Passage 1

In the United States, teaching is very important. If teachers don’t teach well, students complain. If many students do not understand, people think that the teacher doesn’t do a good job. The teacher has big responsibility to make sure students understand. In a sense, students are consumers and the teacher is offering services.

Students have the right to evaluate their teachers, and they usually do so at the end of each course. The evaluation includes lots of aspects of teaching. Such as explanation, preparation, using good example, answering question, and organization of classes.

Students are supposed to read required textbooks and recommended books before classes. Without reading them, they will find it very difficult to understand the class. Basic courses on doing research and writing papers are taught at the beginning of the program. They teach things very concretely(具体的) and clearly. Students are expected to apply what they have learnt to their studies.

Passage 2

Minh Pham was born in Vietnam. He left when he was 21 years old. Minh has been in America for almost two years. There is still much he does not understand about America.

Once Minh was in a grocery store. He saw an old man and an old woman. They wanted a box of cereal. The box was on a high shelf. They couldn’t reach it. Minh saw a stepladder. He got on the ladder and got the box. He handed it to the elderly couple. They thanked him.

“Where are your children?” asked Minh. “Why don’t they help you buy food?”

“Our children have their own lives, ” they said, “We like to be free to do as we like.” Minh doesn’t think this is right. In his country, children help their parents. Minh gave the elderly couple his phone number. He told them to call him if they needed help. One night they asked Minh to dinner, but they never asked him for help.

One day, Minh was walking with a Vietnamese friend. The two were going to a film.

Minh wanted to go to a restaurant first. Minh took his friend’s hand. He pulled him toward the restaurant. People on the street stared at Minh. In Vietnam, friends often hold hands. Minh found out that people in America are not used to men holding hands.

Minh Pham is going through a process known as resocialization. Socialization is the process through which a person learns to live in a society. Everyone goes through this process. Minh went through it when he lived in Vietnam. But the Vietnamese way of life is much different from the American way of life. When Minh came to America, he had to learn a new way of life. He had to learn how to live in a new society.

Minh has leaned a lot about American life in two years. He still has a lot to learn. The process of resocialization can take many years.

As we consider what makes one man better than the other, let’s look at two examples. The first example is a man who has a good job, a healthy body, and a loving family. His success is due to good decisions. He chose the correct subjects to study when he was at the university. Now that he’s out of school, he always schedules his time well so that he can get everything done at the proper time. He exercises and eats well, as he understands the benefits of this. In addition, in order to achieve happiness in the home, he spends time with his family and makes sure they all have when they need. On the other hand, the second man is something less than the successful person the first man is. What’s wrong with him?

Good sense is the ability to know what is true or right from what is not true or wrong. And some people might think that the second lacks good sense. However, the person who thinks this is mistaken. Actually, since everyone has the same amount of good sense, the first man does not have an advantage over the second in this respect. The second man has a good mind, and he has the ability to judge things well.

The second man runs into trouble, because he directs his thought along a different path.

He considers other things, different from the first man. The problem is that he does not apply his mind rightly, as does the first one. Thus, he is not capable of advancing further than he does.

When you consider what you want out of life, think about the results of your decisions. Apply your mind well so that good things will come about and so that you are not left regretting your actions.
