主题:对Unit 8名片(Business Cards)知识点的补充

内容:

1. 概述

名片(business card或name card)是现代商务活动和社会交往中必不可少的工具,它既可作为自我介绍的重要手段,又可长期保存以备日后联系之用。目前我国涉外人员使用的名片多以中英文对照形式出现,以下是一张普通商务名片的实例。

一张典型的名片一般由七个部分组成。

(1) 姓名(Name):一般使用汉语拼音,也有混合使用英文名+汉语姓的。

(2) 称谓(Title):一般放在姓名后面,可能是官衔(Rank)、职位(Position)、职业(Job)、职称(Technical Title)、荣誉称号(Honorary Title)等。

(3) 公司(Company)

(4) 部门(Department)

(5) 地址(Address):包括邮政编码。

(6) 其他联系资料,包括电话(Tel)、电子信箱(Email)、网址(Website)等。2. 地址的英译

名片的主要功能是联系,所以要在名片上写详细的家庭或单位通讯地址,这是必不可少的一项内容。例如:

住址:浙江省台州市黄岩区天长路18号201室

翻译成英文是

Address: Room 201, 18 Tianchang Road, Huangyan District, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province

对于上例,翻译时有几点需要注意:

(1) 中文地址的排列顺序由大到小,即国、省、市、区、路、号;英文地址则刚好相反,是由小到大的,即号、路、区、市、省、国。

(2) 地名部分应使用汉语拼音,且需连写,如Huangyan不宜写成Huang Yan。

(3) 各地址单元间要加逗号隔开。

行政区的一些常见英译:

(1) 国家(State):中华人民共和国(the People’s Republic of China; P. R. China; P. R. C.)。

(2) 省级(Provincial Level):省(Province);自治区(Autonomous Region);直辖市(Municipality Directly under the Central Government,简称Municipality);特别行政区(Special Administration Region, SAR)。

(3) 地级(Prefectural Level):自治州(Autonomous Prefecture);市(City)。

3. 单位及部门名称的英译

单位及部门名称在英语中属于专有名词范畴,其语用特征要求专词专用,所以一个单位只能使用一种译名。如“中国银行”英译为the Bank of China,缩写为B.O.C.,不能作任何更改——按字面意思译成the Chinese Bank或the China Bank都是不妥当的。

按此原则,在翻译单位名称时,应首先查阅有关资料,确定是否有普遍接受的定译。尤其是政府机构的译名,更应采用国家有关部门的对外正式名称,绝不能按字面即兴翻译,以致出现一个机构数个译名的混乱状况。

按照英语语法,专有名词的词首字母应大写,但是像of, the, and等虚词一般小写,如“黄岩区人民政府”英译为the People’s Government of Huangyan District。

单位名称中包含地名或人名的,应用汉语拼音,如上例中的“黄岩”应音译为Huangyan,而不能采用意译。

4. 称谓语的英译

我国行政机关等级较严格,各类机构管理人员及从业人员的称谓也纷繁复杂,大部分国内已有普遍认同的定译,如“省长”—Governor,“总经理”—General Manger。但是,还有一部分是各译各的,大家各执己见,如“董事长”,有的译成Chairman,有的译成President;另外一小部分,大概是因为平时用得少,翻译时很难相互比较。

一张名片由于空间有限,英文采用缩略形式很必要。一般规则为:

独立单词——可以选取其前四或三个字母作为其缩写词,如University—Univ.;也可去掉单词中的元音字母,由纯辅音字母组成其缩写词,如Building—Bldg.。

组合词——最简单的方法是选择各个组成部分的首字母组合成缩写形式,如Bank of China—B. O. C.;但是大多数情况下夹在其中的of, and, the等虚词成分

(2) 人名按汉语拼音,写成Guan Kangren

(3) “厂长”可译为Director

(4) “厂址”可译为Factory Add.或直接写Add.

(5) “教育”和“西南”都采用拼音,即Jiaoyu Road, Xinan Town

(6) “电话”——Tel.,“手机”——M.

Achieving a tone to suit the business audience Good readers in the business world know how to choose their words. The communication must achieve its aim or time and energy are wasted. If you want to be a good writer and speaker, good grammar and spelling are necessary but not enough. Your words must be chosen with care and tested for their suitability for each particular writing task. Good writers can write upwards, horizontal or downwards without offending their readers. They use the most suitable words for their position and particular business. The idea of tone is very important to the business communicator. Since readers can be insulted or offended not by the message but be the manner of expression, an otherwise perfect memo or letter could quite possibly cause a breakdown in communication.
