As I drank my morning tea, I thought I felt a headache coming on. Yes, there it was, a dull throb(跳动)just behind my eyes. Maybe I should go back to bed until it subside d(消退). As I put the dishes in the sink, it seemed that my muscles were beginning to ache. Or was the ache in my joints? That could

mean I was coming down with the flu. (承上启下句)Everyone I knew had the flu this year. Why should I be the one to escape(免于)it? I absolutel y should be in bed.

I shuffled(拖步走)back to bed, wiggled(扭动)under the covers and shut my eyes. Another couple of hours of sleep would be so nice, but I was already completely awake. I ought to get up. But no, there was that headache and the beginning of a sniffle(吸鼻子). Better get the tissues.

The morning was moving along and so was m y reading. Another twent y pages and I was stretching. I should try to crack(找到解决…方法)the report I was working on. I should at least get up and do the wash. What if I was contagious? I certainly didn't want to spread any germs. The wash could wait. My family was resourceful enough to scrounge(索取)clothing for the next day.

Maybe I wasn't actually getting the flu. I didn't reall y want to be sick. To be truthful, all I wanted was a little time off. I needed to nurture(养育)m yself away from people, chores(琐事), career and the outside world. Did I have to wait to be sick to do that?

I poured half the bottle of bath gel into the streaming water and added a heart y(大的) handful of chamomile(春黄菊)bath salts. Then I lit a vanilla-scented (香草味的) candle and gingerl y stepped into the bathtub. With a grateful sigh, I immerse d myself in my homemade spa. I heard the phone ring somewhere off in the distance and smiled.

It is funny how the aches subsided in the heat of the tub. They just slipped away with the last of the bubbles down the drain. My head felt just fine, the throb replaced by a sense of well-being.

By late afternoon, I was back at it(恢复原样), refreshed physicall y, mentally and emotionally. And rather than feeling helpless, I felt empowered.

I had given m yself permission to listen and respond to m y needs, to care for myself the way I tended to(注意,留心)my family. I didn't need the crutch(拐杖) of illness to justify a rest. It was such a simple awareness, but then isn't it the simple things that set us free?

Nothing takes its toll on the body(对身体有害)like stress. 1 In addition to the mental damage that it causes, stress is also linked to many diseases, including cancer. 2 Unfortunately, in today's world, most of us are experiencing a stressful life with no way to get out of it - or so we think.

If you are 3 one of the many people who want to alleviate your stress, you can learn some simple techniques to help you 4 get out of the vicious cycle of leading a stressful life. Your stressful life does not just affect you, but everyone around you. It affects your relationships as well as any children or co-workers. Most of all, it can actually make you 5 physically ill.

Do you reall y want to go 6 through the rest of your life feeling "stressed out"? Do you like the idea of feeling "out of control" and that everything in life is a trial? Perhaps it is time for you to confront this situation and seek help to restore some sort of balance in your life and break 7 fre e from this cycle.

There are many facets to stress. Stress manifests itself(显露)in many different ways and can be 8 either self-induced(自诱导的)or something that occurs in life. We can never eliminate stress from our lives, as stressful situations are part o f life. However, we can learn to react to stress in a 9 positive manner and take control of the situation 10 rather thanallowing the stress to remain in control.

Self-Esteem and Body Image

I'm fat. I'm too skinny. I'd be happy if I were taller, shorter, had curl y hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles, longer legs.

Do any of these statements sound familiar?(承上句)Are you used to putting yourself down(贬低;使出丑)? If so, you're not alone. As a teen, you're going through a ton of(大量的)changes in your body. And as your body changes, so does your image of yourself. Lots of people have trouble adjusting, and this can affect their self-esteem.

Why Are Self-Esteem and Body Image Important?

Self-esteem is all about how much people value themselves, the pride they feel in themselves, and how worthwhile(=worthy)they feel. Self-esteem is important because feeling good about yourself can affect how you act. A person who has high self-esteem will make friends easily, is more in control of his or her behavior, and will enjoy life more.

Body image is how someone feels about his or her own physical appearance. For many people, especially those in their earl y teens, body image can be closely linked to self-esteem. That's because as kids develop into teens, they care more about how others see them.(承上句)自身形象就是一个人对自己的外表感觉如何。

What Influences a Person's Self-Esteem?

Puberty(青春期)

Some teens struggle with their self-esteem when they begin pubert y because the body goes through many changes. These changes, combined with a natural desire to feel accepted, mean it can be tempting for people to compare themselves with others. They may compare themselves with the people around them or with actors and celebs they see on TV, in movies, or in magazines.

1. These changes, combined with a natural desire to feel accepted, mean it can be tempting for people to compare themselves with others.

(1) natural desire

(2) it can be tempting(吸引人的,诱惑人的)for people to compare themselves with others 中it是形式主语,真正的主语是for people to compare themselves with others, for people作不定式的逻辑主语。

It's selfish of you to think of yourself all the time(你老是想着自己).

It's important for you to master a foreign language(你掌握一门外语).

It's +adj. +of sb. to do sth. 此类形容词包括:nice, kind, cruel, selfish, selfless, brave, wise, foolish, stupid 等。

Do you mind m y/me/ Tom's / Tom opening the window(我/汤姆开窗)?

His/Tom's having left home(他/汤姆离家出走)made his parents very sad.

24. It's essential ______ to keep a dictionary at hand while you are reading an English novel.

A. that you

B. your

C. of you

D. for you

形容词essential不是表示人的品质、行为的词,故选择for you而不是of you。

But it's impossible to measure ourselves against(对照… 较量)others because the changes that come with puberty are different for everyone.(承上启下句、主题句)Some people start developing early; others are late bloomers(成熟者). Some get a temporary layer of fat to prepare for a growth spurt(急剧增长); others fill out(长胖)permanently, and still others feel like(感觉象是;摸起来如同;想要)they stay skinny no matter how much they eat. It all depends on how our genes have program med(规划)our bodies to act.(承上总结句)

The changes that come with pubert y can affect how both girls and guys feel about themselves. Some girls may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about their maturing bodies. Others may wish that they were developing faster. Girls may feet pressure to be thin but guys may feel like they don't look big or muscular enough.

2. But it's impossible to measure ourselves against others because the changes that come with puberty are different for everyone.

measure oneself against ...

3. It all depends on how our genes have programmed our bodies to act.

(1) depend on 取决于

It depends.

(2) program

our genes have programmed our bodies to act

Outside Influences

It's not just development that affects self-esteem, though. Many other factors (like media images of skinny girls and bulked-up身材魁梧的guys) can affect a person's body image too.

Family life can sometimes influence self-esteem. Some parents spend more time criticizing their kids and the way they look than praising them, which can reduce kids' ability to develop good self-esteem.

People also may experience negative comments and hurtful teasing(取笑) about the way they look from classmates and peer s. Sometimes racial and ethnic prejudice is the source of such comments. Although these often come from ignorance, sometimes they can affect someone's body image and self-esteem.

Healthy Self-Esteem

If you have a positive body image, you probably like and accept yourself the way you are. This healthy attitude allows you to explore other aspects of growing up, such as developing good friendships, growing more independent from your parents, and challenging yourself physically and mentall y. Developing these parts of yourself can help boost your self-esteem.

A positive, optimistic attitude can help people develop strong self-esteem. For example, saying, "Hey, I'm human" instead of "Wow, I'm such a loser" when you've made a mistake, or not blaming others when things don't go as expected.

Knowing what makes you happy and how to meet your goals can help you feel capable, strong, and in control of your life. A positive attitude and a healthy lifest yle (such as exercising and eating right) are a great combination for building good self-esteem.

Tips for Improving Your Body Image

Some people think they need to change how they look or act to feel good about themselves. But actuall y all you need to do is change the way you see your body and how you think about yourself.

The first thing to do is recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. If you're very worried about your weight or size, check with your doctor t o verify that things are OK. But it's no one's business but your own what your body is like. Ultimately, you have to be happy with yourself.

Next, identify which aspects of your appearance you can realistically change and which you can't. Everyone (even the most perfect-seeming celeb) has things about themselves that they can't change and need to accept, like their height, for example, or their shoe size.

If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can (such as how fit you are), do this by making goals for yourself. For example, if you want to get fit, make a plan to exercise every day and eat nutritious foods. Then keep track of your progress until you reach your goal. Meeting a challenge you set for yourself is a great way to boost self-esteem!

4. If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can (such as how fit you are), do this by making goals for yourself.

do sth. for oneself为自己做事

Good students should learn to think for themselves.

do sth. by oneself自己做事

Because there was nobody else, he had to do it by himself.

(1)-er, -or, -ist, -ee, -ian, -ese, -ant

Unit 1 The Power of Language Text A Pre-reading Questions 1.Do you usually challenge the idea an author represents? What do you think is active reading? 2.What suggestions do you expect the author will give on reading critically? Critical Reading Critical reading applies to non-fiction writing in which the author puts forth a position or seeks to make a statement. Critical reading is active reading. It involves more than just understanding what an author is saying. Critical reading involves questioning and evaluating what the author is saying ,and forming your own opinions about what the author is saying. Here are the things you should do to be a critical reader. Consider the context of what is written. You may be reading something that was written by an author from a different cultural context than yours. Or, you may be reading something written some time ago in a different time context than yours. In either case, you must recognize and take into account any differences between your values and attitudes and those represented by the author. Question assertion s made by the author. Don’t accept what is written at face value. Before accepting what is written, be certain that the author provides sufficient support for any assertions made. Look for facts, examples, and statistics that provide support. Also, look to see if

Unit 10 Ode to Public Transportation

Unit 10 Ode to Public Transportation A Famous Quote: Plain living and high thinking. –William Wordsworth William Wordsworth (1770-1850), one of the greatest English poets. He was a leader of the romantic movements in England and one of the greatest lyric poets in the history of English literature. Text A: The Importance of Public Transportation Pre-reading Questions: 1. Do you find it important to use public transportation? What are some of the reasons? 2. What suggestions do you give to others on using public transportation? A US Congressman once proclaimed that, “There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy.” I know exactly what he means. In this day and age, access to transportation is considered a necessity. Public transportation is defined as a service that is available for use by the general public. It is a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative. It is not a transportation service that you can arrange privately to suit your own personal convenience (although you may, to a certain extent, such as paying for cabin or suite on a train or ship) since you have to consider other passengers who are riding and making similar arrangements with you. I have experienced first-hand how important public transportation is. I live in Saipan, a US territory and the closest things we have to public transportation are tourist and school buses. You have to have your own car or bike, rent a car, or pay upfront for a taxi to go from point A to point B. Otherwise you end up basked in a sweat and sunburn traveling to work every day. When I first came here, I walked. I walked going to and from work. I walked to the store and lugged my heavy groceries back to the house. I walked to church and I barely got to places farther than a twenty-mile radius from my house since I did not own a car then, and I considered renting a car and riding a taxi such an expense for a starting single mother like I was at that time. For me, public transportation is very important because of the following

To Lease(租赁) or Not to Lease Planning to lease a car because you don't think you can afford to buy? Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

What are my...my hobbies ,由此可以看出他们关注的更多是公司给予的“假期”待遇,而非工作本身带来的经历、价值和成长空间等。 答案为A。 I would enter our barnyard...the milking barn,即需要给10至12只奶牛挤奶,至于说是不是一共有12头牛,或者父母会帮忙给余下的其他奶牛挤奶,文章并未提及。 Good morning.It's good to seeyou! I didn't feel quite the same way,这说明作者和父母的感受不同,不愿意清早起床挤牛奶。答案为A。 It made me...to the road, My father and mother...helped me with milking the cows ,即我的父母经常帮我一起挤牛奶,所以题干中说“我经常独自一人挤牛奶”是错误的。 To my father...as it may seem ,即对于父亲来说,挤牛奶看上去并没有那么复杂。 But Father...needed to be milked,意为奶牛也需要被挤奶,和题干含义吻合。答案为A。 答案为A。 Self-confidence and empowerment can serve us well,即Self-confidence和empowerment会在我们的工作中和生活中帮助我们。 答案为A。 (Both men lost their lives)。 They both loved books and music,即两人都喜欢书籍和音乐,与B项内容吻合。 Ed became disabled after a diving accident,即Ed是在跳水中出了事故,而并非driving (驾驶),所以C项是错误的。 答案为A。 Mistakes have a way of focusing our attention at…in our face,即错误会给我们一种集中精力和直面关键问题的方法。 答案为A。
