M: Very well. Have you heard of heart transplants?

W: Yes. A heart transplant is that you take a heart from one person and put it into the body of another.

M: That’s correct. Well, I do brain transplants. Now we have several brains in stock. You can have a sanitation worker’s brain for $5 000.

W: What about a university professor’s brain?

M: $20 000.

W: This is interesting. Is that the most expensive brain?

M: No. You can have a judge’s brain for $50 000.

W: That sounds very interesting. And is that the most expensive brain?

The earthworm is a useful animal. Out of the ground, it is food for other animals. In the ground it makes rich soil for fields and gardens. Earthworms dig tunnels that make the soil loose and make it easy for air and water to reach the roots of plants. These tunnels help keep the soil well drained.

Earthworms drag leaves, grass, and flowers into their holes. When this plant material rots, it makes the soil richer. No other animal is so useful in building up good surface soil. It is calculated that in one year fifty thousand earthworms carry about eighteen tons of soil to the surface of an acre of land. One worm may add three quarters of a pound of earth to surface land.
