Minh Pham was born in Vietnam. He left his native country when he was 21 years old. Minh has been in America for almost two years. There is still much he does not understand about America.

Once Minh was in a supermarket. He saw an old man and an old woman. They wanted a box of cereal(麦片). The box was on a high shelf. The man and woman couldn't reach it. Minh saw a stepladder. He got on the ladder and got the box. He handed it to the elderly couple. They thanked him.

“Where are your children?” asked Minh. “Why don't they help you buy food?”

“Our children have their own lives,” said the man and woman. “We like to be independent. ” Minh doesn't think this is right. In his country, children help their parents. An American researcher has developed a simple device to help people stop snoring. The device limits the movements of the tissue(软组织)that caused the disliked sound. Snoring is a common problem. It may prevent a person from getting enough sleep. It may also prevent enough oxygen from reaching the heart and lungs during the sleep. But for most people snoring affects relations with the other person who must sleep in the same room.

Snoring happens when the sleeping person breathes with the mouth open. In the back of the mouth the tissues surrounding the entrance of the throat is soft. As the person breathes, the movement of the air around the soft tissues caused them to move or vibrate(振动). This tissue movement causes the sound we call snoring. A number of possible solutions have been suggested. Some devices keep the mouth shut. They forced the patient to breathe only through the nose. A medical operation is also possible. Other devices listen for the sound of snoring and then wake the patient. The new antisnoring device was developed by a dentist, George Wagner of the Indian University School of Dentistry. He developed a piece of plastic that fits up against the inside of the mouth. The device keeps the soft tissues from vibrating and making the snoring noise. It was worn only at night. Doctor Wagner said several patients report that the simple device has ended their

snoring problem.

A. It keeps the patient’s mouth shut.

B. It keeps the soft tissue from vibrating.

C. It provides the patient with enough oxygen.

D. It wakes the patient up as soon as he or she snores.

If I had known then what I know now I would have taken my father’s advice when I was 18 and I had to choose my major at university. He told me to study outside Italy where there were more possibilities to find a job once I finished university. But I said no, scared of living alone in a different country with a different culture, with a different language, and above all, far from my family and friends. So I decided to go to university in Italy and I chose the one in Rome, my city, which is one of the most ancient universities in the world, studying “Communication Science” because it was the most common and the most fashionable major six years ago(and still is now …)At that age, I wanted to become a sports journalist, but with the passing time, my opinions and my ideas started changing and I understood that I didn’t like my choice. At that time, I understood that at 18 years old, everyone feels mature to decide about his own future. Everyone thinks that the advice that parents try to give is wrong and we are able to decide alone, maybe just with the help of our friends who are in the same situation. This is the worst thought that we can think. However, I graduated last December with the pride of my parents and I decided, with their help, to come to Toronto and study English. Here I am living the best experience I have ever lived. I often think: “If I had known that living alone in a different country and studying something I like was so nice and interesting when I was 18, I would have listened to what my father told me six years ago. ” I try to regret nothing about my choices I have made in my past, but I just think that now I am mature to ask my parents and to listen to them because they have more experience and they know better than me what is right and what is wrong.

64. What can we learn about the writer from the passage?

A. He went to Toronto in order to become a sports journalist.

B. He studied English when he was in a university in Rome.

C. He followed his parents’ advice when choosing a university.

D. He is enjoying his stay in Toronto and his study of English.

65. The underlined word mature in the passage means ______.

A. good and ripe

B. confident enough

C. carefully decided

D. having a developed mind

66. All the following are the reasons why the writer chose a university at home except that ______.

A. he might meet cultural shock

B. he couldn’t speak a second language

C. he wanted to study Communication Science

D. he didn’t want to be separated from his family and friends

67. From his own experience the writer tries to tell us that _____.

A. parents’ advice is worth taking

B. he still prefers to ask his friends for help

C. he doesn’t regret about the choices he made

D. Communication Science is still fashionable now

D

I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. If it weren't for my job I would immediately move out for the open spaces and go back to nature.

Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in many tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous as they are shut up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated(孤立的)from the rest of the world. Strangely enough, in the past the residents of one street all knew each other, but nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don't even say hello to each other.

Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the residents of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in cities. There's little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go a long way to the nearest large town. The city people who leave for the country often can’t bear the stillness and quiet there.

What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city gives people a feeling of isolation, and constant noise can nearly drive you mad. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of things, and that life doesn't come to an end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found a compromise(折衷)between the two: leave cities and move to villages within commuting(可乘公交车往返的)distance of large cities. It sounds great!

68. It seems that the writer prefers to live in the country mainly because ______.

A. the city is somehow polluted

B. the country folks are more friendly

C. one can get better sleep in the country

D. it’s hard for people to find jobs in the city

69. The biggest disadvantage of living in the country is that ______.

A. life there is inconvenient

B. shopping is almost impossible

C. you can not see a movie or a show

D. life comes to an end at half past nine

70. The underlined word “binds” in the third paragra ph is similar in meaning to ______.

A. attracts

B. drives

C. prevents

D. unites

四、任务型阅读(每空格1个单词,不得使用文章中的单词)

What’s the constant and just thing in the world? It is the time positively. Time witnesses everything and treats them fairly. Whether you are rich or poor, beautiful or ugly, everyone is equal to get and lose.

“Time” says the proverb “is money”. This means that every moment well-spent may put some money into your pockets. If our time is usefully employed, it will either turn out some useful piece of work which will fetch its price in the market, or it will add to our experience and increase our capacities so that we are able to make money when the proper opportunity comes. There can thus be no doubt that time is convertible(可改变的) into money. Let those who think nothing of wasting time remember that an hour misspent is equal to loss of a bank-notice; and then they will probably think twice before they allow for the loss of any part of the time.

Moreover, our life is nothing more than our time. To kill time is therefore a form of suicide. We are shocked when we think of death, and we spare no pains, no trouble, and expense to preserve life. But we are too often indifferent to the loss of an hour or of a day, forgetting that our life is the sum total of the days and of the hours we live. A day or an hour wasted is therefore so much life forfeited(丧失). Let us bear this in mind, and waste of time will appear to us in the light of a crime as culpable(有罪的) as suicide itself.

There is a third consideration which will also tend to warn us against loss of time. Our life is a brief span measuring some sixty or seventy years in all, but nearly one half of this has to be spent over our meals, dressing and undressing, making journey on land and voyages by sea, celebrating religious and social festivities and so on. Now if all these years were to be deducted(减除) from the term over which our life extends, we shall find about only fifteen or twenty years at our disposal(任意使用) for active work.

To sum up, as the pace of modern life continues to accelerate, the time at our disposal is quite

limited. We should make full use of our time to fulfill what is useful to us.

书面表达范文

Yesterday ,I read a report in a newspaper that a lot of fresh graduates born after 1980s rush into marriage .

The reasons for young people’s rushing into marriage are listed as follows .First of all , It is obvious that our society has become open since the 1980s ,when more and more

people feel free to pursue their own way of life .What’s more , an early marriage makes it

possible for them to build a stable life more quickly ,thus leaving them time to concentrate

on their work .

As far as I am concerned ,I am strongly against early marriages. Firstly , they don’t have enough life experience and economic backgrounds .Secondly ,they lack mutual

understanding .To make the matter worse ,most of them are the only child of their family

and are usually self-centered ,therefore ,they value their personal feelings more than the

family responsibility, which most likely leads to divorce.
