When I was a child I used to come home crying because of others picking on me. My mom and grandmother were always there offering me a shoulder to cry on. My grandfather (who is a good person), however, made me feel like a whale in a small house.

When I grew up, I would get angry and tell him off, not using rude words but just saying how I felt when he said those things to me. I understand he has meant to help but to me, that's not the case. It has to be my decision not anyone else's. He has laid off such things, but every time I see some Slim-Fast commercials or something, I tense up when he is in the room because he reminds me of the word ”You need to lose weight. ”

I live with my "problem" 24/7. I know that I am large. Now, I don't hear him say that anymore. I do tense sometimes when the news talks about overweight children. It is hard for someone else to understand the mental and physical stress from peer(同龄人) pressure. It is just like a huge rock pressing my heart. I sometimes want to scream, I know that there are health problems associated with being overweight, but so is smoking, drinking and the list goes on.

Knowing what though, I love me for me. I don't want to change. I like to stick out in a crowd. I will be remembered. I am different. I am a BBB (Big Beautiful Brunette) ,who is successful in whatever 1 do, wherever I go.

Here are some useful tips when you are feeling blue : maximize your good points and minimize the bad ones. No one is perfect. Be happy for who you are not what you look like. Beauty fades in time, but what you are inside is there forever. Live life to the fullest and enjoy who you are. There is only one you. No one else can fill those unique shoes.(改编自浙江新高考原创冲刺卷5)

A new product from Microsoft Corporation can do just that for people who have trouble seeing. They may be blind or visually challenged, The product, an app, is called Seeing AI. AI is short for artificial intelligence, a term for computers with an ability to think and learn like human beings.

Seeing AI is currently available for free for Apple's iPhone and iPad in Canada, Hong Kong, India, 1 New Zealand, Singapore and the USA. It has four channels: Short Text, Document, Product, and Person. After you download it, the app will show video directions for each channel. And the app uses both a camera and artificial intelligence to identify places, objects and people ( even the emotions of people). People can use Seeing AI to learn words in English. With the app open, you can point your iPhone or iPad at any object and it will say what the object is. People can also use the app when going to a store or supermarket. It can read product bar codes(条形码) so users will know whether a can is filled with fruit or dog food.. In addition, at restaurants, diners can use it to hear a list of drinks and other menu offerings. It can recognize both food choices and prices. And in the near future, it will be able to identify banknotes so people know whether the bill that they are holding is worth $ 100or $ 1.

However, as a new app, Seeing AI will not be corret100% of the time. For example, someone is smiling, which does not necessarily mean he is happy. The app recognizes text, but not handwriting yet. C

We give toys to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have them. Load bags with canned foods for the

hungry. Make donations to those who need it. This time of year, it seems, we focus more on doing good and being good. Certainly, that's not a bad thing.

But, is all that kindness selfish? Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley say that

kindness, and related qualities like sympathy and compassion are actually a form of self-

preservation. Those who give more, get more. The most generous among us have greater influence and are more popular. Whereas, the unkind and unhelpful are more likely to be cast

adrift from us. After all, it stands to reason, that if I'm paddling your lifeboat, you’ll keep me

afloat a little longer.

So, is kindness motivated by our real concern for others or are we do-gooders because it

makes us look good and shores up our position in the ecosystem? Probably both. Most of us really enjoy helping others. It makes us feel good, connected, happy and that makes for a healthier more satisfying life. But, it doesn’t hurt that we also receive other rewards — status, cooperation, Influence — that will help us survive and become successful.

Despite all the benefits, I tend most often toward kindness only when it's convenient. That

doesn't mean I have bad manners. I say my pleases and thank-yous. I hold the door open for

passengers. But, I could be kinder, more often. Sometimes I'm stopped from doing good by just

how to do it. Sometimes, I'm just not thinking enough about others to recognize the need.

Sometimes, I’m plain, old selfish.

I'm working to be more aware of those around me. To slow down and move with patience and

purpose on the freeway. T o be more kind. My acts of kindness aren’t complex or flashy — I'm not the type. They aren't expensive — I’m too cheap. But those things aren’t required. You don’t have to feel guilty that your kind gesture wasn't as big as say, Oprah building a school in Africa. Kindness can be a small, simple act and still make an extremely large impact. Notice a need and then consciously offer

a bit of yourself.(改编自绍兴市二模)

27. What do researchers at the University of California. Berkeley say about kindness?

A. Kindness is a behavior for self-protection and survival.

B. Kindness reflects the generosity of human nature.

C. It is worthwhile to advocate doing good or being good.

D. It doesn’t count in building a good relationship.

28. According to paragraphs 4-5, the author will show his kindness by ___________

A. making large donations to those poor people

B. doing good to people around him anywhere and anytime

C. smiling and waving at the passenger interrupting him sincerely

D. reminding the passengers to behave themselves forcefully

29. From the author's point of view, ____________

A. acts of kindness can be something simple and practical

B. acts of kindness should be something impressive

C. kindness starts from some grand and heroic actions

D. kindness is more a matter of awareness in cooperation

30. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A. Kindness: A Quality of Sympathy

B. Kindness: A Concern for Others

C. Kindness: A win-win Quality

D. Kindness: An Approach to Success

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

In many countries the best, and sometimes only, path to acceptance to a university is having high test scores or good grades.

In the US, admissions officials almost always ask students to list the activities they are involved in outside of the classroom in their applications. 31 This method of considering both academic success and non-academic skills is known as holistic (全面的) admissions.

The more a school knows about a student’s interests, the more they understand the student.

32 The best American universities receive thousands of applications from both inside and outside the country. For example, Washington University had over 30,000 applicants for the 2017 school year. But it only had room to accept about 16 percent of them.

33 What would schools value more: playing basketball or singing in a musical group? Is it more important to spend weekends serving free food to homeless people or cleaning up a public park?

Thinking about holistic admissions in this way is not helpful. Instead of trying to figure out which activities are better than others, you should think about which activities serve you best as an individual.

A student could explain their interest in reading many books or even exploring their home city. 35 Students, for example, can bring attention to their special qualities in the writing samples they provide, or the letters they ask teachers

to write in support of them.

Students should trust that admissions officials will consider their personal history and what might have been available to them. The holistic method lets them pay more attention to the qualities they are looking for, not only academics.(

改编自镇海中学全真模拟卷)

A.Many universities only value test scores.

B.You can do almost anything, as long as it’s legal.

C.It’s difficult to choose an activity that suits you

best.

D.Some students might wonder how to choose activities.

E.This is especially important for the top universities in the US.

F.These activities can show that a student possesses the qualities they are looking

for.

G.Also, there are other places where a student can describe their non-academic

interests.

第二节:概要写作(满分 25 分)

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade

are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other combustible tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded

by the National Institutes of Health.

The study compared tobacco use initiation among 222 students who had used

e-cigarettes, but not combustible tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used

e-cigarettes or combustible tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start

of ninth grade. During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e-cigarettes started using combustible tobacco products, such

as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used

e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used combustible tobacco products, compared

to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.

“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to carefully watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same harmful effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”

Data were collected as part of a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles. The study surveyed students from 10 public high schools and the analysis focused on 2,530 students who initially reported never using combustible tobacco and underwent follow-up assessments after six and 12 months. Students were asked about lifetime and past six-month use of e-cigarettes, combustible cigarettes, full-size cigars, little cigars/cigarillos, hookah water pipes, and blunts.

“E-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco.” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could finally contribute to smoking-related illness."(原创)

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字)rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters —from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂)of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s par tly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible — and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century? A. They were difficult to understand. B. They were popular among the rich. C. They were seen as nearly worthless. D. They were written mostly by women. 22. Dickens is compared with the Mona Lisa in the text to stress________.

2018年浙江省杭州高中高考英语最后一卷 副标题 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A One day your pocket might power your smart phone.Soon you may never have to worry about your smart phone running out of juice.Your clothing will simply power it back up for you. That's the word from scientists at China's Chongqing and Jinan Universities in a study just published in the journal ACS Nano. Researchers have been hard at work during the last few years trying to create wearable energy,or clothes that can charge things. The assumption is simple.People today rely heavily upon devices such as smart phones and tablets. And they're looking for ways to recharge these devices on the go.So if you could design clothing fabric that could make use of solar power -one of the most widely available and inexhaustible renewable energy sources - you'd be able to charge your various devices with ease. Scientists have had some past success creating energy-harvesting fibers. But there was always one problem when they tried to fashion these threads into self-powered smart clothes:The fibers they designed got damaged during the clothing manufacturing process, namely during the weaving and cutting. The Chongqing and Jinan University scientists say they've solved this problem because the energy-collecting and energy-storing threads they created are highly flexible - each individual thread is easily bendable, and not simply the fabric as a whole. The team's sample textile can be fully charged to 1.2 volts in 17 seconds by exposure to sunlight - enough voltage that your future smart T or smart dress might be able to power small electronics. It's durable, too;their research showed there was no descent in the fabric after 60 days. But don't worry that this means the fabric is similar to rough cloth. The scientists note their textile can be fashioned into numerous different patterns, and tailored into any designed shape, without affecting performance. 1.What does the underlined phrase "running out of juice" in paragraph 1mean?______ A. Being lacking in energy. B. Wanting to have some juice. C. Being picked out of a drink. D. Having some water running out. 2.Why could smart dress charge a phone?______ A. A solar cell is attached to the dress. B. The fabric of the textile contains current. C. The fabric of the textile is easily bendable. D. The fabric of the textile could collect and store the solar energy. 3.What is the scientists' attitude towards the scientific technology?______ A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful. 【答案】 【小题1】A 【小题2】D 【小题3】A 第1页,共13页

An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. 浙江省杭州市2019届高三高考模拟卷二英语试卷SYS201907080741 一、阅读理解 详细信息 1. 难度:中等 Seventy-three-year-old George McNeilon selected his food in Value Mart very carefully. After leaving the cashier, he estimated (估计) that he had saved 80 cents and thought that he had got good value for his money again. At the exit, the chilly wind reminded him of his gloves. “Now where are they?” He searched here and there, but nowhere could he find them. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. The worried man made a second search in all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. He was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store. George bought the gloves at a 25% discount, for just $30, ten years ago. They were genuine lambskin (小羊皮), soft, warm and durable. Until then, he had worn cheaper man-made material that lasted no more than three years. His impulsive decision to buy the expensive gloves turned out to be a good one, which even promoted his social status on the bus, as passengers stared at him enviously for six months out of the year. He enjoyed being envied. Bad luck, George thought, to lose his expensive gloves on New Year’s Eve. He reentered the store and followed the same route he had walked before. But several minutes of anxious search turned out to be in vain. “Society has changed. People have changed …” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if people picked up something lost, they would give it back.” Back home, George was at a loss. In deep winter, he could not do anything without a pair of gloves. If he bought cheap ones, he would have to replace them very soon. If he bought new leather ones, they would cost forty dollars. After the holiday, poor George decided to buy another pair of leather gloves. Before boarding the subway, he stepped into Value Mart again to see if by any chance his gloves had been returned to the lost and found office. “What color are they?” the woman in the office asked. “Black,” he answered. She looked into her drawer and drew out a pair of men’s leather gloves. “Are they?” “Yes! Those are mine!” 1.Which of the following is the most probable reason for George’s shopping? A. To kill time in Value Mart as usual.
