Directions: Read the following passages carefully and do the multiple-choice questions. (21 points)

Passage 1

In the United States, about 750,000 persons have suffered AIDS. More than one half of them have died.

But doctors say evidence (证据) also shows there is no reason for persons to become terrified (惊吓) by the disease. The AIDS virus is spread during sex with an infected partner, or by infected blood. But doctors say their studies show the disease is not spread through normal, close social activities.

A study by one research team was printed in the New England Journal (杂志) of Medicine. The doctors studied one-hundred-one family members who lived with AIDS and lived in crowded conditions. The family members shared many personal goods with the patients. These included toothbrushes, drinking glasses, beds, towels and toilets.

Doctors said only one family member — a five-year-old girl — got the AIDS virus. They note, however, that the girl's mother had the disease. They believe the girl probably was born with the virus. No other family member in the study got the AIDS virus or showed any signs of the disease.

The head of the study, Gerald Friedland, said if the disease is not easily spread in crowded homes, it also will not spread easily in factories, offices, schools and other public places. Doctor Friedland said the study also shows there is no reason to punish AIDS patients and to force them to live separately from other persons.

American health officials recently warned, however, that some health care workers should take special care. The report noted the AIDS virus is carried in blood and other body fluids. It said health care workers should put protective (保护性的) covers over their eyes and skin during medical operations, dental (牙科的) work, or other times when the patient may bleed.

In the United States, most AIDS patients are homosexual (同性恋的) men, people taking drugs who used infected needles (针头), and persons who received infected blood. More recent studies show the AIDS virus also can be spread during heterosexual (异性的) relations. It can spread either from the man to the woman, or from the woman to the man.

21. Doctors say there is no reason for people to be frightened about AIDS because _______.

A) it is not deadly

B) few people are infected with AIDS

C) the AIDS virus is not spread in everyday social activities.

D) the AIDS virus is not spread during sex

A) the AIDS is not spread by personal goods

B) women are more likely to get the AIDS virus than men

C) married men are less likely to get AIDS than unmarried ones

D) the AIDS virus is passed by drinking glasses

23. According to Doctor Friedland, there is no reason to _______.

A) stop meeting AIDS patients

B) stop living with AIDS patients

C) fear that AIDS can be passed from a mother to a baby

D) fear that the AIDS virus can be passed during sex

24. Health workers were warned to take special care when the patient bleeds because

_______.

A) AIDS can be passed by touching the patient's body

Passage 2

British writer Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction novel Childhood's End describes a future world society. The following is part of his description.

By the standards (标准)of all earlier ages, it was Utopia (a perfect society). Ignorance, disease, poverty, and fear had actually stopped existing. The memory of war was fading into the past as a bad dream disappears with the dawn; soon it would lie outside the experience of all living men.

With the energies of society going to construction sites, the face of the world had been remade. It was a new world. ... Production had become largely automatic: the robot (机器人) factories produced goods in such unending production lines that all the ordinary goods of life were practically free. Men worked in the interest of the comfort they wanted; or they did not work at all.

It was one world, although the old names of the old countries were still used. There

was no one on earth who could not speak English, who could not read, who was not within range of a television set, who could not visit the other side of the planet within twenty-four hours ...

Crime had almost disappeared. It had become both unnecessary and impossible. When no one lacks anything, there is no point in stealing.

One of the most obvious changes had been a slowing down of the mad speed that had so described (赋予……特征) the twentieth century. Life was freer than it had been for generations. It, therefore, had less competing for the few, but more peacefulness for the many. Western man had relearned — what the rest of the world had never forgotten — that there was nothing wrong with relaxing (休闲)as long as it did not fall into ordinary laziness.

Education was now much more thorough and much more popular. Few people left college before twenty —and that was merely the first stage, since they usually returned again at twenty-five for at least three more years, after travel and experience had broadened their minds. Even then, they would probably take review courses at times for the rest of their lives in the subjects that particularly interested them.

Another great change was the radical moving ability of the new society. Thanks to the efficiency of air transport, everyone was free to go anywhere at a moment's notice. There was more room in the skies than there had ever been on the roads, and the twenty-first century had repeated, to a large degree, the great American achievement of putting a nation on wheels. It had given wings to the world.

... There were plenty of specialists, but few creative workers broadening the areas of human knowledge. Curiosity remained, and the free time to enjoy it, but the heart had been taken out of original scientific research. It seemed fruitless to spend a life time searching for secrets that the great creators had probably found ages before.

26. In the last sentence of Paragraph 2 the word “it” refers to ________.

A)the memory of war B) the war C) the bad dream D) the past

27. The phrase “With the energies of society going to construction sites” (Para. 3) means

that ________.

A) when workers go to the building sites

B) when workers put all their efforts into building

C) when workers put all their energies into building factories

D) when workers utilize all the energies on the construction sites

28. Education in the future will be ________.

A) more interesting B) particularly interesting

C) more popular but less free D) more complete and free

29. Which of the following is NOT true of the future world according to the passage?

A) People will seldom experience war.

B) There will be no stealing.

C) English will be the language everyone speaks.

D) People will not be suffering from any kind of illness.

30. Scientists in the future will ________.

A) keep curiosity only

B) look for free time

C) do basic scientific research

D) not search for secrets discovered ages before

Passage 3

Personal computers and the Internet (互联网) give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail (电子邮件) makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren't automatically much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she'd been born before electronic (电子的) mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun — see a great film, perhaps — and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience (方便), and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don't eliminate (排除) any of the old ways.

Youth of Today —No savings, no pension, huge debts — Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care. It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters. Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. “The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,” concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers “Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by https://www.sodocs.net/doc/542734116.html,. In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market. Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 “do not consider their future financial position”, according to research from Accenture H R Services. Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: “For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.” Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. “Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,” says Mintel. A car is seen as “vital” by 64 percent
