Ross: Would you all relax? It's not that big a deal.

Rachel: Let's just say my Curious George doll is no longer curious.

Curious George

[Scene: A Tap Class, the girls are standing at the door.]

Monica: Yeah. It's Dutch

Fake Monica: You're kidding! I-I spent three years in Amsterdam. (Asks her something in Dutch)

Amsterdam n. n.

Monica: Um, Pennsylvania Dutch.

Teacher: And we're dancing. A-five, six, seven, eight...

Ross: She says as time goes on, he's gonna start getting agressive and violent.

as time goes on随着时间的推移

Chandler: So what does this mean?

Ross: I'm gonna have to give him up.

Commercial Break

[Scene: Central Perk, scene continued from earlier. They guys are sitting there like the Three Monkeys.]

Joey: I can't believe it, Ross. This sucks

Chandler:I don't get it, I mean, you just got him. How can he be an adult already?

Ross:I know. I know. I mean, one day, he's this little thing, and before you know it, he's this little thing I can't get off my leg

Joey: Isn't there any way you can keep him?

Ross: No, no. The vet says unless he's in a place where he has regular access to some... monkey lovin,' he's just gonna get vicious. I've just gotta get him into a zoo.

have access to有途径得到/vicious adj.

Joey: How do you get a monkey into a zoo?

Chandler: I know that one! ...No, that's Popes(教皇) into a Volkswagen (大众汽车).

popes into a volkswagen :Chandler这句话该是针对Joey所说的,所以有必要看一下Joey的话:

Joey: How do you get a monkey into a zoo? Chandler: I know that one! ...No, that's Popes into a Volkswagen.

Popes into a Volkswagen.

西方人的文化中:there is often a joke about "How can you get a ____ into a volkswagen.... "

Ross: Well, we're applying to a lot of them. Naturally our first choice would be one of the bigger state zoos, y'know, like, uh, San Diego... right? But that might just be a pipe dream, because, y'know, he's out of state. Uh, my vet, uh, knows someone at Miami, so that's a possibility.

apply to v. a.

Chandler: Yeah, but that's like two blocks away from the beach. I mean, it's a total party zoo

(Phoebe, Monica, and Rachel enters.)

Phoebe: Hey. We found her, we found the girl.

Chandler: What?

Joey: Did you call the cops<

Rachel: Nope. We took her to lunch.

Ross: What?! Are you insane? This woman stole from you. She stole. She's a stealer.

Monica: Y'know what? After you're with this woman for like ten minutes, you forget all that. I mean, she is this astounding person, with this, with this amazing spirit.

astound v.使震惊/astounding person n.奇人

Ross: Yeah, which she probably stole from some cheerleader

Chandler: ...Take off their hats!

Phoebe: Popes in a Volkswagen! ...I love that joke.

How do you get Popes in a Voltswaggon?回答是Take off their hats。

[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, Monica, Rachel and Fake Monica are there.]

Rachel:No way不可能. No way did you do this.

Fake Monica: Monana was very brave.

Monica:It was so wild疯狂的. We told them we were the Gunnersens in room six fifteen. Only to find out the Boston Celtics had taken over the entire sixth floor!

Fake Monica:So once they caught on to the fact that we're, y'know, short and have breasts...

Monica: ...They threw us out! I was thrown out of轰出 a hotel! Me!

Monica:Nononononono. Think who you're dealing with here. I mean, I'm not like you. I-I can't even stand in front of a tap class.

Fake Monica:Well, that's just probably 'cause of your Amish background.

Monica: What?

Fake Monica: Well, you're Pennsylvania Dutch, right?

Monica: Right. Till I bought a blow dryer吹风机, then I was shunned.

shun v.避免,避开,逃避/be shunned =expel from a community or group,被逐出。eg:Materialists face truth, whereas idealists shun it.

Fake Monica:I-I used to be just like you. And then one day I saw a movie that changed my life. Did you ever see Dead Poets' Society?

Monica: Uh-huh.

Fake Monica: I thought that movie was so incredibly... boring. I mean, that thing at the end where the kid kills himself because he can't be in the play话剧? What was that?! It's like, kid, wait a year, leave home, do some community theatre. I walked out of there and I thought, 'Now, that's two hours of my life that I'm never getting back.' And that thought scared me more than all the other crap(n.垃圾,废物) I was afraid to do.

Monica: Wow. Then I would definitely not recommend Mrs. Doubtfire.

[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, tiem lapse. Everyone but Joey and Monica are there.]

Ross:(Reading letters) Oh God. (To Marcel) We didn't get into Scranton. (To the others) That was like our safety zoo. They take like dogs and cows. See? I don't know who this is harder on, me or him.

Phoebe: ...Flame Boy.

[Scene: Central Perk, Ross is talking to Dr. Baldhara, a zookeeper

interactive adj.

Ross: Yes.

Dr. Baldhara: Does he, uh, fight with other animals?

Ross: No-no, he's, he's very docile.

docile (=tame)adj.

Dr. Baldhara: Even if he were... cornered?

Ross: Well I, I don't know. Why?

Dr. Baldhara: Uh, how is he at handling small objects?

be at 做,从事于

Ross: He can hold a banana, if that's whatcha mean...

Dr. Baldhara: How about a hammer, or a small blade

Ross: Why- why- why would he need a blade?

Dr. Baldhara:Well, if he's up against a jungle cat or an animal with horns 角, you've got to give the little guy something. Otherwise it's just cruel.

be up against vt.(暗指在危险的情况下)面对面临/jungle cat丛林猫

(Chandler and Joey burst in, with Marcel)

Chandler and Joey: He- he- he got in, he- he got in to San Diego.

San Diego Zoo:

Joey: We, we come back from our walk and the- the phone was ringing...

Chandler: ...He's in.

Ross: He's in! Oh, did you hear that, Marcel? San Diego. San Diego!

Dr. Baldhara: You're making a big mistake here. I mean, San Diego's all well and good, but if you give him to me, I'll start him off against a blind rabbit and give you twenty percent of the gains利润.

Monica: No, it is me! Y'know, I'm not just the person who needs to fluff the pillows and pay the bills as soon as they come in! Y'know, when I'm with her, I am so much more than that. I'm- I'm Monana!

(The phone rings and Rachel answers)

Rachel: Hello? Yes, she is, hold on a second, please. Monana, it's for you, the credit card people.

Monica: Helloooo? Yeah. Oh my God. Thanks.

Rachel: What?

Monica: They've arrested Monica.

【Season 1 Index】 Episode 101 : The One Where Monica Gets A New Roommate (Pilot) Episode 102 : The One With The Sonogram At The End Episode 103 : The One With The Thumb Episode 104 : The One With George Stephanopoulos Episode 105 : The One With The East German Laundry Detergent Episode 106 : The One With The Butt Episode 107 : The One With The Blackout Episode 108 : The One Where Nana Dies Twice Episode 109 : The One Where Underdog Gets Away Episode 110 : The One With The Monkey Episode 111 : The One With Mrs. Bing Episode 112 : The One With The Dozen Lasagnas Episode 113 : The One With The Boobies Episode 114 : The One With The Candy Hearts Episode 115 : The One With The Stoned Guy Episode 116 : The One With Two Parts, Part 1

The One With the Sonogram at the End [Scene Central Perk, everyone's there.] Monica: What you guys don't understand is, for us, kissing is as important as any part of it. Joey: Yeah, right!.......Y'serious? Phoebe: Oh, yeah! Rachel: Everything you need to know is in that first kiss. Monica: Absolutely. Chandler: Yeah, I think for us, kissing is pretty much like an opening act, y'know? I mean it's like the stand-up comedian you have to sit through before Pink Floyd comes out. Ross: Yeah, and-and it's not that we don't like the comedian, it's that-that... that's not why we bought the ticket. Chandler: The problem is, though, after the concert's over, no matter how great the show was, you girls are always looking for the comedian again, y'know? I mean, we're in the car, we're fighting traffic... basically just trying to stay awake.(我的意思是,我们在车里努力挣扎,仅仅是为了保持清醒) Rachel: Yeah, well, word of advice: Bring back the comedian. Otherwise next time you're gonna find yourself sitting at home, listening to that album alone. Joey: (pause)....Are we still talking about sex? Opening Credits [Scene: Museum of Prehistoric History, Ross and a co-worker (Marsha) are setting up an exhibit which includes some mannequins of cave people.] Ross: No, it's good, it is good, it's just that- mm- doesn't she seem a little angry? The One With All The Haste Written by: Wil Calhoun & Scott Silveri Transcribed by: Eric Aasen 4.19 The One With All The Haste The singing man, the bird smell, and the lack of space drive Rachel and Monica to new attempts to get their old apartment back; when they fail to bribe Chandler and Joey with season Knicks tickets, they try making another bet... and lose again, so they have neither the tickets nor the apartment. However, while Joey and Chandler are at a game, Rachel and Monica switch apartments. Chandler objects but Monica and Rachel offer to kiss each other for a full minute if they can keep the apartment.

【103】The One With The Thumb antique’s NO.3 The One With the Thumb 1. Phoebe: Um, not so good. He walked me to the subway and said 'We should do this again!' “We should do this again”,表面上好像是以后我们还应该再继续约会,其实这是dating language,往往都是反着说的,近年来网路上有很多类似的帖子,大家可以找来看看,很搞笑的。 比如“I t's not you'”就是“It is you”,“You're such a nice guy”意思是“I'm gonna be dating leather-wearing alcoholics and complaining about them to you”等等。 Cushions the blow. 3.Monica: I mean, why should I let them meet him? I mean, I bring a guy home, and within five minutes they're all over him. I mean, they're like- coyotes, picking off the weak members of the herd . Paula: Listen. As someone who's seen more than her fair share of bad beef, I'll tell you: that is not such a terrible thing. I mean, they're your friends, they're just looking out after you. Pick off the weak members of the herd,摘取、挑选弱处下手的意思。 4.Paula: Well, you do realize the odds of that happening are a little slimmer if they never get to meet the guy .odds这里的意思是可能的机会、几率,相当于Chance。 5.Monica: (to Alan) Thanks. I'll call you tomorrow. (Alan exits, to all) Okay. Okay, let's let the Alan-bashing begin. Who's gonna take the first shot, hmm?

【102】The One With The Sonogram At The End antique’s No.2 The One With the Sonogram at the End 1.Rachel: Everything you need to know is in that first kiss. 2.Chandler: Yeah, I think for us, kissing is pretty much like an opening act, y'know? I mean it's like the stand-up comedian you have to sit through before Pink Floyd comes out. 3.Marsha: Well, she has issues. Do you have any issues? 4.Carol: Marty's still totally paranoid. 5.Rachel: Oh, like I wasn't dreading tomorrow enough, having to give it back to him... 'Hi Barry! Remember me? I'm the girl in the veil who stomped on your heart in front of your entire family!' Oh God and now I'm gonna have to return the ring, without the ring, which makes it so much harder... 6.Chandler: Kinda puts that whole pillow thing in perspective, huh, Mon?“kinda”在片中出现的次数非常频繁,也是口语中非常实用的词语,意思是有一点儿,相当于kind of. 7.Monica: I know this is going to sound unbelievably selfish, but, were you planning on bringing up the whole baby/lesbian thing? Because I think it might take some of the heat off me.Ross和Monica的父母来看望他们,由于从小父母就喜欢Ross(因为Ross成绩优异,为人老实,而

She does meet someone (Jim), but her turns out to be a creep. But then she meets another guy (Parker) who seems more promising(adj. Ross realizes he's left his favorite shirt at Mona's apartment. He tries to retrieve(v.拿回) it when she's not there, but gets caught. 【101】The One Where Monica Gets a New Roommate antique’s NO.1 The One Where Monica Gets a New Roommate 或者the one where,或者the one which... 1. Chandler :So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece? 2. Ross: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck.. 3. Ross:Why does everyone keep fixating on that? Remember:fixate on sth. 4. Joey: Strip joint! C'mon, you're single! Have some hormones! 5. Rachel: I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. 这句话里面有三个词组需要解释,第一个是turn on,也就是打开的意思,比如turn on the radio,这里是指让某人更兴奋激动的意思,想一想,平时在路上走,这时候有个sexy美女路过,你就可以说:wow, the gal really turns me on.第二个是freak out,这个词组很重要,几乎在每集都能听到,频率高的吓人,看来口语中很实用,在论坛上我看到以下几种解释,觉得不错,a.have an extreme reaction to sth b.act abnormally (under the influence of drugs) c.make sb feel extreme plaesure or unease,也就是表达焦躁害怕不安等情绪的意思。 6. Joey: You got screwed. 7. Paul: No, it's, it's more of a fifth date kinda revelation.
