1. This was the end. It was her father who laid down the rules in her family and th ere was never any appeal, any second chance. After protracted discussion and her repeated pleas she had been allowed this weekly visit to the disco run by the church youth club, provided she caught the nine-forty bus without fail. It’d put her down at the “Crown an d Anchor” at Cobb’s marsh, only fifty yards from her cottage. From ten fifteen her father would begin watching for the bus to pass the front room where he and her mother woul d sit half-watching the television, the curtains drawn back. Whatever the programme or w eather, he would then put on his coat and come out to walk the fifty yards to meet her, keeping her always in sight. Since the Norfolk Whistler had begun his killings, her father had an added justification for the mild domestic tyranny which she half-realized, he thou ght right in dealing with his only child and rather enjoyed. The concordat had been early established:“You do right by me, my girl, and I’ll do right by you.”She both loved him and slightly feared him and she dreaded his anger. Now there would be one of those aw ful rows in which she knew she could n’t hope to look to her mother for support. It woul d be the end of her Friday evenings with Wayne and Shirl and the gang. Already they te ased and pitied her because she was treated like a child. Now it would be total humiliati on.

Her final desperate thou ght was to hire a taxi and chase the bus, but she didn’t kno w where the cab rank was and she hadn’t enough money; she was sure of that. She coul d go back to the disco and see if Wayne and Shirl and the gang between them could len d her enough. But Wayne was always skint (身无分文的)and Shirl too mean and by the t ime she had argued and cajoled(哄骗)it would be too late.

1. What was the girl’s problem now?

A. The bus was late

B. She was late for the nine-forty bus

C. She was afraid to encounter the Norfolk Whistler

D. Her father would not come out to meet her on her way home

2. Why did the girl think "This was the end"?

A. She had seen the Norfolk Whistle coming

B. She would never be able to get home

C. Her parents would give her a hard time

D. She would never be allowed to visit the disco again

3. How long would it take her to get to the "Crown and Anchor"by bus?

A. 40 minutes or so

B. About half an hour

C. Over an hour

D. Hard to tell

4. Which of the following statements is probably true?

A. Her father had been strict with her ever since the Norfolk Whistler began his killi ngs

B. Her father had always been strict with her since her childhood

C. She dreaded her father because he was always angry with her

D. Whatever happened her mother always sided by her

5. "She was sure of that."This means that she was sure___

A. she could catch up with the bus if she took a taxi

B. she could not borrow any money from either Wayne or Shirl

C. she did not have enough money on her to hire a taxi

D. she would never be able to get home in time

2. Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these que stion is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of speci al education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other h and, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one

who lives in r ich and varied surrounding. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are f ixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. T he closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in in telligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likel y that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we ta ke two identical twins they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to university and the other to factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates th at environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who lives in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, ar e likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

1. Which of these sentences best describes the writer’s point in Paragraph 1?

A. To some extent, intelligence is given at birth

B. Intelligence is developed by the environment

C. Some people are born clever and others born stupid

D. Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment

2. It is suggested in this passage that___.

A. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligence

B. close relation usually have similar intelligence

C. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligence

D. people who lived in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar d egrees of intelligence.

3. Brothers and sisters are likely to___.

A. have similar intelligence

Passage 1

The elevator door slid open. The crowd inside let out a collective gasp of excite ment. But no one was more excited than my mom. This 110-pound woman is not normall y rude, but suddenly she rushed through the door, nearly knocking over an elderly Germa n tourist.

My m om wasn’t interested in the sights; she just wanted air. If there’s one thing that frightens my mom more than packed spaces, it’s heights. We were now 889 feet ab ove the Paris cityscape. Maybe we should have taken the Eiffel Tower off our “to do”list.

By the time I caught up with her, she had pressed her entire body against a hu ge steel girder(大梁). I couldn’t help but laugh.

“What?” she said defensively, her arms wrapped around the support and her face flushed. “I’m having a great time. ”

“Yeah, I can tell. Let’s go, ”I said.

My mom replied,“I can’t. ” Amidst the twinkling reflection of the City of Lights, I saw terror in her eyes. She was so scared of heights, she couldn’t move.

I was going to have to think of something—and fast. “I know, Mom!”I sh outed, making her jump. “We don’t have to get back in the elevator. We can walk all the way down. ” Before she could think about it, I took her arm and led her over to the stairs.

Finally, after 20 minutes, we headed down the last flight. “See? That wasn’t so bad. ”

I pushed on the steel exit gate. The gate didn’t move. I felt a fit of panic. I pu shed again, still no movement. I shoved again and again against the gate. Out of breath, I felt on the verge of tears.

“Qu’est-ce que c’est la probleme?”

A young French security guard stood on the other side of the gate. He repeated his question. The fact that I didn’t understand French only made me panic more. I bange d violently on the door, and rocked against it—still nothing.

The guard smiled now. He poi nted up and said in English, “The sign. Read it. ”

I followed his pointing finger to a sign that hung above the gate. It said:“Tirez.” I looked at the guard blankly. What did that mean?

“The sign,” the guard told me. “It says, Pull. ”

Stepping back, I stopped pushing the gate. I pulled instead. It swung open easily. Now my face burned with embarrassment, not panic.

“Karen, you really need to learn to relax,” my mom said, laughing as she breeze d past me.

Passage 2

Sixth-grader Ivory Kelly finished up an English assignment at the blackboard. Th en . . . Ping! Ping! He felt his head being hit. The 12-year-old knew just who was attac king him. He spun around and shouted at DeAngela Byrd. DeAngela claimed she was inn ocent. Then she called Ivory a“guinea pig(豚鼠). ”“Liar!”he yelled back. Their te acher, Linda Mann didn’t send them to the principal. She didn’t even make them stand in the hall. Instead, she sent them to work things out in a small storage room in the sch ool. The room is Glengarry Elementary’s mediation(调解)center.

Mediation in school is a way to solve disputes without having teachers punish st udents. Kid mediators are trained to listen to classmates accused of misbehaving or fightin g. Without taking sides, the mediators help troubled kids come up with their own solution s. It usually takes no more than 15 minutes.

At Glengarry, 30 students from third through sixth grades are trained to settle fi ghts. After calmly discussing the attack and name calling with sixth-grade mediators, Mich

ael Reese and Tracie Thacker, Ivory and DeAngela signed a pledge “not to mess with ea ch other. ”

Many U. S. elementary schools are starting to give kids more responsibility for discipline. In the past 10 years’ one-tenth of the nation’s 86,000 public schools have staff ed programs to resolve conflicts, mostly in middle or high schools. But educators want to begin more mediation programs sooner. They say elementary-age kids are even better at talking about their feelings and deciding on a fair solution than older kids are! When a te acher or principal is not invo lved, “kids talk more freely,” says Glengarry Principal Lorain e Johnson.

So far, mediation seems to work well. In one survey of 115 Ohio elementary sc hools with mediation programs’ two out of three noted a decrease in fights, and more tha n half said fewe r kids were being sent to the principal’s office. In New Mexico, reports o f bad behavior in elementary schools have dropped 85% since mediation programs began.

Glengarry mediator David Townlye , 11, says the method really works and not j ust in school. He used his new skills to help end a long-running battle between his grand mother and mother. “My grandmother thought my mother kept spending too much on flo wers she planted outside our house,” said David. “I let both of them talk. Finally, my mo ther agreed n ot to spend so much. ”

26. What do the kid mediators do in the center?

A. They provide a solution for the kids who fight.

B. They each defend a kid involved in the conflict.

C. They listen to the kids talking about their disputes.

D. They pick the punishment for the kids who misbehave.

A. Talking to the kids themselves.

B. Sending the kids to the principal.

C. Making the kids stand in the hall.

28. What is one of the reasons that many schools have set up mediation progra ms according to the passage?

But to their surprise, many people find that enduring such a harrowing ordeal ultimately changes them for the better.Their refrain might go something like this: "I wish it hadn't happened, but I'm a better person for it." 1飓风、房屋失火、癌症、激流漂筏失事、坠机、昏暗小巷遭歹徒袭击,没人想找上这些事儿。 2 We love to hear the stories of people who have been transformed by their tribulations, perhaps because they testify to a bona fide type of psychological truth, one that sometimes gets lost amid endless reports of disaster: There seems to be a built-in human capacity to flourish under the most difficult circumstances. Positive responses to profoundly disturbing experiences are not limited to the toughest or the bravest. In fact, roughly half the people who struggle with adversity say that their lives subsequently in some ways improved.

Lesson One The Time Message Elwood N. Chapman Learning Guide 1 Time is tricky. It is difficult to control and easy to waste. When you look ahead, you think you have more time than you need. For example, at the beginning of a semester, you may feel that you have plenty of time on your hands. But toward the end of the term you may suddenly find that time is running out. You don't have enough time to cover all your duties, so you get worried. What is the answer, Control~ 2 Time is dangerous. If you don't control it, it will control you. If you don't make it work for you, it will work against you. So you must become the master of time, not its servant. As a first-year college student, time management will be your number one problem.

《综合英语》考试试卷(A卷、闭卷) Part I Reading Comprehension (阅读理解) (每小题3分,共15分) Passage One Suppose we built a robot to explore the planet Mars. We provide the robot with seeing detectors to keep it away from danger. It is powered entirely by the sun. Should we program the robot to be equally active at all times? No. The robot would be using up energy at a time when it was not receiving any. So we would probably program it to cease its activity at night and to wake up at dawn the next morning. According to the evolutionary theory of sleep, evolution equipped us with a regular pattern of sleeping and waking for the same reason. The theory does not deny that sleep provides some important restorative functions. It merely says that evolution has programmed us to perform those functions at a time when activity would be inefficient and possibly dangerous. However, sleep protects us only from the sort of trouble we might walk into; it does not protect us from trouble that comes looking for us. So we sleep well when we are in a familiar, safe place, but we sleep lightly, if at all, when we fear that bears will nose into the tent. The evolutionary theory accounts well for differences in sleep among creatures. Why do cats, for instance, sleep so much, while horses sleep so little? Surely cats do not need five times as much repair and restoration as horses do. But cats can afford to have long periods of inactivity because they spend little time eating and are unlikely to be attacked while they sleep. Horses must spend almost all their waking hours eating, because what they eat is very low in energy value. Moreover, they cannot afford to sleep too long or too deeply, because their survival depends on their ability to run away from attackers. 1.The author uses the example of the robot in space exploration to tell us . A) the differences between robots and men B) the reason why men need to sleep C) about the need for robots to save power D) about the danger of men working at night 2.Evolution has programmed man to sleep at night chiefly to help
