Maternity leave shake-up is a £2bn headache say businesses Maternity leave has been extended to nine months in UK

Businesses in UK claim reforms of maternity leave which came into force yesterday will saddle them with a £2billion bill.

The period of paid leave to which new mothers are entitled has been extended from six to nine months.

Lobbyists say this is good for working women - but bad for business. The£2billion cost will come from recruiting and training workers to cover new mothers' longer absences.

Family groups, however, welcomed Labour's extension of maternity leave, which they say will encourage women to stay home with their children for longer.

The Forum of Private Business said it was worried about the changes. Chief Executive Nick Goulding said: 'The extension of maternity leave is a major concern for many small businesses.

"It would appear that little thought has been given to the financial impact for businesses who can't easily find a replacement for the absent worker."

Small firms which employ fewer than 49 people account for 99 per cent of all UK businesses. Mr Goulding said these companies will struggle the most.

The average cost of filling a job vacancy is £10,000, according to recruitment consultancy Angela Mortimer.

This includes the 'hard' costs, such as placing a job advert, and the 'hidden' costs, such as time spent conducting interviews.

Ashley Williams, a director of Angela Mortimer, warned:

"Business leaders are frequently unaware of the true costs involved in recruiting new people.

"Intangible costs such as time spent sifting through CVs need to be taken into account on top of the more obvious expenses."

Angela Mortimer

Bank customers queue round the block

as cash machine pays out

DOUBLE their money

Once the word was out, there was no stopping them. A British cash machine became a big hit this week after it started paying out twice as much money as it should.

The ATM, outside a supermarket in the city of Hull in northern England, began spewing out double the money Tuesday afternoon and continued doing so for several hours, drawing a crowd of hundreds eager to cash in on the mistake.

At one stage, the queue for the cash machine was a 100-strong - with many making multiple withdrawals.

"They were walking away with huge wads of cash and big smiles on

their faces," said a witness.

"And people were calling their mates up and telling them to get down there."

The crowd began gathering at the store in Hull at around 5pm on Tuesday and finally dispersed at 8pm when the faulty ATM ran out of notes.

One man, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was driving past when I saw a huge queue at the cash machine.

"I parked up and learned that it was paying out double. I joined the queue and when I finally got to the front, I drew out £200, but it gave me £400.

"The statement said I only drew out £200. I don't know whether I will have to pay it back."

Payzone, a company that administers ATMs, would not comment in detail on the incident but said it appeared one of its machines had malfunctioned.

Police said those who had benefited could face charges but only if the operator complained.

Most debit cards have a daily cash withdrawal limit of £300 - meaning that those lucky enough to use the haywire machine were able to take out a maximum of £600.

Lloyd's insures winemaker's nose for $8 million

The Lloyd's of London insurance market has insured the nose of a leading wine maker and taster for 5 million euros ($7.9 million), covering the Bordeaux producer against the loss of his nose and sense of smell.

Lloyd's is famous for creating policies for giant corporations but also

for insuring celebrity limbs, from Fred Astaire's legs to the hands of Rolling Stones' Keith Richards.

It said on Tuesday that Ilja Gort, the Dutch owner of Chateau de la Garde in Bordeaux, producer of Tulipe Wines, said his nose could distinguish millions of different scents and was essential to guarantee the quality of his wines.

"The nose and sense of smell of a winemaker are as important as the fingers of a chef," Jonathan Thomas, lead underwriter at Watkins Syndicate who co-insured the policy.

Lloyds worked with Allianz Nederland and British reinsurance broker Benfield to create the policy, co-insured by Watkins.

Gort's will not be the first nose insured by Lloyd's, which famously insured U.S. comedian Jimmy Durante's trademark. It also insures the taste buds of restaurateur Egon Ronay.

Here's the #1 question I get from women readers: How can I have a successful career and a happy family? Many of these readers already are successful in their careers. What they're really asking is how to also have a happy family. This is a very new question for us. For centuries, women's careers were our family. Our career was 'caregiver.' We lived to please our fathers, our husbands, our sons. In return for our service, we received a lifetime guarantee of stability and security. But today that bargain has vanished. We're still doing our part by serving our families. But for many if not most, marriage now is a source of deep insecurity. Most young marriages now end in divorce 57%。 No one enters a marriage thinking, 'Someday we'll hate each other,' but that's been precisely the experience of most of China's born-post-1980 generation. The Ministry of Civil Affairs reports that by 2005, the divorce rate for this generation already had reached 57 percent. For the first time in Chinese history, a generation of children now is growing up in broken households. Women often suffer greatly during divorce, but at least we can take charge of our lives and move on. Our children, on the other hand, cannot. When divorce occurs, they're victims in the truest sense. The impacts on children of divorce can last a lifetime. I happen to know this first-hand, since I was born in America in 1969, and it was in the 1970s that divorce first exploded in America as is happening now in China. My generation was the first to grow up as the children of divorce.

Looking Back To Look Ahead. America's Careening Foreign Policy. Bill Clinton Assumes Office In White House As Us President. Olympics Begin In Style; Swimmer Takes 1st Gold.

Lewis, Xie Voted World's Top Two. Emperor's Visit A Milestone In Bilateral Ties. Quake Death Toll Tops 5000. Young Wheelers, Big Dealers. After The Boom Everything Is Gloom.

On this day in 1920 the United States voted not to join the League of Nations that had emerged out of the ‘never again’tide of feeling that accompanied the end of the First World War. Although President Woodrow Wilson had been appalled at the scale of human suffering he had seen, the increasingly isolationist tendencies of the US meant that the first organisation with an international peace agenda began its life without one of its potentially most powerful members. One of the early supporters of the League of Nations was Vera Brittain, whose classic memoir of the Great War, ‘Testament of Youth’, was released as a film on 16 January. Having read a review that found it sentimental I went to see it on Friday with mixed expectations. The film is primarily, like Brittain’s book, a commemoration of the lives and deaths of the young men whom she had loved and lost rather than an attempt to make a contemporary point. But the act of remembrance itself, can be a subversive and not just a sentimental act. Urged to forget and move on by those around her, Vera determined not only that she would not forget these young men, but that she would not forget what she herself had witnessed and learned as a V oluntary Nurse whilst at a military hospital in étaples. Confronted there with a hut full of German wounded Vera recognized, with shock, that these enemies were young men too, bleeding, suffering and dying far from home; the memory led to her initial support for the League of Nations, and in the face of the growing militarism of the 1930s, eventually to become one of the 20th century’s leading pacifists. As this month’s events in France continue to reverberate, and the release of the Guantanamo diaries raises inconvenient moral questions about western values, what we do with our memories is a key question. ‘Forgive and forget’is often not realistic, ignores the claims of justice, and is simply not safe, whilst the memory driven cycle of defending our own ‘high ground’runs the risk of causing more and more damage and of failing to see how our attitudes and actions –whoever we are - also need scrutiny. An alternative way to remember is offered by Miroslav V olf, a Croat theologian, writing out of the Balkan conflict of the 1990s. What he offers is a twofold way of remembering –a remembrance of harm done to us and ours that honours real anxiety and protects the vulnerable, but a remembrance which also honours the humanity of our enemies –a remembrance that restrains our desire for vengeance, opens up space for the scrutiny of our own actions, and constrains us to work for the
