“For the past years, my life has been changing along with China,” sai d Dashan,

a Canadian who is liked by many Chinese during an interview.

In 1988, Dashan performed in CCTV’s New Year’s Gala (春节联欢晚会) and he

became famous soon. He said that he had witnessed (见证) many changes in China. To Dashan, one of the greatest changes in China is its way of communicating(交流) with

the outside world. His first trip to China in 1988 lasted days and he had to change

planes and then took a train journey from Hong Kong to Beijing. Now it takes only

13 hours to fly non-stop from Toronto to Beijing. And during his first two years

in China he had to write letters to his family. It took two weeks for the mail to

arrive in Ottawa and another two weeks for him to get a reply (回信). “Now, everything has changed. I could talk with my parents on mobile phone and it costs

only 4 yuan a minute. Of course we can also talk free on the Internet,” he said.

“We couldn’t see many foreigners in China then. But nowadays there are more

and more foreigners in China. Many of them speak good Chinese. This is only natural,

because as China opens more and develops more, China becomes stronger, more and more foreigners want to learn more about China,” he also said. Why are there so many changes? Dashan’s answer is that China is opening more and the government is trying

hard to make the country stronger.
