[Task 1]

Bar chart:About average number of pupils in primary and lower secondary schools in six countries in 2006 (in comparison to the average figures in the world).

【Task 2】

Today, food travels thousands of miles from the farm to the consumer. Why is this? Is it a positive or a negative development?

A recent survey conducted by a group of top economists reveals that in many countries the proportion of populations involved in food production is decreasing considerably and an accordingly higher percentage of food is supplied by farms or factories located thousands of miles away. This trend is not restricted to developing nations where most food used to be supplied by individual families, and I think modern lifestyles are largely responsible for this.

Modern society is based on greediness and selfishness, so it is natural that profiteering becomes the basis of businesses. Under such scenario, it is not surprising that owners of farms make every effort to enlarge their farms while at the same time reducing the number of farm workers, perusing more profits. This has been made possible by the social development and the introduction of scientific farming methods. As a result, more and more foods are produced and supplied by the limited number of farms and consumers have no choice but to buy almost all food products traveling thousands of miles from farms.

Many people are worried about this trend, claiming that this is of negative impact, especially when it comes to the safety of food and farmland degradation because of the profiteering of businessmen and the introduction of pesticides and fertilizers in the cultivation of crops. But their assumption is refuted by the fact that our quality of life in general has been greatly improved, which is largely attributable to the change of food supply. Besides, more farmland, grassland and forests are protected because of the introduction of scientific farming methods, for example, factory farming, greatly reducing farmland degradation and water and soil erosion.

If this were not true, then it would be difficult to explain the fact that few scientists and wise politicians are trying to reverse our modern way of living by introducing simpler ways of life. Apparently, most of us are satisfied with our new sources of food, for they have clearly contributed to the ever-rising happiness index. (333 words)

【Task 2】

Many people in developing countries feel happier than before while many people in developed countries do not feel as happy as used to be.Why? What lesson can you learn from this?

4 Test 2, Writing Task 2).

Question 1

Question 2

Topic request

Happiness is considered very important in life.

Why is it difficult to define?

What factors are important in achieving happiness?

【Model answer】

Happiness is very difficult to define, because it means so many different things to different people. While some people link happiness to wealth and material success, others think it lies in emotions and loving personal relationships. Yet others think that spiritual paths, rather than either the material world or relationships with people, are the only way to true happiness.

Because people interpret happiness for themselves in so many different ways, it is difficult to give any definition that is true for everyone. However, if there are different kinds of happiness for different individuals then the first step in achieving it would be to have a degree of self-knowledge.

A person needs to know who he or she is before being able to know what it is that makes him or her happy.

Of course, factors such a s loving relationships, good health, the skills to earn a living and a peaceful environment all contribute to our happiness, too. But this does not mean that people without these conditions cannot be happy.

Overall, I think an ability to keep clear perspectives in life is a more essential factor in achieving happiness. By that I mean an ability to have a clear sense of what is important in our lives (the welfare of our families, the quality of our relationships, making other people happy, ect.) and what is not (a problem at work, getting annoyed about trivial things, etc.).

Like self-awareness, this is also very difficult to achieve, but I think these are the two factors that may be the most important for achieving happiness.

【Model answer】

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however, think that change is always a good thing. Recently, there has arisen a heated debate over the relative importance of job satisfaction and job security, with some people claiming that job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing because most people spend a major part of their adult life at work while others contending that a permanent job contributes to job security.

Those who believe they can achieve some security by doing the same, familiar jobs are living in denial. Even when people believe they are resisting change themselves, they cannot stop the world around them from changing. Sooner or later they will find that the familiar jobs no longer exist, or that the ‘safe’ patterns of behavior are no longer appropriate. This is because the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectation over the last half century. This has been driven by technology and scientific breakthroughs that are changing the whole way we view the world on an almost daily basis. This means that change, including that in the job market, is not always a personal option, but an inescapable fact of life, and we need to constantly adapt to keep pace with it.

By contrast, many employees change jobs frequently to get greater degree of job satisfaction, but they fail to realize that job hopping does not promise them with more job satisfaction. Firstly, when a person does not feel that they are doing valued work or there is no positive feedback from superiors in the new job, he or she might be discouraged and feel that the new job is not worth doing any more. Secondly, if job hopping does not improve or develop their skills, then there will be no sense of progression and purpose that rewards a worker. Besides, frequent job hoppers, more often than not, are lack of a sense of responsibility for and loyalty to a team, which means they always find it difficult to develop a strong sense of belonging to a team or a working community, making it difficult for them to enjoy their working lives.

Thus, it is too arbitrary to say whether it is good or bad to stick to a life long job. But personally, I think it would be better for employees if they could make adjustments in their career paths according to the social and economic conditions, for this would make it easier for them to adapt to the change which is unavoidable.(434 words)

【T ASK 2】More government money should be invested in teaching science rather than other subjects for the country to develop and progress. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

To develop and to progress, it is essential for a country not to set limits to imagination on which science, philosophy and arts are built. True enough, in this age of information technology we cannot but think that today's science is tomorrow's technology. However, while the importance of teaching science cannot be overemphasized, the subjects of philosophy and arts should not be ignored due to their imaginative values.

Science education is worthwhile, although often costly, for some obvious reasons. It can be seen that most modern scientific discoveries that are of significance to our lives happen in well-to-do countries in which not only private sectors but also governments are willing to invest heavily on research in many scientific disciplines. No doubt, scientists as researches need money to live and require that kind of environment which is vital to stimulating imagination. Curiously, every great advance in science seems to have come from a new audacity of imagination characteristic of great philosophers and artists. In plain words, imagination is the soul of human development and progress, as if it were shaking hands with artists, philosophers and scientists alike. Based on this presumption, therefore, it would be very unwise for any government not to spend money on teaching other forms of liberal arts along with science.

It is interesting to realize that study ing philosophy and arts can lead to such imaginative power as to interpret facts, and that the vital part about science is not so much to obtain new facts but to discover new ways of thinking about them. In a certain sense, science is in debt with imagination on the one hand, and on the other it is friendly to philosophy and arts which in turn empower imagination. As examples, stories have been told about Albert Einstein and Charles Darin, among other great men of science in history. Einstein thought, wrote and played the violin. Darwin was deeply interested in Shakespeare, Milton, Shelley. This concept may be an indication that government money should be spent on teaching science which organizes knowledge as well as on philosophy and arts which organize life, all with imagination.

Accordingly, education at its best is associated with cultivating imaginative values that are indispensable to ultimate development and progress of any civilization. Science is of course the star of the modern world and needs investment to keep it shining. Nevertheless, it should also be understood by all, particularly by the government, that science begins as philosophy and ends as art.

T ask 2:

Anyone can post information on the Internet. Some people say most of what we read on the Internet is inaccurate. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It seems quite interesting that the Internet is ubiquitous among the general public?s daily work and life, symbolizing the advent of the Internet era. The internet empowers us to seek the very information we need. However, due to the fact that posting news and information is totally available to everyone, some claim that the message we acquire may prove less precise. This essay is to discuss this topic in a more balanced way with exemplifications.

The most pressing problem is that some individuals take advantage of the Internet to commit fraud. An abundance of information on the Internet, amazingly, is not severely regulated. It is apparent that anyone with a certain amount of money and minimal skills with computer – based knowledge is capable of posting an article immediately. One impressive case in point is that one famous milk company hired a group of staff to make up false comments on his rivals‘ commodities such as the inferior quality of products and the poor customer service via the Internet, but intensify great efforts to promote the quality of their products in the name of the real customers. As a consequence, a countless number of clients are cheated and fall victims to these false customers‘ feedback.

However, the advocating voice can also be heard about such a free posting mode. Although Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, for instance, it has a large group of active and professional editors who remove erroneous information. It is true that Wikipedia serve vast quantities of information concerning almost all fields, rendering prompt helps to the researchers.

Undoubtedly, some postings on the Internet are of immense importance to us, especially ones about the advice for the computers. We tend to be encountered with quite a few intractable problems such as how to update and edit some documentaries or files, and the postings related to these headaches will be the very suggestion we can turn to.

In summary, to ensure the accuracy and credibility of the information on the Internet, the government may attempt to establish increasingly stringent censorship like demanding the supply of the posters‘ real and overall personal information, which is a fairly practical way.

The qualities a person needs to become successful in today's world cannot be learned at a university or any similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

(These social qualities can be cultivated more efficiently, and quite possibly more effectively, in competitive workplaces than in university classrooms and similar educational settings.)。

(In the era of knowledge economy),越来越多的成功企业家并非大学甚至高中毕业生(An increasing number of successful entrepreneurs do not hold a university degree or even a high school diploma.) (It is not because academic knowledge is worthless or is depreciating.),而是说明大学教学应该更好地满足未来工作对学生们的更加全面的素质要求(endeavor to meet the future demand for better-rounded professionals),也说明大学必须更加尊重学生们的真实学习兴趣。 The minute I dropped out,I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

因此,我们应该做的不是一味贬低大学教育在未来成功中的作用(downplay the possible role of university education in future career success),而是建立或者改造出对学生未来成功更加有益的大学。

There are many extinct animal species in the world nowadays. Some people say we should protect these animals from dying out, while others say we should concentrate more on problems of human beings. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

With the extinction of many precious animal species, a great amount of time and money has been spent on the protection of wild animals. However, some people hold the contention that this should be spent on the human race.

These people might argue that it is pointless to waste so much time and money on animals when we have not solved the countless problems of our own. Millions of people in Africa dying from hunger, many people still suffering from fatal diseases, and the ever-worsening air pollution are just few of the problems we are faced with. In fact, most countries in this world are in urgent need of money to boost the quality of life and to reduce sufferings of their citizens. Therefore, they believe, it is by no means justified to spend time and the limited financial resource in animal protection, regardless of species.

However, humans should, of course, be responsible for the extinction of endangered animals for the sake of both animals and human beings. This is especially true when we realize that we have done so many terrible things to the ecosystem: destroying millions of acres of tropical forests, leaving the animals with no place to live; contaminating water in rivers, lakes, and oceans, threatening most of the animals there; killing animals to satisfy our appetite or to make profits out of them, for instance, their furs. Consequently, what we have done has brought great disasters to not only animals but humans as well: the dying-out of one animal species means one unrecoverable missing link in the ecological balance, which will then have permanent damaging impacts on the human race. Ecologists say that the day when only people exist on earth is the end of the world.

To conclude, without suggesting that the problems human beings are faced with should be ignored, I think it is by no means pointless to spend time and money protecting animals on the edge of extinction, for humans and animals are in the same chain of life and death. (340 words)
