 25% nominal of the tape width, whichever is the smaller.

The manufacturer's identification thread (BSI Document PD 2379) shall be separately incorporated in the cable, unless the cable sheath is marked. The thread shall be non-hygroscopic and all dyes used shall be colour fast.

A non-metallic rip-cord, which may

incorporate the manufacturer's

identification colours, shall be laid under

the sheath. The cord shall be non-

hygroscopic and all dyes used shall be

colour fast. It shall provide an effective

means of slitting the sheath longitudinally

to facilitate its removal.

Screen/Moisture Barrier:

A laminated tape, AL/PE 150/40uM tape,

applied with a suitable lay, a minimum

overlap of 30%

3.Final Sheath:

The sheath material shall be coloured and

shall be a Low Smoke Zero Halogen

compound.

The sheath shall be coloured Cream, Grey,

White, Black or Light Grey 3p as required.

The dimensions of the sheath shall

conform as shown below but in

determining the minimum thickness of the

sheath the indentation caused by the rip-

cord and/or identification thread, if

included, shall be ignored.

The sheath shall be continuous and of

uniform thickness. It shall be applied to fit

closely to the cable core but shall not

adhere to any underlying core protection or

to the insulation of the conductors. The

completed cable shall be uniformly round.

Insulation :

It shall be possible to strip 50mm of

insulation from any wire, with the

exception of the 1.38mm diameter Earth

conductor, taken from the cable with a

force, which does not exceed 4.4 N for

0.50mm conductors. The preparation of the sample and the performance of the test shall be based upon the method described in IEC Publication 60189-1, Clause 3.4.3.

Marking:

This will be specified at the point of order.

Electrical Characteristics:

Capacitance Unbalance :

Except for the triple cables, pair-to-pair capacitance unbalance measurements shall be made at a suitable audio frequency, i.e. between 800 Hz and 3.0 kHz. All conductors other than those under test shall be connected to Earth.

The measurements shall be corrected as follows, lengths less than 100 m being considered as 100m. The measured values shall be divided by 1/2 (L/500 + (L/500)?

) where L is the length in metres of the cable under test.

Not more than 1% of the corrected capacitance unbalance measurements between any pairs shall exceed the values shown.

Insulation Resistance :

Insulation resistance measurements shall be made with not less than 500 V d.c. After steady electrification for one minute the insulation resistance measured between each conductor and the remaining conductors connected together shall be not less than the value specified .

After completion of the electrical tests the ends of the cable shall be sealed to prevent the ingress of water.

When required the cable end at which the colour scheme sequence follows a clockwise direction shall be marked Red. The other end shall be marked Green. Suitable self adhesive tape may be used for this purpose or end caps if used may be coloured.

NOTE: The resistance value is in accordance with IEC Publication 60344 for "Plain and coated copper conductors for low frequency cables and wires." with twisting and cabling lay factors greater than 16 for the 0.4mm and 0.5mm diameter conductors and for plain copper conductor for the 1.38mm diameter Earth conductor.

To permit various methods of providing this latter conductor the resistance value allows twisting and cabling factors greater than 16.
