A book report about Pride and Prejudice

The <> is a book telling that Bannate treat married the daughter of five different treatments .Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, This is a really love story ,but above love . The story let me know a truth that the true love is based on two people who is respect each other . This story also tells another truth about the society at that years .which is a unfair society ,which is a Noble in power’s society .

Mrs Bannate has five daughters .The older is called Jane , who is loved by Mr Bingly . The second daughter named Elizabeth and she was loved by Mr Darcy who is a very rich and pride man . Elizabeth and Darcy is the novel’s hero and heroine. The third daughter is Mary and she isn’t as beautiful as her elder sisters , but she is knowledgeable and a little self-important . The two young sister have a very strong vanity . So the five different characters let the story go on .

In fact, I didn't understand the story at the first timeI read it. I didn't know why it called Pride and

Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice. I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But after watching the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong.

I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time. I like it so just like it, if not so just not. I'm a person thinking by heart not by brain. What is worse, I actually didn't think it's wrong. I thought everyone is all like that.Everyone has his special way to cognize the world. So it's individuality, not prejudice. But I think something is wrong. Though everyone can judge in the way he likes, he can't ignore other ones. You can like what you like and hate what you hate, but you should be objective when you meet external world. I think it means that you should consider things roundly, not just partial. Am I right?

The main subject in the novel is stated in the first sentence of the novel: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." In this statement, Jane has cleverly done three things: she has declared that the main subject of the novel will be courtship and marriage, she has established the humorous tone of the novel by taking a simple subject to elaborate and to speak intelligently of, and she has prepared the reader for a chase in the novel of either a husband in search of a wife, or a women in pursuit of a husband. The first line also defines Jane's book as a piece of literature that connects itself to the 18th century period. Pride and Prejudice is 18th century because of the emphasis on man in his social environment rather than in his individual conditions. The use of satire and wit, a common form of 18th century literature, also contributes to label the book as 18th century. However, because Jane Austen had allowed personal feelings of the characters to be expressed in her work, she can also be classified as Romantic. In the figure of Elizabeth, Jane Austen shows passion attempting to find a valid

mode of existence in society. Passion and reasons also comes together in the novel to show that they are complementary of marriage. The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. (Actually she is a pedan t.) Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I watch the movie, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this story is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.

In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in s ome

people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help th inking: can money determine everything?

The answer surely is wrong .I think there will have true love in the world ,Like Elizabeth and Darcy . Love is the true feeling in the two person .Don’t judge love by money , by status .The love don’t have honor and downtrodden ,the love is fair . So keep the right feelings about love ,you will find your true

love ,likeElizabeth and Darcy .

The distance is nothing ,when one has a motive. Mrs.Bennet’s eyes sparkled with pleasure. We must trespass a litter longer on your kindness. Mrs.Bennet was profuse in her acknowledgements. I often tell my other girls they are nothing to her. That is my idea of good breading;and those persons who fancy themselves very important and never open their mouths , quiet mistake the matter. A lady’s imagination is very rapid;it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony . Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. He is ate up with pride. Upon my word ! Affectation of candour is common enough –one meets it everywhere. But to be candid without ostentation or design—to take the good of everybody’s character and make it still better , and say nothing of the bad—belongs to you alone Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Everything nourishes what is strong already. She had high animal spirits, and a sort of self-consequence. The day passed much as the day before had done.

Mr Darcy: Miss Elizabeth. I have struggled in vain and can bear it no longer. These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings only to see you. I have fought against judgement, my family's expectation, the inferiority of your birth, my rank. I will put them aside and ask you to end my agony. Miss Elizabeth: I don't understand. Mr Darcy: I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honour of accepting my hand. Miss Elizabeth: Sir, I appreciate the struggle you have been through, and I am very sorry to have caused you pain. It was unconsciously done. Mr Darcy: Is this your reply? Miss Elizabeth: Yes, sir. Mr Darcy: Are you laughing at me? Miss Elizabeth: No. Mr Darcy: Are you rejecting me? Miss Elizabeth: I'm sure the feelings which hindered your regard will help you overcome it. Mr Darcy: Might I ask why with so little civility I am thus repulsed? Miss Elizabeth: I might enquire why you told me you liked me against your better judgement? If I was uncivil, then that is some excuse. But you know I have other reasons. Mr Darcy: What reasons? Miss Elizabeth: Do you think anything might tempt me to accept the man who has ruined the happiness of a most beloved sister? Do you deny that you separated a young couple who loved each other, exposing your friend to censure for caprice and my sister to derision for disappointed hopes, involving them both in acute misery? Mr Darcy: I do not deny it. Miss Elizabeth: How could you do it? Mr Darcy: I believed your sister indifferent to him. I realised his attachment was deeper than hers.

Pride and Prejudice By Jane Austen (An Excerpt from Chapter One) 第一句:"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of wife."*在本文中"It is a truth universally acknowledged"在七个译文中,大多译为“一条举世公认的真理”。 However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters."*在这七则译文中,文字上各有不同的修辞,修饰。 My dear Mr Bennet',said his lady to him one day, have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?"*在译文一中,译者把“My dear Mr Bennet"译成“我的好老爷”,个人觉得用的不是很恰当,“老爷”这一词太偏中式化了;而在二三四五六七中,则均译为“亲爱的本内特先生”,给人一种太正式化的印象,夫妻之间的谈话更应亲密些;译文五译得比较好些;而在叙述句中,"said his lady to him one day"译文一四五把此译文放在了第一句,其他的则放在原句位置,个人认为放在句首更加贴切。 Mr Bennet replied that he had not."*这句简单的译文七句也各不相同。" But it is,returned she.For Ms Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."*译文"But it is"一至七中,译文二三译为“的确租出去了”;译文三则“可确是租出去了”’译文四则为“但的确已经租出去了”;文五则为“当真租出去了”;译文六与七则译为“确实租出去了”。

When Prid e Encounters Prejudice, Everything is Different Ⅰ: Jane Austen (16 December 1775 –18 July 1817), one of the most famous novelists in Britain, was born in Hampshire. She lived in the villages throughout her life. Although there were 2 suitors, she never married. She finished her first novel when she was only 21 years old. This work’s name was First Impressions (After amending, it had a new name: Pride and Prejudice). Ⅱ: Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and marriage. Mr. Bennet was an English gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his wife. He had five daughters: the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia. Because of the law, after the death of Mr. Bennet, their house would be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met. This family's future happiness and security dependent on the 5 daughters’ marriages. One day, a rich gentleman Mr. Bingley came and rented a large house in this country. His sisters and his best friend Mr. Darcy came together. Love was soon in the air for one of the 5 sisters, while another had a prejudice against Mr. Darcy. Then they experienced many things, but at last, Mr. Bingley married the oldest sister Jane, and Elizabeth overcame the prejudice and married to Mr. Darcy. It’s a happy ending. Ⅲ: Although Mr. Song said the book report should be objective, but I had to say this book touched my heart d eeply. The women written by Jane Austen still live in our world. Some like Charlotte Lucas, they choose a marriage without love just for money and a stable life. Some like Lydia, they are so frivolous and foolish that they flatter themselves that they can do anything well. Some like Mary, they are not good-looking but think themselves are the best ones. They look down every man while they are eager for a man’s love in their hearts. Some like Jane, they are kind and beautiful, but they are also reserved and feminine。They don’t have courage to fight for the love of their own but wait here in vain. And there are also some girls like innocent Ms Darcy or like vainglorious and superficially clever Bingley sisters. Of course, some girls like Elizabeth, they are clever, gentle, open-minded, and they know their own hearts. They never give in even facing a difficult situation. They are good ladies who are worth loving and cherishing. Jane Austen’s wisdom always appeals to me, which makes me smile through the whole reading.

Pride and Prejudice 1.主题(Theme) -----Theme of Love In Pride and Prejudice, love is not a necessary component of marriage. At the same time, it is shown to be a completely special emotion that is available only for intelligent, mature adults. ------Theme of Marriage The novel shows us the miserable marriage of the Bennets and mercenary marriages of Charlotte and Lydia, And with the marriages of Jane and Elizabeth front and center, the novel does allow room for good partnership as well. ------Theme of Wealth Wealth is crucially important in Pride and Prejudice. There is almost no conversation about potential spouses that doesn't also calculate the annual income that the pair might have to live on. ------Theme of Society and Class Darcy's character arc is to become the ultimate gentleman –he starts out wealthy, aristocratic, and good-hearted. Conversely, although Wickham seems to have the outer polish of an aristocrat, he is proven to be thoroughly ungentlemanly. ------Theme of Women and Femininity The novel is actually concerned with the plight of the middle-class, single woman. Most of the women we see here are caught in a bind. Pride and Prejudice offers us a look into this rather intensely feminine world of courting, marriage decisions, and social realities. ------Theme of Family We all have families that embarrass us to some extent, but the Bennet family takes it to a whole new level, creating endless problems for the two eldest Bennet daughters. the joy and pain of love, the pursuit of happiness and the infulence of social opinion.

Reading after Pride and Prejudice Recently I have been reading a novel called Pride and Prejudice, which was written by Jane Austen. Although I haven’t finished it yet, I still have something to write. The writer, Jane Austen, was an English woman. She was born in Steventon, Hampshine, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and the seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. Austin didn’t go to regular schools, but she read many literary works at her parents’ guidance. She started writing about the age of 20, and published six novels. Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1816) are the best-known books of them. Virginia Woolf called her “the most perfect artist among women”. Most of her novels were all adapted into movies and successful in the world. For living in a small country town, contacting the medium and small landlords, pastor as well as their quiet and comfortable living environment, there were no significant social contradictions in her works. She described a truthful picture of her world, especially the marriage and love between gentlemen and ladies by her meticulous feminine observation. The style of her works is humorous and rich in comic conflicts, so many readers love them. This type of novels not only at that time attracted broad readers, today; it still

(It is a true universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.)

Jane Austin’s View of Marriage Reflected in Pride and Prejudice Introduction Pride and Prejudice is one of the most famous works of Jane Austin. The content of Pride and Prejudice based on people’s daily life in rural area at her age. It depicted marriages of five couples—Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet, Charlotte and Mr. Collins, Lydia and Wickham, Jane and Bingley and Elizabeth and Darcy. The work showed middle class women’s attitude toward marriage. Jane Austin’s view of marriage also reflected in it. I.Life experience of Jane Austin The setting of Pride and Prejudice is exactly English upper-middle class of Austin’s own time in rural area. Marriage problems described in the work are reflection of the reality. A.Historical background of Jane Austin Jane Austin lived in the turn of eighteenth and nineteenth century. At that time, men were in the dominant place, and people were stratified according to wealth and family clan. For women, inheriting a big amount of heritage or marring a rich husband were two ways to promote social status. However, men had the absolute advantage to succeed the heritage. So middle-class women committed themselves to finding a well-heeled husband in consideration of life condition. Jane Austin was born in a comfortable family in a small town. She never attended school, but received good family education from her father and teacher. After the death of her father, her mother, sister and she live by little heritage of her father. B.Romance of Jane Austin When Austin was twenty years old, she fell in love with a poor young man, a lawyer. Both Austin and the lawyer’s family expected them to marry a person from a wealth family. They were forced to departure by the pressure of family and never met again. In Austin’s whole life, she never married. She poured all her feelings into her novels. She died at a young age because of bad health. II.Analysis of marriage of five couples in Pride and Prejudice A.Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet The combining of Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet were the most common type of marriage in middle-class. It can be inferred that they married for benefits—money ends. Mr. Bennet was humorous and tactful. He was good at satirizing Mrs. Bennet in different ways. He paid little attention to his five daughters. In contrast, Mrs. Bennet was foolish. She dedicated to gossip. And the sole business of her life was to marry off all her daughters. At the beginning of the novel, Mrs. Bennet rushed home and excitedly announced
