雅思写作按文体可以分为两类：议论文argumentation，和说明文report。

议论文argumentation：顾名思义，是以议论为主的作文，主要考察学生的思考和辩论能力。在雅思写作考试里，这类作文占据较大比例，平均出现频率高达70%-80%。雅思议论型作文，考生不但要说自己的选择如何正确，通常也要指出对方观点如何不足。这样，文章才有说服力。

雅思议论文常见题目有四种：

1 Discuss both views and give your own opinion. 这类题目，往往题干中对于一个现象有两个不同的观点，你需要将两个观点都讨论，不能缺少任意一个，否则扣分。最后要给出你的个人观点。这类题型在议论文中出现频率很高，占到40%-50%左右。

比如：

2 Do you agree or disagree. 这类题目，往往题干中只有一个观点，然后让考生去评价这一观点，做出个人选择。或者支持它或者反对它。不能既支持又反对，这样会扣分。这类题型在议论文中出现的频率也很高，占到40%-50%左右

3 What is your opinion. 这类题目，与第一种类型一样，往往题干中有两个不同的观点，虽然提问中没要求对两者都讨论，但同样一个也不能少。但这类题目的不同之处在于，往往这两方观点可以中和，或折中。两方观点或者都太片面，或者彼此可以重叠。这类题目在议论文中出现的频率不高，占到10%左右

4 Advantage and disadvantage 或positive and negative phenomenon.较之前三个，这类作文难度明显较低，往往要求考生讨论“是利大于弊”还是“弊大于利”。这类题目在议论文中往

往出现于G类作文，在A类作文中出现的频率不高，占到5%左右。

雅思说明文：这类作文不考察学生就某现象或某观点的态度，而是旨在考察学生对某现象的成因，以及解决办法或影响进行书写。所以，这类作文考查的是学生的问题分析能力和解决能力。学生在写作文的时候，只需要按题干要求，进行相关展开即可。
